THE BRITISH STALLIONS STUDS EBF NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) (A HAMILTON PARK 2-Y-O SERIES QUALIFIER)

RACE DESCRIPTION

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 85.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (20-25): T Easterby (23 wins from 213 runners, 11%) runs BLEEP TEST

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (8 wins from 62 runners, 13%) runs ROGUE SUPREMACY Longest Traveller: ROGUE SUPREMACY trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.

BETTING FORECAST: 13-8 Rogue Supremacy (GB), 9-4 Soca Star (IRE), 4-1 Ice Cold Alex (GB), 6-1 Bleep Test (GB)

RACE SUMMARY: This represents a significant drop in class for ROGUE SUPREMACY, who has contested listed races at Royal Ascot and Sandown subsequent to a promising debut success early last month. He has been handed a reasonable mark for this nursery debut and earns the vote. Similarly, Ice Cold Alex made a winning start to his career before being pitched into a couple of well-contested novice events and he is feared most ahead of Soca Star.

(CLASS 6)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

(FOR HORSES IN BANDS B, C AND D) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is a Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile and 68 yards. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old

THE WATSON MEMORIAL CUP

The winning owner of today’s feature race, the Almada Mile Handicap Stakes, will be presented with the Watson Memorial Cup

Sir Julian Somerled Watson, 7th Baronet of Earnock, was a shareholder, loyal supporter and regular visitor to Hamilton Park.

Following the passing of Sir Julian in May 2016,theWatsonBaronetcybecameextinct and since then the team at Hamilton Park have worked closely with the Watson Estate to ensure a lasting legacy.

Since it was founded in c1895, the Watson Baronetcy of Earnock contributed considerably to the local Hamilton community

Sir John Watson, 1st Baronet of Earnock, owned several collieries in the area includingthe Neilsland and EarnockCollieryonthe Neilsland Estate which covered over 2,000 acres. The Watson family also gifted the elaborate Watson Fountain to the town of Hamilton, which still stands proudly at the triangular merging of Cadzow street and Muir street

World-renowned silversmiths, Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh, have created ‘The Watson Memorial Cup’ which will paytributetotheWatson Baronetcy and Sir Julian’s love of racing through special hand-engravings. In 2012, the racecourse also trusted the leading silversmiths with the creation of the Lanark Silver Bell trophy inspired by the original ancient relic.

Ashley Moon, Racecourse Managing Director at Hamilton Park, said “The £30,000 Almada Mile Handicap is rapidly becoming one of the most popular races in the Hamilton Park calendar and it’s great to see such a strong field for today’s race To honour the memory of the Watson Baronetcy, and their contribution to the local area, is something we are very proud to do and associating the family with this particularrace is ofgreat significance forthe racecourse and the people ofHamilton.

HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and 68 yards handicap race for three-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (20-25): R Fahey (34 wins from 181 runners, 19%) runs SAILTHISSHIPALONE

RACE SUMMARY: Recent C&D winner SALLAAL still holds an entry in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur next month and this well-bred son of Frankel may have too much for his rivals on handicap debut. Theoryofeverything looked better than ever when winning at Ayr earlier this month and is feared most under a penalty Of the rest, Rhythm Master may well add another placed effort to this season’s CV while Sailthisshipalone won’t be inconvenienced by any rainfall having gone close in a handicap on soft ground last time out.

THE WELLMAN CARS PRIVATE HIRE HAMILTON HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and 68 yard handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.
