WELCOME
Good afternoon and welcome to Hamilton Park for our Aspire Cleaning & Facilities Raceday featuring the Almada Mile Handicap Stakes. We have a great afternoon of racing ahead of us and our thanks go to all of today’s sponsors – Aspire Cleaning Company, Racing TV and our very own Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park. I hope you and your guests have an enjoyable day.
This afternoon’s feature race is the Aspire Cleaning Company Almada Mile Handicap Stakes at 3.17pm; one of the most valuable races in our racing calendar The beautiful Watson Memorial Cup is presented annually to the winner of this race – a tribute combining local significance of both the race and the Watson family Sir Julian Somerled Watson, 7th Baronet of Earnock, was a shareholder, loyal supporter and regular visitor to Hamilton Park who sadly passed away in May 2016.
Since then the Watson Baronetcy has become extinct. The Watson Baronetcy of Earnock contributed considerably to the local community and Sir John Watson, 1st Baronet of Earnock, owned several collieries in the area including the Neilsland and Earnock colliery on the Neilsland Estate which covered over 2,000 acres. The Watson family also gifted the elaborate Watson Fountain to the town of Hamilton, which still stands proudly at the triangular merging of Cadzow Street and Muir Street.
Six horses have been declared for this year’s race, with the top-weights being shared by course and distance winners Eilean Dubh for Karl Burke and Fantastic Fox for Roger Varian. However, Charlie Johnston will no doubt be expecting a strong run from Austrian Theory who will be looking to win this race for a second time under the in-form Joe Fanning, having taken the honours in last year’s race by half a length.
Looking ahead we have our Jordan Electrics Family Racenight on Saturday 15 July, where we have a host of free kid’s entertainment and live music after racing from Callum Beattie, before our double meeting on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 July, which is always a great meeting and features some fantastic racing with the EBF Glasgow Listed Stakes and the G4 Claims Ltd Scottish Stewards Cup If you haven’t already bought your tickets, then do take advantage of some great discounts by buying in advance on our website www.hamilton-park.co.uk, and remember that under 18s get free admission to all of our fixtures when attending with an adult.
Have a great day today and I hope you back a winner or two!
Kind regards,
ASHLEY MOON, RACECOURSE MANAGING DIRECTOR

(CLASS 5)
BANDS C AND D) (EBF RESTRICTED RACE QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE SUMMARY: CALYPSO seemed unsuited by the emphasis on speed but ultimately shaped well when running on for third at Haydock (7f) 3 weeks ago and, remaining with potential, not least back at 1m, he could be the answer. Hale End impressed when running out a ready winner of a C&D handicap 13 days ago and a 10lb rise shouldn’t prevent him going well again. Indiana Be completes the shortlist.

THE WATSON MEMORIAL CUP
The winning owner of today’s feature race, the Almada Mile Handicap Stakes, will be presented with the Watson Memorial Cup
Sir Julian Somerled Watson, 7th Baronet of Earnock, was a shareholder, loyal supporter and regular visitor to Hamilton Park.
Following the passing of Sir Julian in May 2016,theWatsonBaronetcybecameextinct and since then the team at Hamilton Park have worked closely with the Watson Estate to ensure a lasting legacy.
Since it was founded in c1895, the Watson Baronetcy of Earnock contributed considerably to the local Hamilton community Sir John Watson, 1st Baronet of Earnock, owned several collieries in the area includingthe Neilsland and EarnockCollieryonthe Neilsland Estate which covered over 2,000 acres. The Watson family also gifted the elaborate Watson Fountain to the town of Hamilton, which still stands proudly at the triangular merging of Cadzow street and Muir street
World-renowned silversmiths, Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh, have created ‘The Watson Memorial Cup’ which will paytributetotheWatson Baronetcy and Sir Julian’s love of racing through special hand-engravings. In 2012, the racecourse also trusted the leading silversmiths with the creation of the Lanark Silver Bell trophy inspired by the original ancient relic.
Ashley Moon, Racecourse Managing Director at Hamilton Park, said “The £30,000 Almada Mile Handicap is rapidly becoming one of the most popular races in the Hamilton Park calendar and it’s great to see such a strong field for today’s race To honour the memory of the Watson Baronetcy, and their contribution to the local area, is something we are very proud to do and associating the family with this particularrace is ofgreat significance forthe racecourse and the people ofHamilton.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap
In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

RACE SUMMARY: Interesting fare despite the small field with the narrow vote in favour of EILEAN DUBH. He produced easily his most encouraging run of the campaign when third behind re-opposing Maysong at Sandown 17 days ago and meeting that rival on these more favourable terms, he looks to hold sound claims. Fantastic Fox and Austrian Theory, fellow course winners, can also feature.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55.
