WELCOME
Good afternoon and welcome to Hamilton Park for our Bothwell Castle Raceday, as we share the stage with Royal Ascot today.
We have a fantastic afternoon of racing ahead of us, and our thanks go to all of today’s sponsors – The European Breeders Fund, Scottish Racing, Racing TV and our very own on-site Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park Hotel. I hope you and your guests have a most enjoyable day’s racing with us.
We have a great seven race card this evening starting with the first Amateur Riders race of the season at Hamilton Park. With a near full field of 13 declared, some of the UK’s leading Amateur Riders are lined up to ride in this race and it should prove an intriguing contest
Today’s fourth race has been titled to highlight Scottish Racing’s support of Racing with Pride which is British horseracing’s official network for the LGBT+ community and allies, which was launched in 2020 as a result of academic work demonstrating the need for more support in this area. The group work to ensure racing is a sport where everyone can be their true selves without fear of discrimination. They have developed educational resources, delivered webinars, created a bespoke set of racing silks, and partnered with British racing’s only out gay jockey, Jack Duern. They have also organised several social events for members to meet-up both online and in person to enjoy their shared passion, including through working alongside Great British Racing on the Racing is Everyone’s Sport campaign. You can find more details on Racing with Pride later in this racecard.
On the track today we can expect some close contests, with competitive fields across the card. The racingtv.com Classified Stakes at 5.15pm sees four-time course winner Retirement Beckons return to Hamilton Park after getting back to winning form at Ayr last week, however he’ll be up against Iain Jardine’s Our Dickie, who was a convincing winner when the two went head-to-head here back in May
With heightened interest in our sport this week due to Royal Ascot, we’ll be showing all the away racing on the screens around the grounds between our own races, so if you fancy a flutter on the action in Berkshire then just head along to any Tote window, the William Hill Betting Shop or the Betting Ring where you’ll be able to place your bets.
Next week will see the return of our ever-popular Saints & Sinners Racenight, sponsored by Indigo Unified Comms, where we all come together to enjoy an evening of racing and entertainment from Go Radio whilst raising much needed funds for small, Scottish-based charities. A portion of every ticket sold is donated to the Saints & Sinners Club of Scotland, who then distribute the funds to worthwhile causes, so simply by buying a ticket to attend you are supporting those in need. Advance purchase tickets are available from only £22.50 at www.hamilton-park.co.uk and as always Under 18s get free admission, so I do hope to see some of you again next week.
Have an excellent afternoon and I hope you back some winners today, whether it be here or at Royal Ascot.
Kind regards,
ASHLEY MOON, RACECOURSE MANAGING DIRECTOR

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THE HAMILTON PARK EBF MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 4) (A HAMILTON PARK 2YO SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and half a furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

BOTHWELL CASTLE FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and half a furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

CLASSIFIED STAKES (CLASS 6)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a seven furlongs classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to a lower rated rival.
