WELCOME
A very warm welcome to you all this evening for our Palmaris Racenight. Evening racing is one of the key features of our fixture list here at Hamilton Park having been the first racecourse in the country to stage such a fixture back in 1947. This is always one of my favourites with the combination of great racing and off-track entertainment providing a fantastic occasion for us all to enjoy.
A huge thank you goes to all of our sponsors this evening; Palmaris Services Ltd, Patersons of Greenoakhill, PDM Buildbase, EBF and Molton Brown, as well as the Gilliland family who join us tonight to mark the 10th anniversary of the late Robert Gilliland.
I’d also like to welcome the Lighthouse Club construction industry charity who are with us in the Club Lawn marquee tonight and are raising monies to provide emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families. I do hope you and all your guests have a wonderful evening.
Tonight’s racing has attracted competitive fields across the card with our feature race, the £30,000 Palmaris Services Braveheart Handicap Stakes getting underway at 7.55pm. Top of the weights is course specialist Wickywickywheels for Jim Goldie who won five times here in 2022. Four of those wins have come on good ground or better and so conditions should suit him well this evening.
Keith Dalgleish is double-handed in the race with course and distance winner Good Show as well as Heights of Abraham, who will be looking to go one better than his second place finish in this race last year for Owners Two Goldfish & A Balloon.
The Robert Gilliland 10th Anniversary Memorial Celebrations Handicap Stakes at 9pm looks set to be an excellent contest with some familiar Hamilton Park winners going head-to-head. Retirement Beckons is a four-time winner here for Owner Ritchie Winning who I’m sure will be hoping for a stronger run than his last outing on 7 May, whilst Havana Party and Chinese Spirit, both two-time Hamilton Park winners, will also be looking for a return to form. Away from the track action, the team here at Hamilton is proud to be supporting #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek which is a national campaign run by the Mental Health Foundation, with the focus this year on anxiety Racing Welfare leads racing’s engagement with this important awareness campaign, normalising conversations about mental health and encouraging those in the sport to take action for their mental health, or for the mental health of others around them. Hamilton Park is committed to providing support for the wellbeing of our team through the provision of mental health first aiders alongside an overall culture that encourages our people to share their experiences and talk when they are struggling. The message that it’s okay not to be okay is more relevant than ever and so details on how to reach out to Racing Welfare for support are included within this evenings racecard. After racing this evening I hope many of you will stay on to enjoy a high energy set of 90s dance classics mixed by legendary dance DJ Dave Pearce, who will be taking us through until bars close at 10.45pm. Have a great night and I hope you back a winner or two!
Kind regards,
ASHLEY MOON, RACECOURSE MANAGING DIRECTOR

RACING JARGON BUSTER

ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next
ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience

Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail
DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)
DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before
EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5
FILLY female horse up to four years old

FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)
GELDING castrated horse

RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THE MOLTON BROWN AT HAMILTON PARK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for threeyear-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (17-22): J Goldie (35 wins from 283 runners, 12%) runs EPONA PAS

HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like most handicaps on the Flat, this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (17-22): K Dalgleish (49 wins from 399 runners, 12%) runs GOOD SHOW & HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): J Goldie (7 wins from 67 runners, 10%) runs FAYLAQ and WICKYWICKYWHEELS
Fancy That: J Goldie won this race in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
The stable runs FAYLAQ and WICKYWICKYWHEELS today
Longest Travellers: WANDERING ROCKS trained by J Fanshawe, CUMULONIMBUS trained by C Fellowes - both Newmarket, 360 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 7-2 Two Brothers (GB), 9-2 Good Show (GB), 6-1 Cumulonimbus (IRE), 13-2 Faylaq (GB), 10-1 Wandering Rocks (GB), 14-1 Wickywickywheels (IRE), Onesmoothoperator (USA), La Pulga (IRE), Heights of Abraham (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: The low-mileage GOOD SHOW can build on his sound third here earlier in the month and notch a second C&D success. Newmarket raider Wandering Rocks should strip fitter for his AW reappearance and is feared most ahead of last week’s Chester runner-up Two Brothers.
