WELCOME

A warm welcome to you all this afternoon and thank you for joining us for our Sky Bet Sunday Series Raceday.

With over £200,000 in prize money up for grabs across seven races today, I’m pleased that we’ve been rewarded with some excellent field sizes across much of the card. The Sky Bet Sunday Series is a fantastic initiative and my thanks go to Sky Bet as well as the British Horse Racing Authority, Racecourse Media Group and ITV Racing, all of whom have played a key part in the development of this series which is now in it’s third year Particular thanks go to all of the Owners, Trainers, Jockey’s and Stable Staff for their support of today’s fixture, it’s great for us to be welcoming Horsemen from across the UK and Ireland to Hamilton Park as well as the cameras from ITV Racing who will be broadcasting all of today’s action on ITV4.

There are some fantastic bonuses and prizes linked to the Sky Bet Sunday Series which should provide some excellent competition over the six fixtures in the series. These include;

• £10,000 Jockey Cup - At each Fixture of the 2023 Sky Bet Sunday Series, the jockey to accrue the most points across the 7 races of the Fixture will win £10,000.

• £100,000 to the Owner of the first horse to win 3 races in the Series

• Stable Staff prizes to the three leading stables with guaranteed prizes of £10,000 (1st), £3,000 (2nd) and £2,000 (3rd), based on points from winners, seconds, thirds. Enhancing Best Turned Out awards of £250 per race (split for 1st, 2nd and 3rd) for all races in the Series, to ensure Stable Staff are rewarded for their work preparing their horses for each race.

The competition for the new Jockey Cup is already proving to be a popular target, with Connor Beasley scooping the first £10,000 prize at Musselburgh last month. Connor has three rides today and will be hoping for a strong showing but I’m sure the twenty-eight other jockeys competing today will have their eye on the prize. 17-year-old star apprentice Billy Loughnane also joins us to make his Hamilton Park debut and I wish him luck as he takes on the famous Hamilton Park hill for the first time

With so many runners this afternoon we’re sure to see some extremely competitive racing throughout the card. The Sky Bet Sunday Series Fillies’ Handicap at 4.45pm has a full field of fifteen set to go to post, with the Ollie Pears-trained Crown Prince looking to repeat last year’s victory which saw her win by a short head over the same distance Jim Goldie has targeted this race with three runners including A La Francaise and Graces Quest for owners Summerstorm Bloodstock who have a good strike-rate here and could well challenge for the win.

The 6.15pm Sky Bet Sunday Series Stayers Handicap is over our longest trip of 1 mile, 5 furlongs, with our unique starting position beyond the winning post. This looks another excellent contest with course and distance winners Captain Haddock and Haizoom set to go head-to-head once again. Haizoom took last years contest by just a neck from Captain Haddock, but with today’s weights and a strong field it’s sure to be another close race

We’re delighted to be welcoming the team of Oli Bell, Luke Harvey, Leonna Mayor and Timeform’s Dan Barber who will be presenting ITV Racing’s live coverage, whilst Love Island star Frankie Foster will be sharing stories from around the course on Racing TV’s Instagram page, so do use #Raceday if you are using social media this afternoon.

Once the on-track action has finished, DJ Stevie Lennon will be hosting our after-party in the Parade Ring Marquee along with the fantastic Gav On Sax. It should be a great way to end the evening and the bar is open until 8.45pm, so do stay on after the last race to enjoy the party Have a wonderful raceday and I hope you back a few winners!

Kind regards,

RACING JARGON BUSTER

Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.

ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience

ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface

Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail

DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)

DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before

EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5

FILLY female horse up to four years old

FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)

GELDING castrated horse

THE RACE TO A CURE FOR MND 3YO SPRINT HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 0 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Third Race

THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 0 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (17-22):

K Dalgleish (49 wins from 394 runners, 12%) runs IATO’S ANGEL

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (8 wins from 52 runners, 15%) runs SCOTCH MISTRESS and ZARABANDA

Longest Traveller: CELTIC EMPRESS trained by H Main, Wantage, 363 miles.

BETTING FORECAST: 11-2 Iato’s Angel (IRE), 17-2 Nigwa (GB), 9-1 My Little Queens (IRE), 12-1 Casilli (GB), Zarabanda (IRE), Crown Princess (IRE), 14-1 Graces Quest (GB), 16-1 Balalaika (IRE), Centre Court (FR), 18-1 Scotch Mistress (GB), 20-1 Sophiesticate (IRE), 22-1 Invisible Friend (IRE), 25-1 Vindobala (IRE), 33-1 Celtic Empress (GB), A La Francaise (GB)

RACE SUMMARY: A highly competitive handicap but it’s still hard to ignore the claims of IATO’S ANGEL, who has taken her form up a level this spring and looks weighted to go in again. Unexposed pair Nigwa and Zarabanda appeal as the types to take a sizeable step forward and can chase home Keith Dalgleish’s improver in that order. Balalaika and Invisible Friend complete the shortlist.

5.15pm

THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES MILE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (17-22): K Dalgleish (49 wins from 394 runners, 12%) runs WHAT’S THE STORY

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (8 wins from 52 runners, 15%) runs PISANELLO and YOUNG FIRE

Weightwatcher: POET’S DAWN won off a handicap mark of 83, his rating is now down 10lb to 73.

THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES SPRINT HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (17-22): K Dalgleish (49 wins from 394 runners, 12%) runs EDWARD CORNELIUS and THE THIN BLUE LINE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days):

R Fahey (4 wins from 42 runners, 10%) runs MONSIEUR KODI

Weightwatcher: HUDDLE UP won off a handicap mark of 79, his rating is now down 5lb to 74.

Longest Traveller: LAHEG trained by M Botti, Newmarket, 360 miles.

BETTING FORECAST: 4-1 Spoof (GB), 13-2 Jordan Electrics (GB), 7-1 The Thin Blue Line (IRE), 8-1 Huddle Up (IRE), 9-1 Monsieur Kodi (IRE), 12-1 Rock Melody (IRE), 14-1 Object (GB),

16-1 Ramon di Loria (IRE), 18-1 Laheg (FR), 20-1 Pockley (GB), 22-1 Edward Cornelius (IRE), 25-1 Wrecked It Ralph (GB)

RACE SUMMARY: With headgear left off, JORDAN ELECTRICS gained a first success at 5f since he was a 2-y-o when justifying strong support at Ayr 10 days ago and he can follow up on only his third start for his current yard Heading the list of dangers is Spoof who arrives bidding for a hat-trick, while Huddle Up and The Thin Blue Line also merit consideration.

THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES STAYERS’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 80.

Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (17-22): K Dalgleish (49 wins from 394 runners, 12%)

runs HAIZOOM and HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): C Johnston (7 wins from 56 runners, 12%) runs FAIRMAC and WORLD WITHOUT LOVE

Weightwatcher: CAPTAIN HADDOCK won off a handicap mark of 78, his rating is now down 8lb to 70.

Longest Traveller: CAPTAIN HADDOCK trained by H Main, Wantage, 363 miles.

THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES MIDDLE DISTANCE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and three furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85.
