WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to Hamilton Park for our Almada Mile Raceday. We have an action-packed afternoon of racing ahead of us today and our thanks go to today’s sponsors – Racing TV, Racing Welfare and our very own Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park. This week is Racing Staff Week and we at Hamilton Park are proud to support this great initiative by Racing Welfare. This week is all about informing and engaging with horseracing followers and supporters about the passion, skill and dedication required to work in racing, whether that’s stable staff, groundstaff, stewarding, broadcast, catering or racecourse management – everyone plays an important role in keeping the show on the road. Our race this afternoon at 2.15pm is entitled to mark the occasion, Hamilton Park Supporting Racing Staff Week Novice Stakes, and I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone who works at Hamilton Park and contributes to making our racedays so successful. This afternoon’s feature race is the Stay at Hampton by Hilton Almada Mile Handicap Stakes at 2.45pm; one of the most valuable races in our racing calendar. The beautiful Watson Memorial Cup is presented annually to the winner of this race – a tribute combining local significance of both the race and the Watson family. Sir Julian Somerled Watson, 7th Baronet of Earnock, was a shareholder, loyal supporter and regular visitor to Hamilton Park who sadly passed away in May 2016. Since then the Watson Baronetcy has become extinct. The Watson Baronetcy of Earnock contributed considerably to the local community and Sir John Watson, 1st Baronet of Earnock, owned several collieries in the area including the Neilsland and Earnock colliery on the Neilsland Estate which covered over 2,000 acres. The Watson family also gifted the elaborate Watson Fountain to the town of Hamilton, which still stands proudly at the triangular merging of Cadzow Street and Muir Street. Ten horses have been declared for this year’s race, with the top-rated being course and distance winner Redarna for Penrith-based trainer Dianne Sayer. However, there is stiff competition from Newmarket in the form of Godolphin’s Ghaly, trained by Saeed Bin Suroor, whilst George Boughey will be hoping that Sip and Smile can help him continue his 100% strike rate here at Hamilton Park, with leading jockey William Buick once again piloting his runners. Looking ahead to July we have our Jordan Electrics Family Racenight on Saturday 9 July, where we have a host of free kid’s entertainment and live music after racing, before our double meeting on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 July, which is always a great meeting and features some fantastic racing with the Glasgow Listed Stakes and the Scottish Stewards Cup. If you haven’t already bought your tickets, then do take advantage of some great discounts by buying in advance on our website www.hamilton-park.co.uk, and remember that under 18s get free admission to all of our fixtures when attending with an adult. Have a great day today and I hope you back some winners! Kind regards ASHLEY MOON, RACECOURSE MANAGING DIRECTOR

THE RACINGTV.COM MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 4) (A HAMILTON PARK 2YO SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

THE BOOK OUR ON-SITE HOTEL FERNIEGAIR HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 56 to 75. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THE HAMILTON PARK SUPPORTING RACING STAFF WEEK NOVICE STAKES (CLASS 5) (GBB RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is a Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the threeyear-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

RACE STATISTICS

THE WATSON MEMORIAL CUP

The winning owner of today’s feature race, the Almada Mile Handicap Stakes, will be presented with the Watson Memorial Cup. Sir Julian Somerled Watson, 7th Baronet of Earnock, was a shareholder, loyal supporter and regular visitor to Hamilton Park. Following the passing of Sir Julian in May 2016, the Watson Baronetcy became extinct and since then the team at Hamilton Park have worked closely with the Watson Estate to ensure a lasting legacy. Since it was founded in c1895, the Watson Baronetcy of Earnock contributed considerably to the local Hamilton community. Sir John Watson, 1st Baronet of Earnock, owned several collieries in the area including the Neilsland and Earnock Colliery on the Neilsland Estate which covered over 2,000 acres. The Watson family also gifted the elaborate Watson Fountain to the town of Hamilton, which still stands proudly at the triangular merging of Cadzow street and Muir street. World-renowned silversmiths, Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh, have created ‘The Watson Memorial Cup’ which will pay tribute to the Watson Baronetcy and Sir Julian’s love of racing through special hand-engravings. In 2012, the racecourse also trusted the leading silversmiths with the creation of the Lanark Silver Bell trophy inspired by the original ancient relic. Ashley Moon, Racecourse Managing Director at Hamilton Park, said “The £30,000 Almada Mile Handicap is rapidly becoming one of the most popular races in the Hamilton Park calendar and it’s great to see such a strong field for today’s race. To honour the memory of the Watson Baronetcy, and their contribution to the local area, is something we are very proud to do and associating the family with this particular race is of great significance for the racecourse and the people of Hamilton.

RACE STATISTICS

HAMILTON PARK RACECOURSE EXECUTIVE will present a memento to the winning Owner, Trainer and Jockey. The Winning Owner will be presented with the Watson Memorial Cup which will be retained by the racecourse. In addition, they will present a cash prize to the person in charge of the horse judged to be the best turned out. Owners Prize Money. Winner £12189; Second £6096; Third £3048; Fourth £1524; Fifth £762; Sixth £381. (Penalty Value £15462)

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. Leading course trainer (17-22): K Dalgleish (55 wins from 432 runners, 13%) runs BRINGITONBORIS and SUMMA PETO Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): C & M Johnston (12 wins from 88 runners, 14%) runs AUSTRIAN THEORY Longest Traveller: GHALY trained by S bin Suroor & SIP AND SMILE trained by G Boughey, both Newmarket, 360 miles.

Recent Haydock scorer Fame And Acclaim can give another good account, while Ghaly requires a close look in the betting returning from a long absence. 1-2-3: 1.SIP AND SMILE (IRE) 2.FAME AND ACCLAIM (IRE) 3.GHALY STEWARDS NOTE: REDARNA: Following its run on 12/5/2022 it was reported that the horse hung left handed. ONE MILE about FOUR FURLONGS (12f abt 15yds) (2400m)

Fifth Race

3.15pm THE HAMILTON-PARK.CO.UK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Owners Prize Money. Winner £4459; Second £2229; Third £1115; Fourth £557; Fifth £240; Sixth £240. (Penalty Value £5642.99)

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80.

RACE STATISTICS

THE HAMILTON PARK RACECOURSE EXECUTIVE will present a memento to the winning owner. In addition, they will present a cash prize to the person in charge of the horse judged to be the best turned out. Owners Prize Money. Winner £2859; Second £1429; Third £715; Fourth £357; Fifth £240; Sixth £240. (Penalty Value £3618)

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (30 wins from 197 runners, 15%) runs DAN DE LIGHT Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (9 wins from 103 runners, 9%) runs DAN DE LIGHT Longest Traveller: SHESADABBER trained by M Mullineaux, Tarporley, 225 miles.

Refuge won over C&D 3 weeks ago and must go well under William Buick, with Shesadabber another to consider. 1-2-3: 1.MOKAMAN 2.REFUGE 3.SHESADABBER STEWARDS NOTE: DAN DE LIGHT: Following its run on 11/6/2022 it was reported that the horse was slowly away.
