WELCOME Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to our Jubilee Bank Holiday Raceday, as the celebrations to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee get underway across the country. The Queen’s love of horse racing is well documented, she first rode a horse at the age of three and they have been a constant in her life ever since. Her love of racing has never diminished, with her devotion as a passionate fan, owner, breeder and ambassador unwavering. The team at Hamilton Park send their thanks and very best wishes to Her Majesty The Queen, in this her 70th year as Monarch and supporter of British Racing. We’re bringing a royal flavour to the resort today with our themed flower wall featuring our very own throne and royal props! Make sure you capture your pictures and share them on our social media channels using #hamiltonpark. For young racegoers we have a jubilee-themed colouring competition with free colouring packs available from the information kiosk, with a family pass to our Maggie’s Goes Racing September Weekend Family Raceday up for grabs for the winning entry. We have a great afternoon of racing ahead of us today, with our feature race, The Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Clyde Handicap Stakes worth £30,000 at 2.36pm set to be an intriguing contest over six furlongs. Amongst the field are four course and distance winners including Air Raid for Jedd O’Keeffe, who secured a hat-trick of wins here in 2019 including the Scottish Stewards Cup. Charlie & Mark Johnston have the aptly named I’m A Gambler looking to feature, having won by a short-head over this distance at our Sky Bet Sunday Series on 8 May, whilst Richard Fahey will be hoping Strike Red can recapture the form that saw him win here last July. Jim Goldie is enjoying an incredible run of form having secured a treble at Musselburgh, Ayr and here at Hamilton Park over the last few weeks. He has Call Me Ginger in the feature race amongst a string of five runners today, with Paul Mulrennan taking four rides – could we see another treble today? The Award-Winning Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park Handicap Stakes at 4.55pm has a small but competitive field of five, with Newmarket-based trainer Sean Woods saddling Savvy Knight at the top of the weights. As the race title suggests, the hotel hit the headlines this week as they scooped the award for Scotland’s Best Low Cost Hotel at the Prestige Hotel Awards. Congratulations to General Manager Alex Cameron and his team on this fantastic achievement and richly deserved recognition. If you’ve not had the opportunity to visit the hotel, either on a raceday or at any other time, then I would highly recommend you pop in for a coffee or a bite to eat, or of course an overnight stay. STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. RACING JARGON BUSTER Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills. ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track DAM mother of a horse DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest.
