WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to our Cadzow Castle Raceday, our first midweek fixture of the season. We have an exciting afternoon of racing ahead of us, with prize money totalling £61,500 on offer across the card, and all races being run at no less than £2,000 above BHA minimum values. This is all part of our increased commitment to prize money, Owners, and the quality of the racing we stage here at Hamilton Park, with a record prize fund of over £1.6M planned for the season with investment across all classes of race. In today’s feature race, at 2.50pm, the Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap Stakes for £13,000, we have eight declared runners which include two-time course and distance winners Global Humor for Jim Goldie and Rose Bandit for Ian Jardine. Newmarket based trainer George Boughey runs Inver Park at the top of the weights with leading Jockey William Buick taking the ride. Buick is the current favourite to take the Flat Jockeys’ Championship this year having been runner-up in the last two seasons, and so he’ll be hoping to notch up a couple of wins from his six rides with us today. In the 3.20pm Weatherbys Private Bank Handicap, Richard Fahey will be hoping that The New Marwan, ridden by Paul Hanagan, will return to the form that saw him win here in 2019, whilst former Hamilton Park Champion Owner Jimmy Long will be looking to get on the board with a strong run from Wickywickywheels. Looking ahead, June is always a very busy month for us with our fixtures coming in quick succession. STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. RACING JARGON BUSTER Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills. ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track DAM mother of a horse DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap Stakes & Weatherbys Private Bank Handicap Stakes Preview Weatherbys sponsor two of today’s seven races, starting with the feature event, the Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap, a class 4 contest (0-85) over 6f, in which eight go to post. The weights are headed by Inver Park, who carries a 5lbs penalty for last week’s victory at Windsor. Despite hanging to his left, he appeared to win with a bit in hand, on what was just his third start for the George Boughey stable and the Classic-winning trainer’s only previous runner at this track was successful. The Pivotal gelding makes the long journey north from Boughey’s Saffron House Stables in Newmarket. Nearly A Gonna also won last Monday and carries a similar penalty. Despite missing the break, Tim Easterby’s five-year-old made virtually all and was 4 lengths clear at the line. That was his third career success and showed his versatility in terms of ground, with the going described as soft at Carlisle and him having previously won on a sounder surface. Shark Two One is another who ran well last time, when runner-up at Ripon, and the winner has won again since. He again wears blinkers and should go well from a 3lbs higher mark, although the son of Adaay hasn’t won since his two-year-old campaign. Of the remainder, Global Humor, Glorious Rio and Rose Bandit are all previous course winners, although all three are quite exposed now and won most recently over the minimum trip. Tipperary Tiger has progressed on the all-weather recently, whilst the three-year-old Devasboy drops to this trip for the first time in his career. A winner over 7f at Brighton last season, he has also been in all-weather action of late and was most recently seen finishing third at Wolverhampton, having earlier made all to win (also 7f) at Newcastle. Joe Fanning will likely want to make this a test from the front. Eight horses also line-up for the Weatherbys Private Bank Handicap, a class 5 contest (0-70) over an extended 1m3f. Again, three previous course winners take their chance, with Where’s Jeff twice a winner at the track. He tired late on over course-and-distance last time, whilst The New Marwan and Sameem – who finished second and third here earlier in the month – are the other pair. That race was over a furlong further than today’s contest and the longer trip appeared to suit the former, who stayed on well from off the pace. He is a lot less exposed than Sameem, so might well be able to confirm the form. Having finished runner-up on five of her six career starts, Arrange is proving a little frustrating to follow, although coming back in trip might help, whilst Clansman also hit the frame last time, when third at Ayr. A 50-1 winner at Redcar last month – on what was his first start for the Liam Bailey stable – he is up in grade slightly, although he did have Wickywickywheels 3¾-lengths back in fourth on that occasion. Both would seemingly need improve to take this event. Finally, Ebony Maw, who hasn’t shown a great deal in two starts for Ewan Whillans and bottom-weight Crystal Guard complete the field of eight. This is a ﬁve furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. This handicap is for apprentice jokcyes only and the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their oﬃcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
