WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to Hamilton Park’s opening day of the season, the Les Hoey MBE Dreamaker Foundation Family Raceday. It’s great to finally be able to welcome racegoers to our opening day for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic, and excitement has been building as we have prepared for the 2022 season.

This summer will see the richest race programme ever at Hamilton Park with our total prize money fund set to top £1,600,000 for the very first time, alongside our richest raceday worth £200,000 next Sunday 8 May. This year will also see our richest single race ever, with the Lanark Silver Bell being upgraded to a Heritage Handicap worth £100,000. We are committed to delivering an aspirational race programme which strikes an effective balance across all grades of race. With that in mind, all races in this season’s programme are set to be run for at least £2,000 above BHA minimum values, with our feature Listed, Class 2, 3 and 4 races also offering significant prize funds.

Away from the race programme the team have put in an incredible amount of work in preparation for the season. Head Groundsman Mark Bemrose and his team have been carrying out improvement works on the track to ensure we have the best racing surface possible, whilst around the grounds you will see more flowers than ever alongside our famous striped lawns. Elsewhere around the resort we have made improvements to the Annual Members Bar as well as introducing our new Paddock Café, which overlooks the Winners Enclosure and offers a range of light bites and tasty treats as well as freshly made Barrel & Stone pizzas. We have also completed the installation of our new brand signage across the grounds as well as giving the grandstand and buildings a new coat of paint to ensure the racecourse looks pristine. My thanks go to the entire Hamilton Park team for their efforts in preparing for this season.

Today’s second race, the £30,000 Patersons of Greenoakhill Buttonhook Handicap, will be shown live on ITV & STV Racing and shows off a key feature of our track. The 1m 5f start is just behind the Winning Line and makes for a great spectacle as the horses break from the stalls – It’s definitely worth heading down to the rail to watch! Tribal Art is top of the weights for Charlie & Mark Johnston, and with course specialist Joe Fanning onboard they will be hoping for a strong run. Local trainer Keith Dalgleish has also targeted this race with three runners – Heights of Abraham, Diocletian and Haizoom, so this should make for an excellent contest over our longest trip.

At 3.40pm our attention will turn briefly to Newmarket for the Qipco 1000 Guineas, to see who will claim one of Britain’s five Classic races. We’ll be showing the race on the screens around the course and our on-course betting partners will be able to help if you’re looking to have a flutter.

As always, today is an incredibly popular day for young racegoers, and we have a huge array of free off-track entertainment including Denver’s Den Fun House, Pirate Assault Course, Surf Simulator, Nintendo Switch Battles as well as some returning favourites; Segways, Bungee Trampolines, Laser Tag and much, much more.

RACING JARGON BUSTER Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.

ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track DAM mother of a horse DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest.
