Goodwood Racecard - Wednesday 30th July

Wednesday 30 th July 2025

Welcome to the second day of the 2025 Qatar Goodwood Festival, presented by Visit Qatar.

Today’s racecard is led by the crown jewel of this weeks’ event, The Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes, a remarkable showdown that embodies the very soul of the British flat racing season. Recognised as Goodwood’s race of champions, it consistently attracts the superlative of the racing industry. Aptly nicknamed the ‘Duel On The Downs’, it delivers drama and unforgettable triumphs across generations of racing excellence. Legendary champions such as Frankel, Solow, and Mohaather have stamped their names into Goodwood’s turf, each in their own glorious fashion.

First run in 1841 as a two-year-old contest over six furlongs, the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes began modestly before its upgrade in 1878 as a one-mile race for three-year-olds. It cemented its elite status in 1960, allowing older horses to compete for historic victory.

Few races have captured interest quite like this one – Frankel’s back-to-back wins in 2011 and 2012 redefined dominance; Solow’s consistent leading stride dazzled in 2015. Mohaather’s triumph in the final furlong in 2020; Baaeed extended his unbeaten run here in 2022; the lightning-fast Paddington in 2023 and tactical masterclass from Notable Speech last year, kept the tradition alive of sheer brilliance and unpredicted beauty on the track.

We extend our sincere thanks to our presenting partner, Visit Qatar and to all our other partners for their continued support.

On behalf of everyone at Goodwood, we wish you a wonderful and successful day.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL

GOODWOOD HISTORY

Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Raceweek house party at Goodwood in 1931 with the eighth Duke of Richmond.

Refraction, winner of the Oaks in 1845, was one of eleven racehorses owned by the fifth Duke of Richmond, and part of his zenith era as an owner.

Winner of the Richmond Stakes in 1895, Persimmon was the best racehorse owned by King Edward VII.

Edward VII and Queen Alexandra depart from Goodwood for the races in the Royal car, accompained by the seventh Duke of Richmond.

characteristics

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

THE MARKEL MAGNOLIA CUP

IN SUPPORT OF KING’s Trust International

The King’s Trust International has been supporting young people worldwide since 2015. We were founded by His Majesty King Charles III to tackle the global youth unemployment crisis. Right now, young people are 3x more likely than adults to be unemployed and globally almost one in four young people are not in education, employment or training. We provide opportunities to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed and deliver tangible employment outcomes.

Project Lehar (which means wave in Urdu) is transforming the lives of young women in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India - two areas where opportunities for girls are far too limited. Many of these young women are the first in their families to go to school. Some had to leave school early, but Lehar gives them a new opportunity.

Every donation helps more girls build the skills and confidence they need to learn, earn and thrive — and to challenge the barriers they face every day.

Race Summary

A chance to enjoy the world’s best Arabian AL GHADEER. He has this as the first stage in defence of a record breaking third Doha Triple Crown title (includes Qatar Arabian World Cup, ParisLongchamp and HH The Amir Sword, Doha), which he has won for the last two years. Easier European targets have drawn the major opposition away, however Ch’ezza has twice won at this level and will keep him honest. If the unexposed Hadaaya is as good (or better) than his Group 1PA winning half brother, he could make the frame but will need to improve to do so.

TODAY’S FEATURE

visit qatar sussex stakes

GROUP 1, £1 million, 1 mile

The Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes is the jewel in the crown of the Qatar Goodwood Festival with a prize fund topping £1 million. It is established as one of the pre-eminent all-aged contests of the European Pattern, routinely attracting many of the top milers in training.

First run in 1841 as a sprint, the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes has seen several major changes in the intervening years. In 1878 it was establish as a mile race for three-year-olds and in 1960 older horses were allowed to run. It has since evolved to become Goodwood’s race of champions.

The role of honour boasts Royal winners in King Edward VII’s 1909 Derby hero Minoru, and again in 1954 when Landau won sporting the colours of Queen Elizabeth II, while Toranado (2005) gave the Festival’s Qatari backers the first of two victories in the colours of Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani with Qatar Racing’s Lightning Spear followingup in 2018.

Other hall of fame milers to have won this race include Canford Cliffs (2010), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Aljabr (1999), Zilzal (1989), Warning (1988), Soviet Star (1987), Chief Singer (1984), Kris (1979) and Paddington in 2023.

The mighty Frankel wrote his own piece of Goodwood history in 2012 by becoming the first horse to achieve back-to-back Sussex Stakes victories when he jumped off at staggering 1/20 odds.

Last year, Godolphin’s Notable Speech recreated his 2,000 Guineas heroics with ease, becoming the first horse since Frankel to win both the Guineas and the Sussex Stakes in the same season

It will take a similar high-quality performance from the winner of today’s Group 1 highlight to earn a place on the race’s distinguished roll of honour.

Race through history.

Step into the world of professional motorsport and push the limits like never before. This isn’t just a track day; it’s an immersive journey into the mindset, skill, and precision of racing legends.
