Welcome to the opening day of the 2025 Qatar Goodwood Festival, presented by Visit Qatar
This spectacular celebration of racing marks the beginning of five exhilarating days on the South Downs, where heritage and sporting excellence are met with elegance.
The anticipation has been building since the final furlong was run last summer. Now, the wait is over. The elite of the racing community have arrived, ready to etch their names into horseracing history. The Qatar Goodwood Festival presented by Visit Qatar, is renowned for its nonpareil prestige, and this year promises to deliver unforgettable moments and fierce competition across the week’s card.
Today’s feature race, the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, is a true test of skill and class, run across two miles. It stands as one of the sport’s most coveted contests.
In 2024, the recently retired Kyprios, owned by the Coolmore partnership, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, won this race in commanding fashion, adding a second Goodwood Cup to his glittering résumé. The six-year-old galloped to victory by four lengths, setting a new course record of 3 minutes 21.53 seconds.
We proudly welcome Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey, founders of RIXO, as our winners of the 2025 Talent in Fashion Award. We encourage you to look out for their designs as they parade the Racecourse, encapsulating the beauty and multifaceted charm of Goodwood.
After today’s racing, the popular Alan Lee Memorial cricket match between Lord March’s Racing XI and the Sussex Select XI will be held in front of Goodwood House. All are welcome to watch.
We extend our sincere thanks to our presenting partner, Visit Qatar and to all our other partners for their continued support.
On behalf of everyone at Goodwood, we invite you to celebrate the spirit of racing at its finest and wish you success for the glorious week ahead.
The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL
GOODWOOD HISTORY
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.
Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

TALENT IN FASHION
Goodwood Racecourse is delighted to announce a close collaboration with RIXO at this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival presented by Visit Qatar. The vintage-inspired design house is the winner of this year’s Goodwood Talent in Fashion Award, in association with the British Fashion Council. The award, now in its fifth year, was created to recognise homegrown talent.
Inspired by the eclectic beauty of true vintage, co-founders Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey created RIXO in 2015, which is now hailed for its hand-painted prints and flattering silhouettes. The London-based duo deliver an abundance of vibrant patterns with a nostalgic nod from the twenties right through to the sixties and seventies, all while creating an instantly recognisable brand DNA with its vintage-inspired shapes, delicate outlines and playful prints.
In a first, RIXO has designed this year’s jockey silks for the Markel Magnolia Cup. This is the first time that the recipient of the prestigious Talent in Fashion Award will also be creating all 12 racing silk designs for the Markel Magnolia Cup riders.
The Duke of Richmond said:
“We are thrilled that this year’s Goodwood Talent in Fashion winner, RIXO, will also be designing the silks for the Markel Magnolia Cup. Henrietta and Orlagh are designers that have embraced vintage style with a modern elegance that fits perfectly with Goodwood’s timeless fashion. I am delighted that Henrietta and Orlagh’s one-off designs will become part of the Goodwood Collection and we are looking forward to the unveiling of their Magnolia Cup silks.”

ONLY ONE QUALITY, THE FINEST
TODAY ’S FEATURE
the al shaqab goodwood cup
GROUP 1, £500,000, 2m, 3y+
A superb long-distance race first run in 1808, The Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup is the second leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown. It sits between the Ascot Gold Cup and the Doncaster Cup and is the shortest of the three.
It is renowned as the supreme test of stamina and courage. Not only do the horses have to master the marathonic distance, they also must remain balanced in spite of the demands posed by the track’s unique undulations.
The race’s history boasts a litany of all-time staying greats. John Gosden’s Stradivarius made the race his own with an astonishing four consecutive victories, beginning in 2017 and eclipsing Double Trigger’s record three wins gained in 1995, 1997 and 1998. Aidan O’Brien’s star Yeats has an impressive two wins under his name in 2006 and 2008.
Last year proved another one for the history books as Europe’s top stayer Kyprios replicated his Ascot Gold Cup heroics of the previous month to fly past the winning post first in a course record of 3m 21.53s.
The staying superstar suffered a life-threatening infection earlier in his career, but miraculously returned to become Ballydoyle’s Group 1-winningmost horse with eight top-flight wins. He was retired earlier this season leaving a vacuum at the top of the staying division for his old rivals and any new long-distance raiders to capitalise on.
A long history will be embellished today and another champion of the staying division suitably honoured.
