Goodwood Racecard - Thursday 31st July

Thursday 31 st July 2025

Welcome to Ladies Day, the third day of the 2025 Qatar Goodwood Festival, presented by Visit Qatar.

Today’s racecard is headlined by the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, a contest that celebrates fillies and mares’ tenacious attitude on the track. This race began in 1840, running over a mile long and open to three-year-olds. It was extended to 1½ miles in 1900, then shortened to its current trip of just under 1¼ miles in 1911. In 1975, older fillies and mares were allowed to participate, and in 1999, the race was elevated to Group 1 status, firmly earning its place among the elite middle-distance contests in racing.

The Qatar Nassau Stakes over the decades has produced unforgettable champions. Recent winners, Minding, Deirdre, and Nashwa have continued the tradition of brilliance in this race.

The Markel Magnolia Cup is another highlight of the day, a unique charity race that showcases the courage and commitment of inspirational women from all walks of life. First run in 2011, this five-and-a-half-furlong sprint down Goodwood’s home straight is contested by amateur female riders—many of whom had never ridden a racehorse before their training began.

The race has raised over £2.7 million for charitable causes, and this year supports Project Lehar, an initiative by The King’s Trust International that empowers adolescent girls in India through vocational training and gender equality programmes. The Markel Magnolia Cup is not just a race, it’s a celebration of resilience, diversity, and the transformative power of sport.

We extend our sincere thanks to our presenting partner, Visit Qatar and to all our other partners for their continued support.

On behalf of everyone at Goodwood, we wish you a wonderful and profitable day.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL

GOODWOOD HISTORY

Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

MARKEL MAGNOLIA CUP CHARITY RACE

a brief history

The race is named after the Magnolia grandiflora that grow up the front of Goodwood House, and were first introduced to Goodwood by the 2nd Duke of Richmond in the mid-eighteenth century. The beautifully-scented Magnolia flowers were the inspiration behind the perpetual silver cup, designed by famous London silversmiths, Garrard

Since its inception in 2011, the Magnolia Cup’s key objective has always been to raise as much money as possible for female-focused charities and, in doing so, help raise their profiles. Through a mixture of sponsorship, tickets sales from the Regency Ball, private donations, the race has raised over £2.7 million in the years for some very worthy causes, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Winston’s Wish, Wellbeing of Women and My Sisters’ House.

This year we are extremely proud to be supporting the King’s Trust International’s Project Lehar. The initiative operates in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, with a focus on empowering adolescent girls through vocational training, skills development and promoting gender equality within their communities. The project takes a holistic approach, offering a series of complementary learning modules that help girls enhance their earning potential, build self-confidence, and plan for a brighter future.

Our dedicated and brave amateur jockeys train for months leading up to the race, undertaking everything from early morning racing sessions to intensive fitness programmes and jockey training classes. Each rider must pass the BHA assessment before being permitted to ride in today’s five-and-a-half-furlong race.

RIXO

Goodwood Racecourse is thrilled to unveil RIXO’s racing silks for the 14th running of the Markel Magnolia Cup. This year’s colourful, vintage-inspired designs have been curated by the London-based fashion house, which is also Goodwood’s 2025 Talent in Fashion Award winner.

RIXO drew inspiration from some of their favourite hand painted prints and patterns, delving into their archive, to create 12 unique silks for the charity race, putting fashion on the racecourse.

Co-founders Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey created RIXO in 2015 and now have stores in the UK, USA and Ireland. Born from their shared passion for vintage, they wanted to capture the thrill of discovery and are hailed for their colourful prints and flattering silhouettes.

RIXO Print Designer, Linda Moloney, said:

“We worked really hard with Orlagh to make sure that we put our best signature RIXO prints on these jockey silks, they’re bright and beautiful patterns. We wanted every jockey to feel special and empowered, which is the ethos of RIXO.”

THANK YOU

The Markel Magnolia Cup owes thanks to the ladies who have worked so hard towards today’s race and to the owners, trainers and racing organisations that have generously supported us.

THE MARKEL MAGNOLIA CUP IN SUPPORT OF KING’s Trust International

The King’s Trust International has been supporting young people worldwide since 2015. We were founded by His Majesty King Charles III to tackle the global youth unemployment crisis. Right now, young people are 3x more likely than adults to be unemployed and globally almost one in four young people are not in education, employment or training. We provide opportunities to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed and deliver tangible employment outcomes.

Project Lehar (which means wave in Urdu) is transforming the lives of young women in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India - two areas where opportunities for girls are far too limited. Many of these young women are the first in their families to go to school. Some had to leave school early, but Lehar gives them a new opportunity.

Every donation helps more girls build the skills and confidence they need to learn, earn and thrive — and to challenge the barriers they face every day.

qatar nassau stakes

GROUP 1, £600,000, 1m2f, 3yo fillies and mares

The international aspect of the Qatar Goodwood Festival is further underlined with the running of Thursday’s feature race, the Qatar Nassau Stakes.

Inaugurated in 1840, the race celebrates the friendship between the fifth Duke of Richmond, a former owner of Goodwood racecourse, and the Dutch Royal Family, the House of Orange-Nassau.

The race was restricted to three-year-old fillies for the first 135 years of its running, but was opened up to older horses in 1975. In 1999, it was granted Group 1 status. Now, it is the most significant mid-summer race of the year for fillies and mares. More often than not, it provides a captivating blend of the Classic generation’s emerging stars and the established champions of previous years.

The race’s role of honour includes some of the sport’s most celebrated fillies, such as the amazing chestnut Midday, who won it three times consecutively beginning in 2009. In 2006, Ed Dunlop’s seven-time Group 1 winner Ouija Board stormed to victory under Frankie Dettori.

More recently, Deirdre provided a notable win for her Japanese connections in a record time of 2.02.93 under Oisin Murphy, solidifying the international angle of the race.

Lady Bowthorpe was a hugely popular winner of the 2021 running, delivering jockey Kieran Shoemark his maiden Group 1 success. The victory also brought an emotional end to a long wait for trainer William Jarvis, who celebrated his first win at Group 1 level in 27 years – and the final of his distinguished training career.

Last year, Aidan O’Brien’s Opera Singer dug deep to hold off Andrew Balding’s See The Fire, adding another tally on the mostly unshakeable record of well-fancied runners in the race. Eight of the last twelve winners have been well-established in the top three of the betting.

This year will no doubt take another very high calibre filly or mare to cross the line first.
