Welcome to the third day of the 2026 Qatar Goodwood Festival, presented by Visit Qatar.
Today we celebrate Ladies’ Day, where style and world-class racing come together. The feature race is the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, a contest that has long been recognised as one of Europe’s premier races for fillies and mares.
First run in 1840, the Qatar Nassau Stakes has earned an outstanding reputation for showcasing exceptional talent, with many of its winners going on to achieve international acclaim. Its distinguished roll of honour features some of the sport’s most memorable performers, whose victories at Goodwood have cemented the race’s place among the highlights of the global racing calendar.
Ladies’ Day also welcomes the return of the Markel Magnolia Cup, where inspirational women from a wide range of backgrounds come together to race in support of charitable causes. The race has raised over £3.5 million since its inception in 2011, and this year supports Education Above All. It remains one of the festival’s most distinctive and uplifting traditions, celebrating achievement, determination and opportunity both on and off the racecourse.
We extend our sincere thanks to our presenting partner, Visit Qatar and to all our other partners for their continued support.
On behalf of everyone at Goodwood, we wish you a wonderful and profitable day.
The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL
GOODWOOD HISTORY
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.
Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

MARKEL MAGNOLIA CUP CHARITY RACE
a brief history
The race is named after the Magnolia grandiflora that grows up the front of Goodwood House, and were first introduced to Goodwood by the 2nd Duke of Richmond in the mideighteenth century. The beautifully-scented Magnolia flowers were the inspiration behind the perpetual silver cup, designed by famous London silversmiths, Garrard.
The charity race has raised more than £3.5 million since its launch in 2011, supporting children and female focused charities, while continuing to break boundaries for women in racing.
This year, the race will raise funds for Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, a global education non-profit. The foundation transforms the lives of children and young people affected by poverty, conflict and disaster through education and employment opportunities and has supported more than 18 million children and young people across 77 countries since it was established in 2012 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.
Our dedicated and brave amateur jockeys train for months leading up to the race, undertaking everything from early morning racing sessions to intensive fitness programmes and jockey training classes. Each rider must pass the BHA assessment before being permitted to ride in today’s five-and-a-half-furlong race
gabriela hearst
Goodwood Racecourse is delighted to collaborate with Gabriela Hearst on a collection of jockey silks designs for the 2026 Markel Magnolia Cup. Following in the footsteps of Vivienne Westwood, Sarah Burton, Roksanda Ilincic and Mary Katrantzou, Gabriela has designed 12 individual prints for the incredible riders.
Gabriela is a seventh-generation rancher, born and raised on her family’s 17,000-acre Uruguayan ranch surrounded by horses. Gabriela launched her eponymous label in 2015, and from 2020 to 2023, was the first Latin American designer to helm a major Paris fashion House with her appointment at Chloé. Gabriela’s industry-leading work in sustainable fashion has been recognised with several awards from the CFDA or the British Fashion Council, and most recently, in 2024, she was honoured with the TIME Earth Award for her leadership in climate justice and for pioneering sustainable practices. In March 2025, she was named to the inaugural National Geographic 33 list, recognizing her as a global changemaker whose work is actively shaping a more sustainable future for the planet. Her designs have been worn by many personalities, including the likes of Dr. Jill Biden (at the 2021 presidential inauguration), Kamala Harris, during her presidential campaign, Oscar nominee Chloé Zhao, Angelina Jolie, Laura Dern and Gillian Anderson.
For the 2026 Markel Magnolia Cup, Gabriela Hearst has selected and reissued a series of her most evocative prints from the House’s archive, in the new context of the jockey silk. Each of the 12 individual silks represents a different period from the past decade of the label’s history, showcasing a consistent vision and approach to colour and print. This collection bridges Gabriela’s deep-rooted equestrian heritage with the spirit of this special race at Goodwood and the extraordinary women competing on the track.

THE SPIRIT AWARD IN MEMORY OF PIP HITCHMAN
The inaugural Spirit Award has been created in honour of Pip Hitchman.
A much-loved member of the Goodwood Racecourse team from 2012–2015, Pip played an integral role in shaping the Magnolia Cup in its early years and helping establish it as the inspirational event it is today.
A lifelong horsewoman, Pip’s passion for horses was reflected even in her name, Philippa, meaning “lover of horses”. From Pony Club and hunting to point-to-pointing, racing and polo, horses were at the heart of her life and career During her time at Goodwood, she dedicated enormous energy to supporting Magnolia Cup riders, working closely with trainers, owners and participants, and championing both rider experience and horse welfare.
Pip brought infectious energy, warmth, and dedication to everything she did, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The Spirit Award will be presented annually to the Magnolia Cup rider who best embodies the qualities that defined Pip: spirit, determination, positivity, sportsmanship, horsemanship, and a commitment to supporting those around them.
Pip passed away in December 2025 after a bravely fought battle with cancer.
Presented between the first and second race in the Winners’ Enclosure, the award serves as a lasting tribute to Pip and celebrates the character, passion and generosity of spirit that made her so special.
