Virgin Bet Raceday Preview
1.50pm - Mister Winston was a runaway winner in a 6-runner handicap at Newmarket earlier this month. The Andrew Balding 3-year-old colt goes up a hefty 10lbs in the weight, making this a tougher assignment but comes here on good form and looks one of the more likely winners. Back on the racecourse after a 3-month break, Great Chieftain makes his first start for Oliver Cole since recently joining the yard and is looking for his 3rd win on the bounce, now running off a career high mark of 93. The Simon & Ed Crisford team have Treble Tee representing the yard and will be hoping the 2nd time wind op brings about some improvement after a narrow defeat to Big Leader this month at Thirsk. 2.25pm - Moon Target has obvious claims here, now stepping up to Group 3 company after two impressive wins at Newmarket and Yarmouth. The daughter of Cracksman certainly deserves a shot at taking a group race, but this race will test her ability. The Aidan O’ Brien trained, Precise, clearly improved last time out when winning her maiden race at Cork. She finished off that race well and must be respected for strong connections. Aylin is a course and distance winner but that win came on heavy ground so it will be interesting to see if she came back up her last performance on today’s drier surface. 3.00pm - Get It was the winner of the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot but failed to back up that performance when finishing last of 27 runners in the Stewards’ Cup on good to soft ground. Jakajaro finished 3rd the Stewards’ Cup and a mark of 97 looks fair. Flash Harry is lightly raced and there could be plenty more of improvement to come from the Clive Cox 3-year-old who finished 3rd in the Shergar Cup Sprint, last time out at Ascot 3.35pm - Seven runners go to post for the Group 2 Virgin Bet Celebration Mile. Jonquil finished running behind Henri Matisse in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains at Longchamp which was his only run over today’s 1 mile trip. The Andrew Balding colt has plenty of speed but should stay the trip ok but was a little disappointing here in the Lennox Stakes a few weeks ago. Saqqara Sands was a dead heat joint winner in the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes here at Goodwood. The Ralph Beckett trained filly will step up to the 1 mile trip for the first time but she looks like a horse who may be suited by the extra distance. Persica finished 5th of 10 runners in the Group 1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen in Munich on soft ground. He steps back to a mile trip and a repeat of his performance of the Diomed Stakes at Epsom, would see him go close today for the Richard Hannon yard. 4.10pm - Alfaraz, from the Andrew Balding stable, looks a nicely bred colt by Nathaniel and out of a Siyouni mare. It will be interesting to see what the market makes of his chances on debut. King’s Trust will break from stall 1 today. He ran reasonably well in a Newmarket maiden, showing pace after a less than ideal start. He also got nudged and had to check his run in the final furlong. He would be expected to improve for the run. 4.45pm - Forever Penywern steps up in trip today and looks to be one for the shortlist after a decent effort in a maiden at Yarmouth over 1 ¼ miles. Arkinthestars has tactical speed and she has some nice performances already produced this season, including winning a class 4 handicap at Doncaster on good to firm ground. Nanny Park has the tendency to hang badly and others are preferred. 5.20pm - Youthful King steps back in grade after finishing 6th of 9 runners in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot. His win in a handicap at Sandown over a 1 mile 6-furlong trip makes him a danger here now off a higher mark of 89. Aggagio may be more suited stepping back in trip and must be respected having previously won over course and distance. Deep Water Bay was a nice winner when making the running at Newbury but has a tougher task today now 5lbs higher in the weights, but he looks an improved horse for the step up in trip and a chance is taken that he can make it three wins in a row.

THE COURSE c o ur s e c h a r a c t er i s t i c s Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Race Summary Having continued his upward trajectory when completing a double at Haydock in May, Great Chieftain warrants respect in his bid to land a hat-trick. A 4lb higher mark shouldn’t prevent Oliver Cole’s charge from remaining competitive, but MISTER WINSTON looks open to more improvement. The son of Churchill made light work of his rivals at Newmarket earlier this month and he could be up to defying a 10lb hike from the handicapper. Treble Tee and Tribal Chief are others to consider.

Race Summary MOON TARGET has impressed on both victories to date and she has more than earned a crack at Group 3 company. The daughter of Cracksman has been described by Sir Mark Prescott as being his best juvenile and she could land this en route to bigger things. Precise built on her debut second at Fairyhouse when opening her account at Cork 10 days ago and is feared most, ahead of fellow progressive rival Aylin, who has the advantage of track experience following her success at the Glorious meeting.

Wokingham winner GET IT shouldn’t be judged too harshly on his Stewards’ Cup disappointment as underfoot conditions didn’t appear to suit. The seven-year-old should prove far more competitive in this weaker affair and an 11th career victory may be in order. Race Summary JONQUIL can be forgiven for failing to feature in a messy renewal of the Lennox Stakes here last month. He returns to a mile for the first time since narrowly beaten in the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp and Andrew Balding’s charge could prove hard to beat if back to the same level. Persica also reverts to today’s distance with solid claims on his defeat of last year’s winner Ice Max in the Diomed at Epsom in June, while Listed winner Make Me King is not out of it either.

2024: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR
Race Summary Ancient Egypt will find life tougher burdened with a penalty for winning at Beverley on debut. Green Falcon is preferred after finishing fourth in a conditions race in France, but it’s KING’S TRUST that makes most appeal. The latter made a satisfactory debut when fourth behind Royal Lodge entry Al Zanati over 7f at Newmarket, and the son of Kingman will likely prove a more potent force over this extra furlong.

STEWARDS NOTED: NANNY PARK:Following its run on 16/8/2025 it was reported that the horse hung badly left-handed.
Race Summary OCEAN OF DREAMS sets a fair standard based on the official ratings and may find this turns out to be a good deal easier than the levels he has become accustomed to facing. Nanny Park gets weight from the rest and is a potential improver over this trip, while Arkinthestars is a likely pace angle that shouldn’t be underestimated. Yarborough is less exposed than Wise Counsellor, so also warrants close inspection.

Race Summary BELGRAVIAN is developing well as a stayer and could be well placed to complete a hat-trick after ready successes at Doncaster and Haydock. Another 7lb rise for the latest of those wins isn’t insurmountable and the son of Make Believe is hard to oppose running for a bang in-form yard. Deep Water Bay is also on for a three-timer and is the obvious one for the forecast slot. Aggagio and Kitty Foyle are the pick of the remainder.
