Welcome to the Coral Stewards’ Cup Day, the grand finale of the 2025 Qatar Goodwood Festival, presented by Visit Qatar.
Saturday at Goodwood is a day of celebration, a wonderful end to five days of world-class racing, unforgettable moments, and traditional festivities.
Today features the fiercely competitive Coral Stewards’ Cup, one of the most prestigious sprint handicaps in the sport.
Also on today’s racecard is the Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes, a challenging contest of speed and stamina, open to fillies and mares of three-year-old and over. First run in 2003, this one mile and six-furlong test has quickly become a racing season highlight, showcasing the finest female talent. Past winners such as Enbihaar, Wonderful Tonight, and Sea La Rosa have paved the way for future champions, each displaying poise and power in equal measure.
As the 2025 Qatar Goodwood Festival draws to a close, we bid farewell to one of the most cherished weeks in British flat racing and extend our thanks to all who have joined us this week. Your passion, energy, and love for racing are what make this festival so special.
We extend our sincere thanks to our presenting partner, Visit Qatar and to all our other partners for their continued support.
On behalf of everyone at Goodwood, we wish you a thrilling and memorable final day.
The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL
GOODWOOD HISTORY
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.
Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.
King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra depart from Goodwood for the races in the Royal car, accompained by the seventh Duke of Richmond.
Winner of the Richmond Stakes in 1895, Persimmon was the best racehorse owned by King Edward VII.

characteristics
Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

THE MARKEL MAGNOLIA CUP
IN SUPPORT OF KING’s Trust International
The King’s Trust International has been supporting young people worldwide since 2015. We were founded by His Majesty King Charles III to tackle the global youth unemployment crisis. Right now, young people are 3x more likely than adults to be unemployed and globally almost one in four young people are not in education, employment or training. We provide opportunities to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed and deliver tangible employment outcomes.
Project Lehar (which means wave in Urdu) is transforming the lives of young women in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India - two areas where opportunities for girls are far too limited. Many of these young women are the first in their families to go to school. Some had to leave school early, but Lehar gives them a new opportunity.
Every donation helps more girls build the skills and confidence they need to learn, earn and thrive — and to challenge the barriers they face every day.

Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes
GROUP 2, £300,000, 1m6f, 3yo+, fillies and mares
The Lillie Langtry Stakes is for fillies and mares of three-years-old and upwards and run over a mile and six furlongs. A relatively new introduction, it was established in 2003, classified as ‘Listed’, and known as the Gladness Stakes, after the 1958 Goodwood Cup winner
The following year, the race was upgraded to Group 3 status and renamed in celebration of Lillie Langtry, one of the most famous women of the Victorian / Edwardian era. The actresscum-socialite had a passion for horseracing and famously had an affair with the Prince of Wales and future Edward VII who shared the same passion for horseracing.
The race was upgraded again in 2018 to Group 2 status. With its enhanced prize money fund, the Lillie Langtry Stakes continues to attract a high-class field and is often used as a platform for emerging stars to showcase their talent and established performers to consolidate their reputations.
In its short but notable tenure, the race has produced some memorable winners both as a Group 3 and Group 2 contest.
The brilliant Simple Verse, ridden by Harry Bentley, went on to take her place in racing history with Classic success in the St Leger at Doncaster. The Ralph Beckett-trained star went on to score in the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot.
Last year’s race was particularly special as Irish National Hunt trainer Henry de Bromhead saddled the winner in Term Of Endearment, his first ever runner at Goodwood. It was also jockey Billy Lee’s first ride around the Sussex track and the Grand National-winning trainer’s biggest success on the flat, making it a day for firsts.
This year’s running will undoubtably see a thrilling competition between the established mares and new fillies on the block.

TODAY’S FEATURE
coral stewards’ cup
Handicap, £250,000, 6f, 3y+
The Coral Stewards’ Cup, a delightfully hectic cavalry charge of up to 28 runners over six furlongs, is the betting race of the week.
Over the years, it has thrown up some very classy winners such as Lochsong, (1992), Danetime (1997) and Borderslescott (2006), who went on to secure multiple Group 1 triumphs.
Formally inaugurated in 1840, the race dates back six years earlier, when it was run on the opening day of the meeting. Then, the Senior Steward was invited to present a cup to the winner of any race of his choosing. As a result, the race was run over a variety of distances in its early days from six furlongs to a mile and a half.
The tradition was discontinued and the Stewards’ Cup was eventually established as a six furlongs contest. Later, in 1993, it was moved to the final day of the festival where it remains, providing a final highlight to a thrilling week.
Recent years have also produced many an electrifying renewal. In 2018, Brighton-born Jason Watson teamed up with top-weight Gifted Master for Hugo Palmer to score en-route to winning the 2019 Champion Apprentice title.
Khaadem and Summerghand added their names to the distinguished roll of honour in 2019 and 2020 respectively, before Commanche Falls, under Connor Beasley, became the sixth back-to-back winner in 2023.
Last year’s race was another one for the history books when local boy-come-good, George Baker, saddled 40-1 shot Get It to win under Pat Cosgrave. A never-ending stream of family and friends invaded the paddock for some unrivalled celebrations having landed the valuable £250,000 pot.
