2026 FOURTH DAY OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

Souq Waqif

Friday 31 st July 2026

W

elcome to King George Qatar Stakes Day, the fourth day of the 2026 Qatar Goodwood Festival, presented by Visit Qatar.

Today’s racecard is headlined by the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, a five-furlong sprint of pace and precision. This is where the fastest horses in training come to prove their prowess on the track, and where fractions of a second separate glory from defeat. The King George Qatar Stakes roll of honour includes sprinting legends such as Lochsong, Take Cover, and the unparalleled Battaash, whose four consecutive wins from 2017 to 2020 redefined dominance on the track. More recently, Highfield Princess and last year’s winner JM Jungle, trained by John and Sean Quinn, have added their names to this prestigious race. Alongside the feature contest, today’s card offers a superb mix of quality and competition, with races showcasing both established stars and emerging talent across the afternoon. We extend our sincere heartfelt thanks to our presenting partner, Visit Qatar and the support from all of our other partners. On behalf of everyone at Goodwood, we wish you a spectacular and successful day.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL

G O O D W O O D H I S TO RY Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs. Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection

Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Refraction, winner of the Oaks in 1845, was one of eleven racehorses owned by the fifth Duke of Richmond, and part of his zenith era as an owner.

Roncesvalles was one of the fifth Duke of Richmond’s most successful racehorses, winning six races between 1818 and 1821.

T H E C O U RS E c o u r se c h a r a c t er i s t i c s Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

2025 WINNER: RHOSCOLYN 7 9 6 Daniel Tudhope 11-2 (David O’Meara) 15 ran

STEWARDS NOTED: TWO TEMPTING:Following its run on 7/3/2026 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running. TRIBAL CHIEF:Following its run on 4/7/2026 it was reported that the horse was slowly away.

Race Summary In a tricky race that hasn’t seen a winning favourite since 2020, eight of the last 10 winners have come from a low draw which points to the chances of TRIBAL CHIEF. He runs his best races when held up, has Jamie Spencer on board for 2024 winning trainer David Menusier and with his last win over C&D last August, he looks to have been targeted at this contest. The selection finished behind Indalo when that rival gained a deserved success at Sandown after a string of placed efforts, including the Cambridgeshire and the Royal Hunt Cup, and a 3lb swing may prove to be his undoing here. Blue Brother appeals most of the remainder.

TOD AY ’S F E AT U R E k i n g g e or g e q ata r s ta k e s GROUP 2, £300,000, 5f, 3yo+ Goodwood’s premier sprint, the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes is one of the season’s signature five-furlong contests and a regular meeting point for the fastest horses in training. A relatively modern addition in the context of Goodwood’s long history, the race was inaugurated in 1911 to mark the accession of King George V. More than a century on, it has firmly established itself as one of the British Flat season’s leading sprint prizes. The roll of honour features many outstanding speedsters. Lochsong announced herself as one of Britain’s greatest sprinters with back-to-back victories in 1993 and 1994, while the race has become synonymous with the brilliant Battaash. Trained by Charlie Hills and ridden by Jim Crowley, the Shadwell star produced four successive victories between 2017 and 2020, a remarkable sequence that cemented his place among Goodwood’s modern greats. Recent renewals have continued to showcase the depth of sprinting talent. Mick Appleby’s Big Evs denied the Australian raider Asfoora in a thrilling finish in 2024, while last year JM Jungle, trained by John and Sean Quinn and ridden by Jason Hart, stepped up from handicap company to claim Group honours with a determined victory. Another fiercely competitive field assembles this afternoon for one of the fastest and most prestigious races of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

this is summer, o n ly at g o o d w o o d What does summer at Goodwood sound like? Birdsong drifting through an open window, the rev of an engine, the crunch of feet through woodland and the clink of glasses as the sun begins to set behind the South Downs.
