GOODWOOD RACES 2025

FRIDAY 2 MAY

OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

WELCOME TO THE SEASON OPENER

Welcome to day one of our 2025 Season Opener. This marks the start of an exciting summer of racing across 19 days of horseracing.

Today’s seven-race card marks the much-anticipated return of flat racing to the South Downs, with quality and variety set to delight racegoers.

A wealth of emerging talent will be on display, beginning with the Racing To School Reaches 250,000 EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, where sharp twoyear-olds make their first impression over five furlongs. That’s followed by the British Stallion Studs John Dunlop EBF Conditions Stakes, a race held in memory of the legendary trainer John Dunlop, who had many triumphs at Goodwood with the likes of Posse in the 1980 Qatar Sussex Stakes.

The afternoon continues with four competitive handicaps, headlined by the £40,000 Racehorse Ownership From £25 At Racingclub.com Handicap Stakes over the minimum trip. Our first Listed race of the season, The British Stallion Studs EBF Daisy Warwick Fillies’ Stakes, adds further quality to the card and acts as a valuable stepping stone for fillies and mares.

For this meeting, The Double Trigger Restaurant will be reimagined as a pop-up dining experience curated by the nationally acclaimed, family-run seafood restaurant, Crabshack - who specialise in sustainable seafood.

We extend our sincere thanks to Racingclub.com, Elston Consulting and the Trustees of the European Breeders’ Fund for their generous support of today’s racing.

We do hope you enjoy the afternoon of thrilling sport and expert hospitality, and we warmly invite you to return tomorrow for Day Two of our Season Opener, which promises another outstanding card – featuring another Listed race, the Racingclub.com Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes.

On behalf of all of us at Goodwood, I wish you a successful and enjoyable season ahead.

course characteristics

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.
