GOODWOOD RACES 2024
TUESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
TUESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Welcome to Goodwood for the first of two late summer afternoons of Midweek racing on the Sussex Downs.
Today’s seven-race programme provides opportunities for a wide variety of horses from novice two-year-olds to more accomplished handicappers. With almost £130,000 in prize money at stake, we are assured of some exciting racing.
The feature race this afternoon commemorates the late Peter Willett, an acknowledged expert of the Thoroughbred, Turf historian, author and an architect of the European Pattern - the structure around which Europe’s most significant races continue to be run to this day Peter’s contribution to the sport of horseracing is fondly remembered today.
The British EBF Peter Willett Future Stayers’ Maiden Stakes is supported by a valuable handicap celebrating Goodwood’s proud historical association with the Royal Sussex Regiment, a friendship which extends more than 220 years to the very beginnings of racing here on the Downs.
There have been some memorable winners of both contests but one who will perhaps resonate most with Goodwood racegoers in recent years is Aggagio who won the Royal Sussex Regiment Handicap in 2022. Aggagio was bought out of our August Bank Holiday weekend selling race the previous year and proved a very shrewd purchase for Gary and Leanne Robinson’s Aura Racing, winning six times for them under both codes including three more successes here at Goodwood.
Our thanks as ever are due to our race sponsors today, the European Breeders’ Fund, Cleansing Service Group and our Official Fixed Odds Betting Partner William Hill.
I wish them and you a pleasant afternoon’s racing and hope to see you all again when we return for more Midweek racing on Wednesday, 25th September

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Pantile Warrior has progressed with each start to date and has to be of interest following a narrow defeat at Newbury. That said, preference is for MIGHTY BOY, who displayed plenty of promise when second in a valuable event at Deauville on his debut and the son of Zarak is entitled to improve for that experience. Watching Stars was well held in fourth on his racecourse bow at Newmarket but should not be discounted. All of the newcomers make some appeal, but Seacruiser is marginally the pick of them.

2023 WINNER: GLAMOROUS BREEZE 5 9 9 Gina Mangan 2-1 (Christopher Mason) 6 ran STEWARDS NOTED: ANGLE LAND:Following its run on 24/8/2024 it was reported that the horse lost its left-hind shoe.
Night On Earth has to be of interest following his success at Catterick last week, but a 5lb penalty for that victory has to be a slight concern. As a result, the vote goes to ALLIGATOR ALLEY, who only found one too good over C&D 10 days ago and returns off the same mark. Kiss And Run scored over track and trip recently and is another with strong form claims
Win: ALLIGATOR ALLEY
Danger: Night On Earth

A chance is taken on the unexposed DURHAM CASTLE showing further improvement now handicapping. The three-year-old landed a maiden at Southwell on his return from a layoff and William Buick’s presence in the saddle is another positive. Many A Star was successful over C&D at this time last year and a recent placed effort at Windsor suggests a return to the winner’s enclosure is imminent. Rhythm N Hooves is hard to predict, but drops in class and won off a higher mark at Doncaster back in May.
Win: DURHAM CASTLE

TIGER BEETLE:Following its run on 1/8/2024 it was reported that the horse slipped on the bend late-on. HOORNBLOWER:Following its run on 23/7/2024 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed. TWIN EARTH:Following its run on 23/8/2024 it was reported that the horse was slowly away and ran too free. MELERI:Following its run on 26/7/2024 it was reported that the horse was slowly away JIMMY MARK:Following its run on 14/8/2024 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.
Pink Lily was successful here off 2lb lower in June, but she has run poorly recently and others appear to have stronger credentials. Solanna makes his Goodwood debut after a Yarmouth second but he has 2lb more now and steps up in class, so MELERI is the pick. Beaten half a length at Sandown in July and only upped 1lb, a better start here may be enough to see her home in front.
Win: MELERI Danger: Solanna HAVE YOUR SAY How has your racecourse visit been today? Scan the QR Code
