FRIDAY 23 AUGUST
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
FRIDAY 23 AUGUST
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Welcome to Goodwood for the start of our three-day August Bank Holiday fixture.
This weekend boasts world-class racing combined with a host of family entertainment which begins this evening with a breath-taking fireworks display set to music and features an explosion of colour to light up the sky over West Sussex after racing.
Our traditional fairground returns, offering free rides for younger racegoers and live music throughout the evening to add to the relaxed summer atmosphere. The action on the track promises to be competitive comprising an intriguing mix of handicaps run over distances from five furlongs to one mile and three furlongs and featuring the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes.
Our thanks are due to our partners and supporters who this evening include our Official Fixed Odds Betting Partner, William Hill, the European Breeders’ Fund, White & Brooks and the Amateur Jockeys’ Association who name a race on tonight’s card in memory of their former President and British Champion Amateur Jump Jockey, Gay Kindersley.
I wish them and you a spectacular evening and hope we will see you again over the bank holiday weekend when our three-day festival of racing and family entertainment continues.

course characteristics
Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Things didn't pan out as hoped for MOLLIE FOSTER when she contested a Listed race at Deauville three weeks ago but she can get back on track with her sights lowered here. The daughter of Acclamation, who bettered her commendable second over this C&D on debut by landing a novice at Haydock last month, has plenty of scope for progression and tops the shortlist. Fellow previous winners Queen All Star and Sweet Sonata look the pick of the opposition.
Win: MOLLIE FOSTER

MALLAVELLY:Following its run on 20/7/2024 it was reported that the horse was never travelling.
PASHA emerged as the ready winer of a fillies maiden at Nottingham last week and, turned out under a 6lb penalty, the daughter of Advertise is an obvious candidate to follow up. Imitate represents powerful connections and is an appealing alternative to the selection on her handicap debut. Dramatic Effect, a C&D winner in June, is another notable contender given this represents a drop in class for her, while Crystal Casque is also considered.
Win: PASHA Danger: Imitate

KATE THE COOK appeared to relish the step up to this trip when scoring gamely at Ffos Las last month, pulling clear with the runner-up. Now making her handicap debut off what looks a workable mark, she gets the vote to land the spoils for the in-form Ralph Beckett team. Crystal Flyer found only one rival too good when second over 1m4f at Ascot when last seen and she should be on the premises once more nudged up just 1lb. D Day Arvalenreeva is also a key player

Richard Hughes has his string in fine form at present and his MISS ANYA edges preference. She was sporting blinkers for the first time (retained) when finishing runner-up over this trip at Newmarket recently and, nudged up 1lb, another bold showing should be forthcoming. Cluedo catches the eye off just 3lb higher than her last winning mark and, on her first start since wind surgery, she is respected most of the remainder Four Adaay completes the shortlist on the back of a solid runner-up effort at Yarmouth earlier this month.
Win: MISS ANYA

The Gay Kindersley Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap is run in memory of one of the most engaging figures to appear on the racecourse. As the son of Oonagh Guinness, Gay was fiercely proud of his Irish heritage. A natural raconteur born with an easy charm, he was educated at Eton College where he formed a life-long friendship with His Grace the late 10th Duke of Richmond and Gordon, and from this the link with amateur racing at Goodwood was made.
Gay was a former champion amateur jump jockey and one of the first jockeys to ride in FEGENTRI, the international association for amateur jockeys, forming lasting friendships wherever he went. He broke his back twice during his riding career but continued to ride against doctor’s orders and his last winning ride was in Belgium in 1969. After retiring from race riding, Gay became an established trainer in Berkshire. His life-long ambition was to win the Grand National and he came agonisingly close to achieving this when his part-owned Carrickbeg, ridden by his dear friend Lord Oaksey, was caught by Ayala in the final strides of the race in 1963.
On retiring from training in 1985, Gay relished his role as President of the Amateur Jockeys Association, of which he played a full and active part right up until his death in 2011 aged 80. He will always be remembered with great fondness by his many friends for his wonderful sense of humour, his engaging naivety and his utmost humility. We welcome his widow, Philippa, to Goodwood today to present the trophy in his fond memory
