Goodwood Racecard - Saturday 3rd August

Page 1

Saturday 3 rd August

Welcome to the fifth and final day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Our race programme today features a high-class contest for fillies and mares in the Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes and the highlight handicap of the festival, the £250,000 Coral Stewards’ Cup.

The Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes pays homage to the remarkable late nineteenth and early twentieth century actress, a captivating and much-admired entertainer known for her love of horseracing who became the mistress of the Prince of Wales, the future Edward V11.

Lillie Langtry was a celebrated racehorse owner and raced under the pseudonym of ‘Mr Jersey’, a reference to her birthplace. ‘Mr Jersey’ enjoyed considerable success including a double at Goodwood in 1899 with Merman, winning both the Goodwood Stakes and the Goodwood Cup. The race was introduced in 2003.

By contrast, early origins of the race that has become established as one of the most thrilling spectacles of the summer racing season, the Coral Stewards’ Cup, can be traced back prior to its formal inauguration in 1840 when the Senior Steward of the day was invited to present a cup to the winner of any race of his choosing.

In its modern-day format and with a big purse at stake, the Coral Stewards’ Cup routinely achieves a maximum field size of 28 and the sight of them as they appear into view over the dip from the six furlong start is a vision to behold.

Our thanks are due to this week’s Presenting Partner, the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, our Official Fixed Odds Betting Partner Coral, Whispering Angel and the European Breeders’ Fund for their support of today’s card.

I hope you will continue to enjoy racing at Goodwood for the remainder of the season which continues with our fireworks evening on Friday, 23rd August heralding the start of our three-day Bank Holiday fixture.

I very much hope to see you then.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL

GOODWOOD HISTORY

Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra depart from Goodwood for the races in the Royal car, accompained by the seventh Duke of Richmond.

Winner of the Richmond Stakes in 1895, Persimmon was the best racehorse owned by King Edward VII.

course characteristics

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

TODAY’S FEATURE

coral

stewards’ cup

A fiercely competitive event, the Coral Stewards’ Cup has a rich heritage with the likes of Lochsong, who won the race in 1992, showcasing her extraordinary sprinting talents, Danetime (1997), Borderslescott, who clinched a notable victory in 2006 before going on to secure multiple Group 1 triumphs, and Hoof It (2011) all making their mark in what is without doubt one of the most thrilling spectacles of the summer racing season.

Formally inaugurated in 1840, the race dates back some six years earlier, when it was run on the opening day of the meeting, and the Senior Steward was invited to present a cup to the winner of any race of his choosing. As a result, the race was run over a variety of distances in its early days from six furlongs to a mile and a half.

That tradition having been discontinued, the Stewards’ Cup was eventually established as a six furlongs contest and in 1993 moved to the final day of the festival where it sits as the highlight handicap of the week.

Recent years have produced many thrilling renewals. In 2018, Brighton-born Jason Watson, teamed up with top-weight Gifted Master for Hugo Palmer to score en-route to winning the 2019 champion apprentice title. Khaadem and Summerghand added their names to the distinguished roll of honour in 2019 and 2020 respectively before Commanche Falls, ridden by Connor Beasley, became the sixth back-to-back winner last year following his success twelve months earlier.

Those who witnessed last year’s renewal when 18-1 shot Aberama Gold under Andrea Atzeni was forced to fight off a strong challenge from Richard Kingscote and Apollo One, did so largely under shelter. The late afternoon’s torrential rain abated briefly for the running of the race, but the magnificent sight of an almost full-field of 27 emerging from the dip masking the six furlong start was to be the final spectacle of the festival, with the remainder of the card abandoned shortly after due to the weather and ground conditions.

Doubtless though, trainer David O’Meara and connections of the winner of the £250,000 feature will recall the 2023 Coral Stewards’ Cup as their day in the sun.
