Welcome to Ladies’ Day and the third day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Today we can expect to see fashion to the fore as the ladies put their best foot forward and embrace the style and glamour of a day’s racing on Sussex Downs.
Appropriately, today’s bumper programme begins with a celebration of female talent as 12 inspirational women riders come under starter’s orders for the 13th running of the Markel Magnolia Cup.
The Markel Magnolia Cup has raised a staggering £2.4 million for charitable causes since its inception and this year will support the West Sussex women’s centre, My Sister’s House.
On their behalf I extend sincere appreciation to all those involved in enabling this unique and valuable event and in particular, to the riders who have endured months of training in order to take part and raise vital funds.
Taking centre stage on our nine-race programme is the Qatar Nassau Stakes, a one mile and two furlongs contest restricted to fillies and mares.
Its roll of honour includes Sceptre and Pretty Polly, both champion fillies of the early twentieth century, and more recently Ouija Board whose epic battle for the line with Alexander Goldrun in 2006 will live long in the memory, the magnificent Midday who dominated the race for three consecutive years from 2009 and Nashwa who helped Hollie Doyle to become the first female rider to capture the Group 1 contest two years ago.
Last year Nashwa’s repeat bid resulted in her having to settle for third place behind Jim Crowley and Al Husn to the delight of her owner, Shadwell principal, Her Highness Sheikha Hissa bint Hamdan Al Maktoum.
We thank our Presenting Partner, the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, and also Magnolia Cup and Group 2 Richmond Stakes sponsor, Markel, our Official Fixed Odds Betting Partner Coral, John Pearce Racing, Buccellati, Jaeger-LeCoultre, World Pool and Tatler for their contribution to today’s racing.
I wish all of them and all of you an enjoyable Ladies’ Day at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE
GOODWOOD HISTORY
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.
Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

MARKEL MAGNOLIA CUP
CHARITY RACE
a brief history
The race is named after the Magnolia grandiflora that grow up the front of Goodwood House, and were first introduced to Goodwood by the 2nd Duke of Richmond in the mid-eighteenth century. The beautifully-scented Magnolia flowers were the inspiration behind the perpetual silver cup, designed by famous London silversmiths, Garrard.
Since its inception in 2011, the Magnolia Cup’s key objective has always been to raise as much money as possible for female-focused charities and, in doing so, help raise their profiles.
Through a mixture of sponsorship, tickets sales from the Regency Ball, private donations, the race has raised over £2.4 million in the years for some very worthy causes, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Winston’s Wish, Wellbeing of Women and Smart Works.
This year we are extremely proud to be supporting My Sisters’ House, a West Sussex women’s centre. They support any self-identifying woman to improve their welfare and wellbeing, reducing their risk of domestic abuse and supporting recovery. Operating across two hubs, located in the Arun District and Chichester, a presence in the communities, allows My Sisters’ House to help women reach their goals for future employment, education, or training through the Thrive Employability programme.
Our brave amateur jockeys train tirelessly for months leading up to the race, undertaking everything from early morning racing sessions to intensive fitness programmes and jockey training classes. Each rider must pass the BHA assessment before being permitted to ride in today’s five-and-a-half-furlong race.
LISOU
Goodwood Racecourse is thrilled to unveil fashion brand Lisou as the silks designer for the 13th running of the Markel Magnolia Cup. Lisou was founded by fashion designer, Rene Moshi Macdonald, in order to combine some of the vibrant colour clashes of her homeland Tanzania with Rene’s own elegant designs and inject some joy into the wardrobes of women across the UK.
Rene and the Lisou DNA lives throughout each of the bespoke designs. Drawing on both her Tanzanian heritage and London design influence, every Lisou print has been lovingly crafted and is closely connected to Rene. A former stylist, avid vintage collector and self-confessed ‘bold dresser’ herself, Rene has a unique way of combining unexpected colours and creating vibrant prints, which makes each of her pieces special and stand out.

A wind procedure in late April appeared to unlock significant improvement in SISYPHEAN as he scored in emphatic fashion at York last month. Although the handicapper has reacted with a 10lb hike in the ratings, Kevin Ryan’s colt looks capable of more and a double could be on the cards. The hat-trick seeking Midnight Gun is also high on the shortlist and he isn’t taken lightly on his stable debut. Fellow progressive rivals Blake and Aragon Castle demand closer inspection too.

Race Summary
Tropical Storm arrives on the back of a fine second in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Andrew Balding-trained colt is a potential improver upped in distance. However, stable debutant THE STRIKIN VIKING makes slightly more appeal having posted a close-up second in the Group 2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh in late June and that form rates a touch stronger. The unexposed Aparajeo is also noted after last month’s debut victory at Windsor.

The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes
John Pearce Racing is delighted to sponsor the 111th renewal of the Gordon Stakes.
s passing in 2017,
Born just after World War 1, John Pearce was schooled in England before returning to Hong Kong to join his family business, Hutchison International. Mr Pearce used his success in business to pursue a passion for breeding and racing thoroughbreds. During almost 80 years of racehorse ownership, he had a particularly successful partnership with the trainer, Geoff Wragg. Together they won the Ascot Gold Cup with Arcadian Heights (1994), before coming a close second in the Derby with Dragon Dancer (2006). Mr Pearce was a long-time fan of, and regular visitor to, ‘Glorious Goodwood’.
The sponsorship of the Gordon Stakes complements Mr Pearce’s middle-distance breeding ambitions and continues a long-standing family racing association. The trophy design mirrors that of the Pearce Memorial Cup, one of the oldest races in Hong Kong, run in memory of Mr Pearce’s father, ‘Tam’.
On Mr Pearce’s passing in 2017, his legacy established John Pearce Racing to continue his breeding and racing activities. It also created the John Pearce Foundation, a UK registered charity that supports racing related charities and other good causes.

Race Summary
Despite reservations about softer ground conditions, JAN BRUEGHEL displayed a willing attitude when completing a double in the shadows of the post at the Curragh in late June. The Galileo colt must shoulder a 3lb penalty for that Group 3 victory, but he should appreciate the extra two furlongs here and is fancied to land this contest en route to a tilt at the St Leger next month. The David Simcock-trained Sayedaty Sadaty arrives on the back of a respectable fifth in the Derby and he may put up the most resistance to the selection, ahead of Bellum Justum.

TODAY’S FEATURE
the qatar nassau stakes
The international aspect of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, which continues to attract worldwide interest, is further underlined with the running of today’s feature race, the Qatar Nassau Stakes.
Inaugurated in 1840, the race celebrates the friendship formed between the fifth Duke of Richmond and the Dutch Royal Family, the House of Orange and Nassau, two dynasties with shared values and similar aspirations, and has become a dazzling jewel in Goodwood’s racing crown.
This Group 1 event, is the most significant mid-summer race of the year for fillies and mares and more often than not provides a captivating blend of emerging stars and established champions. Run over a distance just short of ten furlongs, the Qatar Nassau Stakes was originally restricted to three-year-olds but was opened up to older horses in 1975 and has become the supreme test of high-calibre fillies and mares from different generations.
The race’s rich history features the names of many of the sport’s most celebrated fillies, including the amazing chestnut Midday who won it three times consecutively beginning in 2009. More recently Dierdre provided a notable win for her Japanese connections under an astute ride from Oisin Murphy, adding yet another colourful chapter to the history of this cherished racing tradition and affirming its international appeal.
Al Husn was something of a surprise winner last year given that the field included Classic race victors Blue Rose Cen and Nashwa, whose rider Hollie Doyle became the first female to win the Qatar Nassau Stakes when they combined to take the honours in 2022, but both were found wanting in the race for the line.
Watched on course by Shadwell principal Her Highness Sheikha Hissa bint Hamdan Al Maktoum, the Roger Varian-trained four-year-old took what was a step-up in class, producing a powerful run inside the final two furlongs for rider Jim Crowley which saw her overtake the long-time leader Above The Curve and win by half a length.

Race Summary
A runner-up over a mile in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, Opera Singer has yet to fulfil last year’s potential. This extra distance will likely bring improvement, but the same comment also applies to Coronation Stakes fourth ELMALKA. Roger Varian’s filly produced a late surge to land the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in May and will relish this extra test of stamina. Emily Upjohn will appreciate the faster ground having gone desperately close in the Pretty Polly at the Curragh, while Sparkling Plenty swept past the opposition at Chantilly to win the French Oaks in good style and is not out of place in this company.

Race Summary
EL BURHAN has proven form over today’s distance having defied a penalty to land the odds at Beverley with the minimum of fuss. He can land a nursery before moving on to better things later in the season. King Of Angels was an impressive winner over 7f at Doncaster and commands plenty of respect on his handicap debut, as does Fearless Freddy, who easily beat a subsequent winner when successful at Leicester Dukes Of Haather has been raised 6lb for winning a nursery at Chester, while Brighton Boy and Mr Chaplin are both worth noting stepping up from 6f.

Race Summary
Ryan Moore’s presence on KENDALL ROY takes the eye in a typically-open sprint. The Irish challenger showed plenty of dash to win a competitive contest over the minimum trip at Cork last week and he is taken to defy a penalty. Grandlad beat Enchanting easily enough over course and distance in June and can have a say in proceedings, while Haydock winner Cloud King is another to consider despite a 7lb rise. Noel Fox beat subsequent winner Mc Loven when successful on fast ground at Lingfield on her handicap debut and is not out of this either.

Race Summary
Aidan O’Brien won this contest with Rhododendron in 2016 before she went on to land a trio of Group 1 victories and the Ballydoyle maestro saddles a well-bred type in the shape of DREAMY. Out of a Yorkshire Oaks heroine who proved to be smart as a juvenile, she may well be another useful filly following on from the likes of Fairy Godmother and Bedtime Story. Ghaiyya, who is related to Gold Cup hero Subjectivist, and French Haven, a half-sister to Pakistan Star, are a pair of Charlie Johnston newcomers who warrant respect, along with Stellenbosch, whose two runs to date offered a fair amount of promise. totewin: Dreamy toteeachway: Ghaiyya
