Welcome to Goodwood for the opening day of the 2024 Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Excitement for the week ahead has been building here at Goodwood almost since we brought the curtain down on last year’sfestival and has been steadily gathering pace in the wider racing community throughout the season as many of the sport’sleading participants put their markers down for our principal races.
We look forward to welcoming them this week and the prospect of adding their names to the roll of honour of some of the sport’smost cherished races has once again made the Qatar Goodwood Festival acompelling prospect.
Today’sfeature race, the Group 1AlShaqab Goodwood Cup run over adistance of two miles is atrue test of stamina and courage.
Last year,Hughie Morrison’sQuickthorn and TomMarquand took acommanding lead of 16 lengths and produced what was to be one of the biggest surprises of the week.
Today we welcome Bora Aksu who earlier this year was announced as the winner of the 2024 Goodwood Talent in Fashion Award now in its fourth year and promoted in conjunction with the British Fashion Council. We look forward to seeing his three showstopping couture gowns inspired by Goodwood’sheritage modelled at the course today.
Also to look forward to is the popular annual cricket match between Lord March’sRacing XI and the Lord’sTaverners which takes place after racing on the cricket pitch at Goodwood House. All are welcome to come and watch.
We extend our thanks today to our official partners, the Qatar Racing &Equestrian Club, World Pool, The European Breeders’ Fund, Ridgeview and the festival’sOfficial Fixed Odds Betting Partner,Coral.
Iwish them and you aglorious week ahead.
The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL
GOODWOODHISTORY
Horseshave raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. Apaintingin the Goodwood Collection from that periodshows the second Duke of Richmondsurveying arace in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’spassion for the turf came from his father, the first DukeofRichmond, who rode at Newmarketaged fourteen, and his grandfather,King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood wereprivate affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, aprivate meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted achange. The meeting’ssuccessdrove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head betweenCedar, ownedbythe third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King GeorgeIV. Rebel was victorious! From then on,the Goodwood meetingtook place everysummer, becomingafirm fixturein the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the GoodwoodCup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influencedbyhis great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of theTrundle. Innovationsincluded the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinderthe skulduggery that wentonbehind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. Fromthose earlydays, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ –asthe pressdubbed the meeting –becameahighlight of the English summerseason. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and loungesuits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching apink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gownsand hats. For everyone,Goodwood became the finalfling of the season beforeall departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the HighlandsofScotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over threeconsecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later.Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days acrossthe season.Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the mostbeautifulracecourse in the worldand the placewhere many of the greatest racehorses have battleditout on the top of the South Downs.
Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in afine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

We have always been known for an ‘England in the Summer’ way of dressing, ever since King Edward VII and Lillie Langtry came racing during the 19th century, and today encourage this relaxed yet glamorous style. Bora’swork also embodies astrong sense of storytelling and I’m excited to see how the stories of Goodwood willinspirehis creations. TODAY’SFEATURE
the al shaqab goodwoodcup
First run in 1808 the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup for three-year-olds and upwards is renowned as the supreme test of stamina and courage, with the field having to master the demands of the unique undulations and elevation changes of the Downs.
The Group 1highlight of today’sprogramme is the second leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown and the third stage of the Qipco British Champions Series in the long-distance category. Its roll of honour is illuminated with the names of some of the sport’smost celebrated stayers, including the remarkable Stradivarius, who made the race his own with an astonishing four consecutive victories, beginning in 2017 and eclipsing Double Trigger’spreviously best record of three wins gained in 1995, 1997 and 1998.
The prospect of an epic battle was understandably high when Courage Mon Amiand Coltrane lined up for the 2023 renewal. Less than alength had separated these two warriors when they met in the Ascot Gold Cup alittle under six weeks earlier.
And with Courage Mon Ami’srider Frankie Dettori seeking to become the most successful jockey in the race’s200-plus year history on his Qatar Goodwood Festival swansong, the buzz around the racecourse was tangible.
Few would have given TomMarquand much more than asecond glance as he cantered Quickthorn to the two mile start, and doubtless even those who did could not have foreseen the race that was about to unfold.
An acknowledged front runner and quickly away, Quickthorn’s16/1 odds were matched in number by the lead he had established at the halfway point, and while the chasing pack clawed back ten of those 16 lengths, victory for Hughie Morrison’ssix-year-old in the colours of Lady Blyth was never in doubt in one of the most audacious displays by horse and rider in living memory at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Along history will be embellished today and another champion of the staying division suitably honoured.
