GOODWOOD RACES 2024
FRIDAY 24 MAY
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
FRIDAY 24 MAY
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Welcome to day one of the May Festival, where high-quality racing action takes centre stage.
Today’s card features the William Hill Festival Stakes, a race for older horses; it’s certainly worth taking note of the winner as they are often well worth following for the remainder of the season.
The dual Eclipse winner, Mtoto, set the standard for the William Hill Festival Stakes claiming the inaugural running in 1988. Run over one mile and two furlongs, the race is worth £60,000 and won in 2021 by Lone Eagle who went on to finish second to Hurricane Lane in the Irish Derby King Of Conquest was strong at the finish in 2023 before going on to be consistent in Group races across the season. The Height of Fashion Stakes alongside the EBF Cocked Hat Stakes move to the Saturday this season. The former is run over one mile and two furlongs for £60,000. Won by Araminta for Henry Candy last season, she went on to claim Group 3 success in France.
On the supporting card, a valuable £50,000 fillies’ handicap and a plethora of additionally competitive racing make for a brilliant day out. Enjoy live music and trips to the start on offer today. It’s a great way to go behind the scenes and get up close to the horses and jockeys.
For the first time this season, we are delighted to welcome the worthing-based Crabshack who will be curating a pop-up in the Double Trigger Restaurant over May Festival. An exciting menu of inspired fish stews, delicate crab arancini and handmade crab cakes, set the standard.
We are incredibly grateful to the sponsors of today’s racing, the European Breeders’ Fund, Racing Club and William Hill.
We wish all our owners with horses running at Goodwood today the very best of luck, and look forward to welcoming you back to Goodwood many more times throughout the year

course characteristics
Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

WILD TIGER has an attractive, unexposed profile and could give weight and a beating to these rivals. He improved for the application of cheekpieces (worn again here) when scoring comfortablyatYarmouthandlookscapableofdefyinga7lbrise.Recentwinandplacedefforts show Street Kid to be arriving in excellent form and he is the biggest threat, while Smoky Mountain can’t be dismissed dropped in both trip and class after finishing down the field at Wolverhampton.
