Family Fun
Welcome to Goodwood on the third and final day of our August Bank Holiday fixture.
Our joyful 1950’s summer holiday theme continues today featuring live music throughout the afternoon and complimentary traditional funfair rides for younger racegoers.
Taking centre stage on our seven-race programme are three valuable handicaps, including a brand new addition to our Sunday programme, the Darley Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. This race forms part of a recently launched industry initiative offering enhanced prize money to horses at the beginning of their careers, as well as assisting longer-term objectives of supporting the domestic breeding industry and ensuring more quality young horses who are bred in Britain are retained to race here.
The handicaps are shouldered by a race for amateur jockeys which remembers the late Gay Kindersley, a former notable amateur rider himself and past president of the Amateur Jockeys’ Association and the William Hill Selling Stakes. Do join us around the winner’s enclosure after the race when the winner will be offered for sale by public auction. Selling races at Goodwood have prompted lively bidding in recent years so this promises to be an enthralling moment.
Racing here at Goodwood continues next week with the first of our two autumn mid-week racedays on Tuesday 5th September, one of three remaining fixtures this season.
I hope you enjoy your afternoon at Goodwood and look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Course Characteristics
Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Race Summary
An open contest where a case can be made for plenty, however REMAADD just shades the verdict having finished runner-up at Haydock earlier this month. The son of Gleneagles is likely to appreciate this extra furlong and can continue his trainer's fine form. Others worth noting are recent Newmarket third Centurion Dream along with Wonder, who caught the eye when finishing third on his introduction despite running green throughout.

Race Summary
A really competitive renewal and you can make a case for most of the field. The most compelling argument is for INGRA TOR, who has shaped well in both starts this season and now switches to the turf for the first time in 2023. Willem Twee looks sure to improve again this year and any market move for him on the back of a 326-day break would be worth noting. Spanish Star has won over C&D four times and must be considered once again, while Capote's Dream is in fine form and could be dangerous.
Win: INGRA TOR

Race Summary
TORRE DEL ORO is best in at the weights and, with cheekpieces added for the first time, this lightly-raced colt is presented with a good opportunity to gain a first career success on turf. His latest start, when fifth in a class 4 handicap at Chester, reads well in the context of today's race and the Andrew Balding-trained three-year-old is hard to oppose. Devasboy also holds strong claims at this level, while Ramensky commands respect on his peak efforts.

Race Summary
FULFILLED finished a staying-on third over an extended 1m3f at Windsor earlier this month and a 1lb raised mark looks unlikely to stop him being in the mix here with the extra yardage to suit. He is now rated 6lb above his last winning mark, which came over the same trip at Lingfield in June, but he likely has more to offer given he won going away on that occasion. Aimeric disappointed against stiffer opposition at Newmarket last month and could bounce back in this company, while Benacre is another to consider.

Race Summary
LAST YEAR
Cherry brings the best form into the race, but she was been beaten at skinny odds on her penultimate start and is passed over in favour of the Roger Varian-trained IMPERIAL QUARTER. She was a promising fifth at Newmarket on debut and with that run under her belt, and this extra two furlongs likely to suit, she gets the vote. Any market confidence behind the smartly-bred debutant Heavens To Betsy could be significant.
Win: IMPERIAL QUARTER

Race Summary
With his main rivals The Gatekeeper and Escobar having finished down the field in a handicap at York on Thursday, everything seems to be aligned in the favour of OUZO, who appears primed to go well off just 2lb higher than his last winning mark. The Jamie Osborne-trained gelding ran well the last time he was tried over this C&D and, with the ground also likely to suit, he holds all the aces. Thunder Ball is another to monitor in the betting.

TODAY’S GOODWOOD AMATEUR RIDER CHALLENGE HANDICAP STAKES IS RUN IN MEMORY OF GAY KINDERSLEY
The Gay Kindersley Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap is run in memory of one of the most engaging figures to appear on the racecourse. As the son of Oonagh Guinness, Gay was fiercely proud of his Irish heritage. A natural raconteur born with an easy charm, he was educated at Eton College where he formed a life-long friendship with His Grace the late 10th Duke of Richmond and Gordon, and from this the link with amateur racing at Goodwood was made.
Gay was a former champion amateur jump jockey and one of the first jockeys to ride in FEGENTRI, the international association for amateur jockeys, forming lasting friendships wherever he went. He broke his back twice during his riding career but continued to ride against doctor’s orders and his last winning ride was in Belgium in 1969. After retiring from race riding, Gay became an established trainer in Berkshire. His life-long ambition was to win the Grand National and he came agonisingly close to achieving this when his part-owned Carrickbeg, ridden by his dear friend Lord Oaksey, was caught by Ayala in the final strides of the race in 1963.
On retiring from training in 1985, Gay relished his role as President of the Amateur Jockeys Association, of which he played a full and active part right up until his death in 2011 aged 80. He will always be remembered with great fondness by his many friends for his wonderful sense of humour, his engaging naivety and his utmost humility. We welcome his widow, Philippa, to Goodwood today to present the trophy in his fond memory
