DAY OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
2023 FIFTH
5 th August 2023 2
Saturday

Welcome to the fifth and final day of the 2023 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

We have a host of competitive racing ahead of us. The highlights include the Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtree Stakes and the £250,000 Coral Stewards’ Cup which formally dates back to 1840 which takes its inspiration from a tradition established some years earlier.

The Coral Stewards’ Cup is a sight to behold, with a maximum field of 28 runners charging over the brow over six furlongs and one we look forward to witnessing again this afternoon.

My thanks to Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club for their support of the Qatar Goodwood Festival and to Coral and the British European Breeders’ Fund for their support today and throughout the week.

I do hope you find time this afternoon to explore and experience some of the bars and restaurants here, as well as enjoy the live music and entertainment that is on offer. Full details of our remaining fixtures this season, including the Bank Holiday Weekend later this month, can be found on our website to help you plan your next visit.

In the meantime, I hope you have a fantastic day.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon

Goodwood History

Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection

Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Thanks for the memories Frankie

Goodwood are delighted to welcome the return of the inimitable Frankie Dettori in his final year as a professional jockey.

It was, after all, at Goodwood where it really all began for the legendary Italian rider with his first winner on Lizzy Hare as a 16-year-old apprentice in 1987 for Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani, and he soon went on to become the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a season.

Since then, he has become one of the most famous jockeys of all time, racking up dozens of Group 1 races around the world, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe a record six times, 14 Breeders’ Cup successes, four Dubai World Cup victories and the Epsom Derby twice.

He was British flat champion jockey three times in 1994, 1995 and 2004, and who can forget that afternoon at Ascot in September 1996 when he went through the card, riding all seven winners.

Will we see his famous flying dismount in the winner’s enclosure at Goodwood yet again? It has to be long odds-on that we will, and it will be a fabulous way for Frankie, who has given to many Goodwood racegoers so much pleasure over the years, to sign off the time he has spent with us since that first win on British soil 36 years ago.

Race Summary

Count Otto and Zaman Jemil both arrive with strong form claims but the ground may not suit either of them. With that in mind, preference is for MUSIC SOCIETY, who was fourth in this race two years ago on soft and he was only beaten half a length into second at Ayr a couple of starts ago. The consistent Monsieur Kodi has made the frame in both appearances since winning at Thirsk in June and is likely to go well once again, while Justcallmepete and Mamillius are others to consider.

TYSON FURY:Following its run on 23/6/2023 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed.

Race Summary

SPLENDENT was a comfortable winner over 1m4f at Newbury, scoring by four lengths, and he shaped as if this extra yardage would be no issue. He has been handed a 5lb rise, but that could prove lenient. Sweet William is an obvious danger after victories at Doncaster and, most recently, at Newbury, where he scored comfortably on his handicap debut. He is a stayer on the up and another success could help him sneak into the Ebor field. HMS President, Adjuvant, Omniscient and Post Impressionist are others to consider.

The history of Lille Langtry at Goodwood

The Lillie Langtry Stakes pays homage to the remarkable late nineteenth and early twentieth century actress, known for her beauty, charisma and love for horse racing.

Born on the island of Jersey, Lilly Langtry was a captivating and much-admired entertainer who became the mistress of the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII. Deemed not feminine to own racehorses, her horses raced under the pseudonym of ‘Mr Jersey’. She enjoyed much success, including a double at Goodwood in 1899 with Merman, winning both the Goodwood Stakes and the Goodwood Cup.

Established in 2003, the ‘Listed’ race was first known as the Gladness Stakes, named after the 1958 Goodwood Cup winner. It was renamed in celebration of Lillie Langtry and promoted to Group 3 status in 2004.

Over the past two decades, the race has produced some memorable winners. Simple Verse won the race in 2015 when ridden by Harry Bentley for trainer Ralph Beckett. She went on to Classic success in the St Leger at Doncaster and Group 1 success in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot.

Upgraded to Group 2 status in 2018, with enhanced prize money, the Lillie Langtry Stakes is for fillies and mares aged three-years-old and upwards and run over a mile and six furlongs. As a result of its upgrade in class and increase in value, the race consistently attracts a quality field and is often used as a platform for emerging stars to showcase their talent and established performers to consolidate their reputations.

The long-striding filly Enbihaar claimed victory in 2019 and 2020 before Wonderful Tonight, trained locally by David Menuisier at Coombelands, near Pulborough, stayed on gamely to etch her name on the roll of honour under William Buick in 2021. Last year’s race was won by Sea La Rosa, ridden by Tom Marquand for trainer William Haggas, who followed up her game success at Goodwood with a Group 2 win at Deauville and a Group 1 at Longchamp.

Race Summary

The Gosden’s have enjoyed plenty of success in this race over the years, most recently with the classy Enbihaar in 2019 and 2020, and they are expected to lift this prestigious prize once again with FREE WIND. Having landed the Middleton on her return to action, she was far from disgraced when taking on the boys in the Hardwicke. She sets a lofty standard back against her own sex and can repel the likely challenge of River Of Stars. Luisa Casati ought to relish ground conditions and it would be folly to write her off, while Time Lock is also noted now upped in distance.

Today’s Feature Coral Stewards’ Cup

One of the oldest and most competitive races of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, the Coral Stewards’ Cup is the headline handicap of the week. A fascinating contest, it is not a race for the feint-hearted with up to twenty eight of the fastest horses in training thundering with lightning speed down Goodwood’s straight six furlongs course in a pulsating race to the line.

The draw for each horse’s position in the starting stalls has become a contentious issue in recent years and today it is a stage-managed feature of the meeting held in public view two days prior to the running of the race.

A fiercely contested event, the Stewards’ Cup has a rich heritage with the likes of Lonchsong, who won the race in 1992, Danetime (1997), Borderslescott, who clinched a notable victory in 2006 before going on to secure multiple Group 1 triumphs, and Hoof It (2011) all making their mark.

Former jockey turned trainer, Richard Hughes, boasts an impressive record in the modern era, winning the race four times between 1995 and 2014. Magical Memory gave Frankie Dettori a first Stewards’ Cup win in 2015, ticking off one of the few major British races to have thus far eluded him. A second victory was not long in coming and two years later the charismatic Italian was back in the winner’s enclosure this time aboard Lancelot Du Lac.

In 2018, Brighton-born Jason Watson, teamed up with top-weight Gifted Master for Hugo Palmer to score en-route to winning the 2019 champion apprentice title. Khaadem and Summerghand added their names to the distinguished roll of honour in 2019 and 2020 respectively before Commanche Falls, ridden by Connor Beasley, became the sixth back-to-back winner last year following his success twelve months earlier.

A renowned and much cherished tradition of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, the Coral Stewards’ Cup has become an eagerly anticipated contest, and with a prize money fund of £250,000, we can look forward to an exhilarating and memorable renewal.

Race Summary

ORAZIO looked a sprinter going places earlier in the season with victories at Newmarket and Ascot before running creditably in the Wokingham at the Royal meeting. The ground might have been on the faster side for him on that occasion and the four-year-old doesn’t appear to have reached the ceiling of his potential. Apollo One finished second in the aforementioned contest and is expected to be in the mix once again, while others for the shortlist in a typically competitive renewal include Badri, Summerghand and Bielsa.

Race Summary

NEW BUSINESS raced keenly when attempting to make all at Sandown and faded into fourth, with Scholarship a couple of positions behind. The son of Sea The Stars has been dropped 1lb and is only having his fifth career run so if he can settle better, he ought to go close. Thunder Ball was a place behind Urban Sprawl when fourth in the Britannia at Royal Ascot but can reverse that form, with the latter having something to prove following an underwhelming Newmarket display subsequently.

Race Summary

Individualism is a half-brother to top stayers Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley, but displayed enough pace to bustle up a previous winner over this trip at Ayr. Devil’s Point and Empire Of Art also showed enough on debut to warrant an interest, but Andrew Balding has won the last two renewals of this so a chance is taken on CELTIC WARRIOR, who cost 125,000gns and is preferred to stablemate Royal Supremacy. Stratocracy looks the pick from an interesting Richard Hannon team. Like Charlie Hills’ newcomer Miletus, he has a Champagne Stakes entry.

Race Summary

A fairly open contest in which preference is for ONE STEP BEYOND. The six-year-old recorded his best turf run to date when registering a staying-on success over a mile at Ascot last month. He is now rated 6lb higher for that win, but that may not be enough to halt his progression with the step up in trip expected to suit. Mostawaa arrives seeking a four-timer and can give the selection plenty to think about, while Liberty Lane is another with claims.
