OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
2023 FOURTH DAY
4 th August 2023 2
Friday

Welcome to the fourth day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Today begins with a very special charity race, the Markel Magnolia Cup, which since its inception in 2011 has grown to become a prominent and cherished feature of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

The funds it raises for female-focused charities is nothing short of remarkable and I’m grateful to all those who support the race, not least the 12 inspirational women who will be taking part today.

Speed will be of the essence in our feature race this afternoon the King George Qatar Stakes, a race in which Jim Crowley and the blistering Battaash set the five furlongs course record twice during their four-year domination of the Group 2 contest from 2017.

The King George Qatar Stakes is supported by a hugely competitive handicap in the Coral Golden Mile and the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes and L’Ormarins King’s Plate Glorious Stakes, which both enjoy Group 3 status. Also, this afternoon we will be revealing the winner of the L’Ormarins style competition, which is as keenly contested as the action on the track and I wish you the very best of luck if you are taking part.

I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and thank you for choosing to spend it at Goodwood.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon

Goodwood History

Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection

Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Refraction, winner of the Oaks in 1845, was one of eleven racehorses owned by the fifth Duke of Richmond, and part of his zenith era as an owner.

Roncesvalles was one of the fifth Duke of Richmond’s most successful racehorses, winning six races between 1818 and 1821.

Course Characteristics

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Markel Magnolia Cup Charity Race

A Brief History

Now in its twelfth year, the very special Markel Magnolia Cup Charity Race will be staged on Friday 4 August.

The race is named after the Magnolia grandiflora that grow up the front of Goodwood House, and were first introduced to Goodwood by the 2nd Duke of Richmond in the mid-eighteenth century. The beautifully-scented Magnolia flowers were the inspiration behind the perpetual silver cup, designed by famous London silversmiths, Garrard.

Since its inception in 2011, the Magnolia Cup’s key objective has always been to raise as much money as possible for female-focused charities and, in doing so, help raise their profiles. Through a mixture of sponsorship, tickets sales from the Regency Ball, private donations, the race has raised over £2.1 million in the last nine years for some very worthy causes, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Winston’s Wish, Wellbeing of Women and Smart Works.

This year we are extremely proud to be supporting Education Above All’s (EEA) Educate A Child programme. All net proceeds will go to a project in Malawi that provides education and support for children most at-risk of dropping out of primary education through a joint project between Education Above All and CAMFED. The project aims to empower thousands of girls enabling them to overcome barriers to accessing and remaining in school. At the centre of the project is mentorship and local leadership allowing individuals to benefit from quality primary education inclusive of sexual health education, life skills, and well-being sessions, intensive out-of-school support for those facing the most pressure to drop out, and psychosocial support.

Our brave amateur jockeys train tirelessly for months leading up to the race, undertaking everything from early morning racing sessions to intensive fitness programmes and jockey training classes. Each rider must pass the BHA assessment before being permitted to ride in today’s five-and-a-half-furlong race.

Alice Temperley

Goodwood racecourse is thrilled to unveil this year’s beautiful Markel Magnolia Cup jockey silks, which have been created by renowned British fashion designer Alice Temperley.

Carefully selected from the Temperley archive, which spans over 20 years of fashion design, the silks incorporate some of Temperley’s most iconic prints. Each motif is hand painted and engineered to the female form, coming in multiple striking colourways that have been chosen in order to individually identify each jockey on the racecourse. A personal favourite, the Avril Print draws inspiration from the psychedelic colour palette of the late Sixties and was originally designed during lockdown – when Alice was filled with nostalgia for dancing in a field and a curiosity for what would come next! Other celebrated prints that feature on the silks draw inspiration from nature, from Agate Crystals to Animal Print – a Temperley signature look.

Alice Temperley, founder and designer of fashion label Temperley London commented; “I am thrilled to play a part in the Markel Magnolia Cup, supporting such a wonderful initiative – Education Above All. One of my great loves is horses, so it seems fitting to design bespoke Temperley silks to empower the female jockeys.”

Race Summary

A competitive renewal which sees several intriguing contenders lining up, including 2021 winner Calling The Wind. He arrives here following a career-best effort when taking the Northumberland Plate and cannot be dismissed off 4lb higher. That being said, TEMPORIZE was only narrowly denied when securing a staying-on second over 2m at Ascot last month and, with the potential for more to come, is fancied to get the better of Irish raider Tronador. Hydroplane and Emiyn appeal most of the remainder.

RACE TWO

Race Summary

Connections of NOSTRUM must have been very tempted by the Sussex Stakes, but the decision to keep their sights lower for the time being should be rewarded. A third in last year’s Dewhurst remains his sole defeat and the way he powered clear of his rivals on his Newmarket comeback strongly suggested that he is a Group 1 winner in waiting. Galeron emerged from a couple of Classics with credit, while Docklands continued on his upward curve when landing the Britannia. Epictetus and Knight are on retrieval missions.

Race Summary

Blue For You was runner-up to stable companion Orbaan in last year’s renewal and the five-year-old arrives 3lb well-in under a penalty following a comfortable success at York. Awaal warrants plenty of consideration based on his efforts in big-field handicaps and the return to softer ground, along with first-time cheekpieces, will benefit him, but the vote goes to LATTAM. William Haggas’ four-year-old has plenty in his favour and may still have further improvement to come following his victories at the Curragh and Newcastle so far this term.

Thanks for the memories Frankie

Goodwood are delighted to welcome the return of the inimitable Frankie Dettori in his final year as a professional jockey.

It was, after all, at Goodwood where it really all began for the legendary Italian rider with his first winner on Lizzy Hare as a 16-year-old apprentice in 1987 for Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani, and he soon went on to become the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a season.

Since then, he has become one of the most famous jockeys of all time, racking up dozens of Group 1 races around the world, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe a record six times, 14 Breeders’ Cup successes, four Dubai World Cup victories and the Epsom Derby twice.

He was British flat champion jockey three times in 1994, 1995 and 2004, and who can forget that afternoon at Ascot in September 1996 when he went through the card, riding all seven winners.

Will we see his famous flying dismount in the winner’s enclosure at Goodwood yet again? It has to be long odds-on that we will, and it will be a fabulous way for Frankie, who has given to many Goodwood racegoers so much pleasure over the years, to sign off the time he has spent with us since that first win on British soil 36 years ago.

Today’s Feature

King George Qatar Stakes

A hotly contested five furlongs event for three-year-olds and upwards, the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes is Goodwood’s premier race for sprinters and one of the highlights of the British racing calendar.

Sir Gordon Richards set a likely never-to-be-beaten record of riding the winner in six consecutive seasons beginning in 1947, but the legendary Lester Piggott is the race’s most successful jockey with an amazing nine wins, the last of which was Anita’s Prince in 1984.

The brilliant mare Lochsong beat Paris House in a thrilling renewal in 1993 under Frankie Dettori. She returned twelve months later to register a second success and become one of only half a dozen horses to win the race twice.

Three-year-olds have the best record in the race since the war, with more than 30 winners coming from that age group, while winning favourites have proved a reliable statistic for those betting on the outcome.

The 2009 renewal was particularly strong with dual Group 1 winner Kingsgate Native beating subsequent Prix de l’Abbaye winner Total Gallery.

Ortensia became the first Australian-trained horse to win a race at Goodwood in 2012 and underlined her immense talent the following month with a subsequent success in the Nunthorpe which is often targeted by the leading players in the King George Qatar Stakes.

Take Cover left an indelible mark on the race with wins in 2014 and 2016 before the remarkable Battaash arrived the following year to run up a sequence of four consecutive wins. The Charlie Hills-trained gelding was an automatic favourite to make it five in a row in 2021 but could finish only seventh behind the French trained mare Suesa on ground thought to be slower than he would have preferred.

Hills returned to win the race yet again last year with Khaadem, who arrived with some useful form having won the Stewards’ Cup two years previously, but the six-year-old failed in his bid to join Lochsong, Ortensia and stablemate Battaash as the only horses in the modern era to win the King George Qatar Stakes and the Nunthorpe in the same season.

Race Summary

HIGHFIELD PRINCESS arrives here on the back of three outstanding efforts in defeat this season and the switch back to Group 2 company may see the six-year-old return to winning ways. Equilateral has also been running well this season and could prove to be the main threat to the selection, although the progressive Equality should not be underestimated. Those looking for an each-way alternative should consider White Lavender, who is likely to have conditions in her favour.

Race Summary

HAMISH was taken out of last weekend’s King George on account of the ground, but he loves to get his toe in and this is a more suitable assignment for him anyway. William Haggas’ grand servant numbered Teumessias Fox among his victims when lifting the Silver Cup at York and he has won five times at this level already. Mimikyu has shown some wayward tendencies so cheekpieces could help harness her undoubted ability Candleford, a stablemate of the selection, is better than he showed on his reappearance here.

Jane Chapple-Hyam’s runner was a good second over 6f at Windsor last time where he was beaten just three quarters of a length. Off the same mark, he appears primed to offer another bold bid. Starlust arrives here seeking a hat-trick and this opening mark of 89 doesn’t appear out of his reach, while Loaded Gun should also be thereabouts.

Race Summary

True Legend registered his third win of the year at Salisbury last weekend, but he has a penalty to contend with in a stronger race against some unexposed opponents. BALANCE PLAY had Perfect Play behind him when third on Derby day at Epsom and then got off the mark when justifying favouritism at Chester. He is proven with give underfoot, as is Intricacy, who had something up his sleeve at Ascot and is a lively danger. Kintaro is bred to stay so could represent each-way value on his handicap bow.
