2023
THIRD DAY
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Thursday 3 rd August 2023 2
Welcome to Ladies’ Day at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Appropriately, the first of today’s eight races celebrates one of the greatest
female equines in Turf history, the remarkable Hungarian-bred mare, Kincsem. Undefeated in all 54 of her races in the late 19th century, she travelled Europe to capture some of the sport’s grandest prizes including the 1878 Goodwood Cup, her sole run on British soil.
Alongside the stunning fashion that will be on display today is a compelling programme of top-quality racing highlighted by the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, a ten furlongs contest restricted to fillies and mares and inaugurated in 1840 to mark the close association between the fifth Duke of Richmond with the Dutch Royal family
Its roster of recognition includes the supreme champion fillies Sceptre and Pretty Polly in the early twentieth century and more recently Roussalka, Ouija Board and Midday who won it a record three times.
In almost poetic style Hollie Doyle took the Ladies’ Day theme to a new level last year with a scintillating last to first performance aboard Nashwa, a daughter of the dual Qatar Sussex Stakes hero Frankel, to become the first female rider to capture the Group 1 contest.
The Group 2 Markel Richmond Stakes and the Group 3 John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes add further quality to a varied programme of events, and we are also delighted to welcome Buccellati as the Official Jewellery Partner of Goodwood Racecourse. Our grateful thanks are also due to Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, Coral, World Pool, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Tatler and the British European Breeders’ Fund for their support of today’s races.
We hope you have a fabulous day and take with you many happy memories of the time you spent at Goodwood.

Goodwood History
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Course Characteristics
Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Thanks for the memories Frankie
Goodwood are delighted to welcome the return of the inimitable Frankie Dettori in his final year as a professional jockey.
It was, after all, at Goodwood where it really all began for the legendary Italian rider with his first winner on Lizzy Hare as a 16-year-old apprentice in 1987 for Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani, and he soon went on to become the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a season.
Since then, he has become one of the most famous jockeys of all time, racking up dozens of Group 1 races around the world, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe a record six times, 14 Breeders’ Cup successes, four Dubai World Cup victories and the Epsom Derby twice.
He was British flat champion jockey three times in 1994, 1995 and 2004, and who can forget that afternoon at Ascot in September 1996 when he went through the card, riding all seven winners.
Will we see his famous flying dismount in the winner’s enclosure at Goodwood yet again? It has to be long odds-on that we will, and it will be a fabulous way for Frankie, who has given to many Goodwood racegoers so much pleasure over the years, to sign off the time he has spent with us since that first win on British soil 36 years ago.

Race Summary
PERFUSE was sent off favourite for the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot on the back of two impressive displays at Nottingham and Doncaster and, although he only finished fifth on that occasion, this drop in trip could see him get back to winning ways. The unexposed pair Garden Route and Alsakib come into this with similar profiles having won novice events on their latest starts. Both are now having their first taste in handicap company, so they warrant serious consideration.
Win: PERFUSE Danger: Garden Route
An outright favourite has only won one of the last 10 runnings and given Ryan Moore is overbacked in the World Pool and rides the favourite, there’s value to be found in taking him on. The stats point to doing that with trainer Andrew Balding, who has a 22% strike rate with 3yo’s at Goodwood in the last 5 years to a level stakes profit of £23.90. He saddles Alsakib, who has won his last two starts and looks a cracking bet. BET TYPE: Win SELECTION: Alsakib

Race Summary
Expensive breeze-up purchase VANDEEK overcame a sluggish start to justify favouritism on his Nottingham introduction, and the third ran well here earlier in the week. His proven ability on rain-affected ground gets him the nod ahead of Sketch, who couldn’t have been more impressive on his Newbury debut. Toca Madera did well to make the frame in the July Stakes, while Asadna has yet to live up to his Ripon demolition job but can’t be written off just yet.

In contrast to the first race, the Richmond Stakes has been one for the favourites with five of the last nine market leaders winning. After a couple of market leaders were declared non-runners, that is now good news if you fancy Vandeek, who goes for Andrea Atzeni and Simon and Ed Crisford. Don’t just rest on the favourite though, as it might be wise to side for the Trifecta here as it normally overpays nicely. Include Vandeek alongside last time out winners, Sketch and Ballymount Boy.

The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes
John Pearce Racing is delighted to sponsor the 111th renewal of the Gordon Stakes.
Born just after World War 1, John Pearce was schooled in England before returning to Hong Kong to join his family business, Hutchison International. Mr Pearce used his success in business to pursue a passion for breeding and racing thoroughbreds. During almost 80 years of racehorse ownership, he had a particularly successful partnership with the trainer, Geoff Wragg. Together they won the Ascot Gold Cup with Arcadian Heights (1994), before coming a close second in the Derby with Dragon Dancer (2006). Mr Pearce was a long-time fan of, and regular visitor to, ‘Glorious Goodwood’.
The sponsorship of the Gordon Stakes complements Mr Pearce’s middle-distance breeding ambitions and continues a long-standing family racing association. The trophy design mirrors that of the Pearce Memorial Cup, one of the oldest races in Hong Kong, run in memory of Mr Pearce’s father, ‘Tam’.
On Mr Pearce’s passing in 2017, his legacy established John Pearce Racing to continue his breeding and racing activities. It also created the John Pearce Foundation, a UK registered charity that supports racing related charities and other good causes.

Race Summary
This is a higher calibre of race than the Listed contest won by CHESSPIECE at Hamilton, but his previous third in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot was a solid statement of intent and he is a highly appealing candidate. The son of Nathaniel has already proven that stamina is his forte and, with ground conditions likely to suit, a big run is expected. Espionage commands respect as Aidan O’Brien’s sole representative, while Artistic Star has posted high-class form in defeat and is dangerous to underestimate.

The Qatar Nassau Stakes
The Qatar Nassau Stakes is a Group 1 event with a prize fund of £600,000. It is the most significant mid-summer race of the year for fillies and mares and more often than not provides a captivating blend of emerging stars and established champions.
Run over a distance just short of ten furlongs, it was originally restricted to three-year-olds but was opened up to older horses in 1975 and has become the supreme test of high-calibre fillies and mares from different generations.
The globe-trotting, multiple Group 1 winner Ouija Board etched her name on the Nassau Stakes elite roll of honour in 2006, carrying Lord Derby’s distinctive black with white cap colours.
Sir Henry’s record eight winners includes the amazing chestnut filly Midday who carved herself a slice of racing history by becoming the first horse to win the race three times in consecutive years from 2009.
Newmarket trainer John Gosden, who first tasted Nassau Stakes glory with Ryafan in 1997, produced three winners in a row beginning with The Fugue in 2012 swiftly followed by stablemates Winsili and Sultanina.
Irish champion trainer Aidan O’Brien registered back-to-back wins in the race as Winter ran out a comfortable winner under the guidance of Ryan Moore in 2017, following Minding’s success, partnered by the same rider, the previous year, while global powerhouse Godolphin registered a second success in the Nassau Stakes in 2018, with Epsom Oaks runner-up Wild Illusion.
Twelve months later Deirdre provided a notable win for her Japanese connections under an astute ride from Oisin Murphy, adding yet another colourful chapter to the history of this cherished racing tradition and affirming its international appeal.
Lady Bowthorpe was an emotional winner in 2021, ending a 27-year Group 1 drought for trainer William Jarvis, and there was plenty of sentiment last year when Hollie Doyle teamed up with the John and Thady Gosden-trained Nashwa to become the first female rider to win the race.

Race Summary
Reigning champion Nashwa warmed up for the defence of her crown by bouncing back to form in the Falmouth, justifying the decision to supplement her and proving she has the speed for a mile. In BLUE ROSE CEN, though, she comes up against an exceptional French filly who backed up her cosy Poule d’Essai des Pouliches success when trouncing Never Ending Story to complete a Classic double in the Prix de Diane. Al Husn claimed the scalp of a probably below-par Nashwa at Newcastle but still warrants consideration, while Above The Curve will like the ground.

Nashwa won this last year with Hollie Doyle and the pair look well set to follow up after bouncing back to form in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time. With the Hollie factor to consider, there’ll be no great value on offer, so consider the Exacta and take the French raider in Blue Rose Cen to follow home last year’s winner.

Having belied odds of 40-1 to strike on her debut, the daughter of Harzand was pitched immediately into Group company. She came up well short in the Albany, but an opening mark of 79 could underestimate her. Balon D’or is interesting despite the burden of top weight, while others to note include Phone Tag, Lincoln Legacy and Gray’s Inn, who is a whopping 17lb well-in compared to her revised rating.
Win: SARAKANA
Danger: Balon D’or
14 go to post for this handicap and the Swinger looks a good bet to have here, where you need two of your selections to be placed in the top three. That paid £39.25 to a £1 stake for having 1st and 3rd last year, so be sure to perm up. Hannon and Johnston have won six of the last 10 runnings, so although Richard Jr and Charlie hold the reins these days they can keep the trend going. That means including Macanudo and Lincoln Legacy in your perm, but also side with Michael Owen’s Balon D’Or who makes his handicap debut after running in Listed and Group company the last twice.
BET TYPE: Swinger SELECTIONS: Macanudo, Lincoln Legacy, Balon D’Or

Race Summary
NOVUS appears right at home at Goodwood, winning here in May and then going very close on the first day of this meeting. She is two from two on soft ground and is preferred to Roarin’ Success, who is on a hat-trick after ending her juvenile campaign with a Wolverhampton triumph and picking up where she left off at Ascot. The returning Sea Eagle must enter calculations on his first run in a handicap, while others to note include Cancan In The Rain, Merry Minister and Alpha Crucis.
Win: NOVUS Danger: Roarin’ Success
Again it’s time to play the Exotics and with 20 runners, the Swinger looks to be the bet. Novus ran on well for second last time so looks capable of winning off an unchanged mark, while Cancan In The Rain looked to win with something still to spare last time and has only got up 2lb. The hat-trick seeking Roarin’ Success looks worth including also, after scoring over this trip last time out

Get Jiggy With It made a short-priced favourite with previous experience pull out all the stops at Newmarket and a maiden looks a formality. However, the form of ORNELLAIA’s debut third there a couple of days earlier was given a massive boost when the winner ran away with the Princess Margaret at Ascot last weekend, and Dominic Ffrench Davis’ filly gets the nod. Classical Song was a €420,000 breeze-up purchase and has Ryan Moore on top, while Imperial Express is a half-sister to Ebro River so is another newcomer to note.
Win: ORNELLAIA Danger: Get Jiggy With It
The Exacta has smashed the bookies forecast in the last two runnings of this race, so we’ll try and land the 1-2 here again, albeit with the Quinella. Charlie Johnston is 2 from 4 with his 2yo’s at Goodwood and runs a newcomer here in True Wisdom, so take a chance on him. Andrew Balding is another that has a good record so side with Imperial Express, while Paul and Oliver Cole have a 23% strike rate with 2yo’s at Goodwood, meaning Eleftheria is worth an inclusion in your perm.

Race Summary
This is fiercely competitive and hardly any can confidently be ruled out. The likes of Rogue Spirit, Desert Games and The Thames Boatman are all open to improvement now they are tried with headgear applied and can do their bit to ensure this is a fast and furious affair - a scenario which will ideally suit DEMOCRACY DILEMMA, a pacey individual who seems to be thriving on being kept busy. Hollie Doyle keeps the partnership intact after guiding him to victory twice already this season and further success is distinctly possible.
Win: DEMOCRACY DILEMMA Danger: Rogue Spirit
The Trifecta normally laughs at the Trifecta with a dividend well over £1,000 to a £1 stake in this, so that’s the way to go. Andrew Balding’s Estate is one you can rely on and after going up 2lb for winning last time, Harry Davies’ 3lb claim puts him well in. Jason Hart has a cracking record on the straight course so Jm Jungle is worth considering, as is impressive distance winner Democracy Dilemma who looks well-supported here.
