2023
SECOND DAY
OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Wednesday 2 nd August 2023 2
Welcome to day two of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
With a prize money fund of almost £1.5 million on offer, today’s eight-race card is the richest of the five-day Festival and boasts a programme that provides a plethora of career defining opportunities for a wide range of high-class horses from juveniles seeking to establish Group race credentials in the Molecomb Stakes to some of the best milers in training competing for a share of one million pounds in the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes.
Before we turn our attention to the Thoroughbreds, we will be welcoming some of the world’s most accomplished Pure Bred Arabians in the richest race of its kind ever staged in the UK, the £400,000 Group Qatar International Stakes. It was won last year by the Thomas Fourcy-trained Lady Princess, who went on to further distinguish herself in the Qatar Arabian Derby at Longchamp a couple of months or so later.
Lady Princess initiated a lucrative double on the day for jockey Jim Crowley who later that afternoon was to partner the brilliant Baaeed to Qatar Sussex Stakes glory, who joins an illustrious roll of honour that features the names of some of the best-known horses in modern racing history from Brigadier Gerrard in the early 1970’s through to Giants Causeway at the turn of the millennium, the mighty Frankel and Toronado and Lightning Spear who brought particular joy to the Festival’s title sponsor.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, along with our sincere thanks to Whispering Angel, the British European Breeders’ Fund, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Coral and World Pool for their generous contributions to today’s programme.
I hope you take home many wonderful memories of a great day’s racing.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon
Goodwood History
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Thanks for the memories Frankie
Goodwood are delighted to welcome the return of the inimitable Frankie Dettori in his final year as a professional jockey.
It was, after all, at Goodwood where it really all began for the legendary Italian rider with his first winner on Lizzy Hare as a 16-year-old apprentice in 1987 for Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani, and he soon went on to become the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a season.
Since then, he has become one of the most famous jockeys of all time, racking up dozens of Group 1 races around the world, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe a record six times, 14 Breeders’ Cup successes, four Dubai World Cup victories and the Epsom Derby twice.
He was British flat champion jockey three times in 1994, 1995 and 2004, and who can forget that afternoon at Ascot in September 1996 when he went through the card, riding all seven winners.
Will we see his famous flying dismount in the winner’s enclosure at Goodwood yet again? It has to be long odds-on that we will, and it will be a fabulous way for Frankie, who has given to many Goodwood racegoers so much pleasure over the years, to sign off the time he has spent with us since that first win on British soil 36 years ago.

BETTING FORECAST 3-1 Fav Al Ghadeer (FR), 7-2 Moshrif (FR), 5-1 Samlla (FR), 11-2 First Classs (US), 6-1 AJS Saaeq (QA), 13-2 Ekleel Athbah (FR), 8-1 Jabalah (FR), 12-1 Sahab (FR)
Race Summary
A high quality renewal with five of the eight being winners of some of the world’s best Group 1PA races. Al Ghadeer is from the first crop of this race’s most impressive winner and is the highest rated of his generation. Despite his brilliance in his own age group, no four year old has won this and with the race run in August, the weight for age allowance is less this year. Value could be found with one of his elders and with every winner rated 118 or more, three fit the stats. Drying ground would help First Classs, but all bar one winner had the benefit of a recent run, whilst Samlla has lacked sparkle, both on his comeback and in his previous run in Saudi. MOSHRIF is the tentative pick, proven at the trip and on easy ground, his jockey also has one of the best records in the race and won this on his half brother in 2018 for the same trainer.

Race Summary
AMLETO proved a ready winner of a Chester maiden in May and, with the second subsequently going close in handicap company, William Haggas’ gelding could be well treated debuting in this sphere. Westerton has shaped as if he would be suited by this stiffer test and isn’t taken lightly. The son of Belardo could emerge as the chief threat to the selection, ahead of Struth and Tagabawa, who have both performed with credit at this level.

Amleto looked pretty good when winning in soft ground at Chester so play the Swinger here and start your perm with him given the similar conditions. Struth looks the type to be cherry ripe for this given he’s trained by Charlie Johnston, and off the same mark as a 1¾ length defeat last time, he can be in the picture. So can French Invasion, another Johnston runner who makes his turf debut in the hands of Frankie Dettori.

Race Summary
This could go the way of the hat-trick seeking WHITE MOONLIGHT, who steps up in grade following a comfortable success in Listed company on the all-weather last month. With the potential of more to come, she is fancied to get the better of Fast Response, who finished seven and a quarter lengths behind the selection at Musselburgh on her penultimate outing. Others of interest include Jumbly and Matilda Picotte, who both drop in grade from their latest runs.
Win: WHITE MOONLIGHT Danger: Fast Response
The favourite has won four of the last six runnings of this race, so play the Exacta and perm up around Fast Response and Jumbly, who are battling out at the top of the betting. Ryan Moore tends to be overbacked in the World Pool, so Clifford Lee’s mount is the one that could bring the value. The in-form White Moonlight is another to have on side.

RACE THREE
Race Summary
Big Evs was an imposing winner of the Windsor Castle in June and it’s difficult to envisage him being far away, but preference is for KYLIAN. A beaten favourite on his first two starts, the penny appeared to drop at Newcastle and he took another significant step forward when bolting up in the Dragon Stakes at Sandown. Purosangue weakened late on in the July Stakes at Newmarket but, down in both trip and grade, he’s likely to go well. Baheer and Shagraan are far from out of this either.
Win: KYLIAN Danger: Big Evs
Hong Kong punters latch on to big name jockeys in the World Pool, so you might find some value going against the Ryan Moore-ridden favourite here. Big Evs was a clear winner of the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot and has the potential to keep improving. Jason Hart has an excellent record at Goodwood and can add another to his collection.

The Qatar Sussex Stakes
The long-acknowledged flagship event of what is affectionately known as Glorious Goodwood, the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is among the most eagerly anticipated races of the season of summer racing.
One of the most valuable all-aged races in Europe, with a prize money fund of £1 million, it has become Goodwood’s race of champions with a reputation of bringing together some of the most outstanding milers in training year on year.
Most of the best milers in recent years feature on the race’s distinguished roll of honour - Warning (1988), Zilzal (1989), Aljabr, (1999), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Canford Cliffs (2010).
Then came Frankel, who went on to create a piece of Goodwood racing history by becoming the first horse to win the Sussex Stakes for a second time the following year and eventually retired unbeaten in 14 races.
Toronado, owned by His Excellency Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani a member of the Qatari Royal Family, overturned the favourite Dawn Approach in a thrilling renewal of this Group 1 contest in 2013, but any chance of a similar upset the following year was never on with Kingman winning in untroubled fashion.
There was a surprise result in 2017 when Here Comes When fended off the challenge of the hot favourite Ribchester. Twelve months later Lightning Spear, owned by Qatar Racing, and ridden by Oisin Murphy, took the honours.
Murphy enjoyed the thrill of winning the race again when Alcohol Free upset a gamble on Poetic Flare in 2021. The filly returned for another crack at the Sussex Stakes last year but could finish only third behind the brilliant Baaeed.
The red-hot favourite, Baaeed never looked like losing his previously unbeaten record of eight wins, and won with some ease. He was to have two more races before retiring to stud.

Race Summary
PADDINGTON has improved markedly this year as he started off in a Naas handicap off 97. A couple of starts later he was winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh and the Group 1 wins have just kept on coming, as he was awesome in the St James’s Palace Stakes before showing his versatility to beat Emily Upjohn over 10 furlongs in the Coral-Eclipse. It is very difficult to get away from Aidan O’Brien’s son of Siyouni and he’s taken to have too much class for Queen Anne Stakes second Inspiral lining up in receipt of 4lb from the daughter of Frankel. Chindit might have a squeak if he can come back to his Lockinge form.

Race Summary
TROPICAL ISLAND justified strong market support when making a winning debut at Ripon 11 days ago and, open to any amount of improvement, she could take this step up in class in her stride. Dapperling must enter calculations following her massive effort when second in the Weatherbys Super Sprint, while Flora Of Bermuda emerged with plenty of credit to finish first home on the far side in the Queen Mary to suggest there could be more to come.
Win: TROPICAL ISLAND Danger: Dapperling
The favourite has won the last two runnings of this race, albeit at 2/1 or less, so this looks a lot more competitive unless there’s a late gamble. The 2yo’s often progress in different stages, so the Swinger could be the way to go, where you need two of your selections to be placed in the top three to win. Perm up a few, starting with Flora Of Bermuda and Indispensable who’s trainers have excellent records in 2yo races at Goodwood, then pick Harvanna and Tropical Island.

Race Summary
In a wide-open event marginal preference is for the highly-progressive LA ISLA MUJERES, who created a big impression when accounting for a decent field by seven lengths at Salisbury last time. An 11lb rise for that success will make her life tougher here, but the daughter of Lope De Vega may well defy that on her way to stakes company. Decoration and Therapist also merit plenty of respect following some encouraging placed efforts on their most recent starts. Others to note are Sirona, Queen Regent and Value Added.
Win: LA ISLA MUJERES Danger: Decoration
Horses drawn five or six have won four of the last seven renewals of this race, so include the pair in another Swinger bet and it could return a nice dividend. In These Shoes is in five for the trusty Goodwood combo of Johnston and Fanning, while Chips And Rice is drawn six and arrives in good form after winning well at Brighton last time.

Race Summary
THUNDER BALL ran a blinder to finish fourth in the Britannia at Royal Ascot, having been raised a 16lb for his Newbury novice success. The Night Of Thunder gelding has gone up a further 3lb for that latest effort, but he is still improving and could have further progress in his locker. Paul & Oliver Cole’s charge receives a tentative vote in a wide-open contest, while Rhoscolyn, who bounced back to form with a fair second at Beverley nine days ago, can give him plenty to think about. Isla Kai, Darkness, Urban Sprawl and Classic are just a few others to consider

RACE SEVEN
The Trifecta paid over £3,300 in last year’s race versus a £1,200 tricast with the bookies, and it was even better in 2021 when the Trifecta hit £4,300 versus a £1,800 tricast. That suggests the 1-2-3 in the World Pool is the way to go, and start your perm with Classic as trainer Richard Hannon has won three of the last five runnings. The Johnston’s Love De Vega is down 2lb and has Frankie booked, Rhoscolyn has never been out the three in three attempts over 7f at Goodwood, while Isla Kai is back to his last winning mark.
