Family Race Day

Welcome to Family Race Day, a day on the Downs that truly offers something for everyone.

Younger racegoers will find a host of free entertainment from fairground rides to fascinating magic tricks and there are three opportunities to get even closer to the action with our hosted trips to the start. There, after a short mini-bus ride, you can experience the thrill and excitement of seeing the horses burst from the starting stalls and thunder down the track from close quarters.

Our seven-race programme is highlighted by the Weatherbys / British EBF Agnes Keyser Stakes and the William Hill Tapster Stakes, a race with a roll of honour that includes subsequent Group winners including Trueshan, victorious in 2020 before returning to Goodwood the following year to partner Hollie Doyle to Group 1 glory in the Qatar Goodwood Cup.

We will be back next week for the second of our Three Friday Nights when Felix Da Housecat will be live after racing on Friday 16 June. Tickets are still available for this unmissable night of racing and DJs.

My thanks go to today’s race sponsors William Hill, Weatherbys, the British European Breeders’ Fund and Rod Gaskin for their continued support.

I wish you all a pleasant afternoon.

Race Summary

A competitive opener where it's hard to rule anything out and it may pay to take a punt on AL RUFAA off a falling mark Charlie Fellowes' gelding comes with risks attached having not won for almost three years, but the six-year-old is now 10lb below his last winning mark and offered more encouragement at Chester last time. Mister Bluebird arrives in good form and is feared most, ahead of C&D winner La Maquina, who finished a respectable fourth at York recently.

PROFITABLE DREAMS had Vidi Vici (fifth) and Birkie Boy (eighth) well held when scoring by a nose at Chepstow, as she took a good step forward from her first outing. The Weatherbys/British EBF Agnes Keyser Fillies’ Stakes

Previously staged as the Abingdon Stakes at Newbury, this afternoon’s running of the Weatherbys-sponsored Agnes Keyser Stakes is the first to be held here at Goodwood. Eight fillies go to post for the Listed event for three-year-olds, which was won in 2018 by Sea Of Class, who won the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks’ on her next two starts before getting within a neck of Enable in the Arc.

Quite whether we have a filly of her ability in this year’s race remains to be seen, with the Paul and Oliver Cole-trained Sumo Sam, who wears a first-time tongue-tie, currently the highest-rated of the octet. Officially rated 98, her Pretty Polly second is probably the best single piece of form on offer, but that came on soft ground and she disappointed at Newmarket last time The likely quick surface is a concern.

Empress Wu is also rated in the 90s (94), but also needs to bounce back from a rather disappointing effort in the Musidora Stakes at York, where she finished 9½ lengths behind Oaks winner, Soul Sister. This represents a drop in class for David Simcock’s Sea The Moon filly, who won a Lingfield maiden over this 10-furlong trip last November and wears a first-time hood this afternoon.

Crystallium takes a huge step up in trip (raced exclusively over 7f to date), whilst the ground is also an unknown for Conservationist who won a novice contest on good-to-soft at Haydock and ran well under similar conditions in handicap company last time. Clive Cox’s daughter of Muhaarar also steps up in distance, racing beyond a mile for the first time

The maiden Elegancia is bred to appreciate this longer trip and was staying on nicely over a mile last time, so could take a step forward, whilst Ermensinde was beaten a long way by Oaks runner-up Savethelastdance in the Weatherbys-sponsored Cheshire Oaks. She was earlier trapped wide around Lingfield, so is another who could put forward an improved effort on better ground, but she has plenty to find.

She is currently rated just 83, as is Henry Candy’s High Spirited, who won a Windsor maiden over a mile last month. She is another who shaped as though the longer trip will suit, but again, she would need a career-best to enter calculations in this grade

Arguably the most interesting runner of all is the once-raced Al Asifah, who justified cramped odds when winning a weak maiden over this trip at Haydock. The daughter of Frankel showed a fine turn of foot to turn away the opposition and given that the runner-up is officially rated 74 (now had eight starts without winning), it would suggest that she ran to a mark in mid-80s on debut, given the ease with which she won. If the Gosden-trained runner can take another step forward and inexperience doesn’t catch her out, she could easily play a leading role. She looked to be a potential pattern-class performer inside the final furlong at the Merseyside track and it will be fascinating to see if she can build on that initial promise

Race Summary

The manner in which AL ASIFAH stamped her authority in a Haydock maiden last month suggests this daughter of Frankel has a bright future ahead. John Gosden sent out the 2017 winner of this race and his team has another prime candidate on their hands with this filly, who is out of half-sister to Group 1 winner Awtaad. There is no doubting Ermesinde faced a stiff test in the Cheshire Oaks last time and is she feared most, although Sumo Sam is dangerous to underestimate.

Win: AL ASIFAH

Race Summary

AGGAGIO found only the unbeaten Courage Mon Ami too strong here in late-May and Gary Moore's five-year-old is potentially well in off just 1lb higher Mountain Road looked one to follow last season and it's too early to be writing him off. The son of Churchill likely has more to come and could emerge as the main challenger, ahead of First Emperor, who is only 4lb higher than his authoritative success over C&D last time.

Win: AGGAGIO

Race Summary

In a small but competitive renewal, the vote goes to CANDLEFORD. The gelded son of Kingman made great strides last season, bolting up in the Duke Of Edinburgh before rounding off the year with creditable efforts in the Cumberland Lodge and Floodlit Stakes. He sets the standard on official ratings and with the ability to go well when fresh (won on his seasonal debut last year), he could take all the beating. Peripatetic is feared most, while both First Ruler and Rousay can't be ruled out either

Win: CANDLEFORD

Danger: Peripatetic Health & Safety Notice

No children under the age of 12 are permitted into the Parade Ring and Winners Enclosure on the grounds of health & safety.

Race Summary

Shobiz won nicely at Newbury when scoring by a length in a class 3 event and, even with a 4lb rise, he is highly likely to be bang there once more. However, a chance can be taken on MOJOMAKER, who shaped with huge encouragement on his first start of the season at Thirsk when beaten into fifth by four and a half lengths and, with a step forward, he could go close off 1lb lower Last-time-out victor Mamillius is also of interest.
