Three Friday Nights

Welcome to the first of our Three Friday Nights featuring the enigmatic Claptone, who will be getting the party started after this evening’s racing.

Tonight’s six-race programme is devoted entirely to Apprentice jockeys, riders in the early stages of their career who can claim a weight allowance commensurate with their experience, so we are guaranteed some competitive racing.

It also provides us with an opportunity to celebrate a former Champion Apprentice who rode his first ever winner on British soil here at Goodwood back in June 1987. Frankie Dettori’s victory aboard the Luca Cumani trained Lizzie Hare was the first of many milestones in a remarkable career, which is set to come to an end in October. In the meantime, we are sure to see him back in the winner’s enclosure on several occasions this summer.

My thanks go to our Official Fixed Odds Betting Partner William Hill who are responsible for three races on this evening’s card. They will be back next week for the second of our Three Friday Nights, which features DJ Felix Da Housecat.

I wish you all a fabulous evening.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse

Course Characteristics

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Goodwood Apprentice Championship Evening Competition format & prizes

Scoring system

Winner…..15pts Second………10pts Third………..7pts Fourth…………5pts Fifth…………3pts Non-runner…4pts

DEAD-HEAT

In the event of a dead-heat the aggregate number of points for the finishing positions contended will be added together and each rider will be allocated an equal share.

NON-RUNNERS

Four points will be awarded to the intended rider of any horse declared to run and subsequently withdrawn.

TROPHIES AND AWARDS

A memento will be presented to the rider of the winner of each of the six races. A trophy will be presented to the rider amassing the most points over the course of the evening.

STYLE AWARD

An additional award will be made to the jockey who, in the opinion of the Clerk of the Course, has delivered the most stylish performance of the evening whether winning or not.

NOTES

Unlike most jockey competitions where participation is by invitation and the jockeys are guaranteed a specific number of rides, not all riders taking part will have the same number of rides. Therefore, there will be those who start the competition with a statistical advantage, hence the suggestion of the Style Award which means even a jockey with only a couple of rides can be in with the chance of winning a prize.

Race Summary

Even though TRAIS FLUORS hasn't scored in two years, the son of Dansili has been progressive this season and kept on for third at Windsor over a mile earlier this month. The nine-year-old can get the better of the unexposed Naasma, who reverts to turf off 2lb higher than when second at Lingfield recently Nonsuch Lad was denied a clear run over 1m 2f at Sandown last month and makes plenty of appeal dropping in trip.

Race Summary

NEVER ENDING didn't do herself any favours when slowly away at Newmarket on her latest start, but the way she finished that race was eye-catching and, with improvement expected, she may be able to go one better on this occasion. Naomi Lapaglia should be more at home in this grade, having been outclassed in the 1000 Guineas, while Sunglasses looks to build on a taking debut success at Chelmsford last August. Bloomwithgrace and Platinum Jubilee cannot be ruled out either.

Pinwheel wasn't at his very best at Chepstow last time but he was placed on his two previous outings and it is far too soon to be writing him off. Concierge has been running well enough in defeat of late and completes the shortlist.

The Importance Of Apprentice Races

In a racing industry first, all six of tonight’s races are restricted to Apprentice jockeys, young riders aged between 16 and 26 and working towards gaining a full professional licence.

Apprentices claim a weight allowance of between 3lbs and 7lbs to compensate for inexperience, and although they regularly ride in races alongside professional jockeys, Apprentice races provide valuable opportunities compete against riders of a similar standard.

The amount an Apprentice can claim is dependent on experience and is denoted by the figure in brackets next to their name in the racecard. According to the Rules of Racing, Apprentice jockeys can claim 7lb until they have ridden a career total of 20 winners, 5lb until they have ridden 50 winners and 3lb until they have ridden 95 winners. These thresholds may be amended depending on the race conditions.

This evening’s races will count towards the Apprentice Jockeys’ Championship which runs throughout the Flat championship season beginning on the first weekend in May and concluding at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day in October.

Marco Ghiani was crowned Champion Apprentice in 2021 and past winners in the last decade include Cieren Fallon (2019 & 2020), Jason Watson (2018), David Egan (2017), Josephine Gordon (2016), Tom Marquand (2015) and Oisin Murphy (2014).

Goodwood is delighted to offer a Leading Jockey Award to the Apprentice Rider with the most points following the culmination of this evening’s card. We wish them every success for this fixture and in their future careers.

Al Motasim was runner-up at Haydock on his latest start and is capable of progressing from that display Fahari was seventh in the aforementioned contest, but she had been very consistent prior to that effort.

In Memory of Bruce Holland

Bruce was born in London on 14 June 1947 and sadly passed away on 4 February 2023.

Although he always lived in London or in Hertfordshire his heart was always down here in Sussex where he had a holiday home for the past twenty years.

His love of Goodwood began fifty five years ago, when he first came to the races with my parents who were members and this was what prompted him to join.

He was a wonderful husband, dad and grandad to all of our family and a much loved friend to all that knew him.

Bruce travelled & worked in many places around the world and played and enjoyed numerous sports and activities, so many in fact that in his younger days he was referred to as James Bond, something he secretly loved! However West Sussex and Goodwood especially on race days was always the place he loved most, where he spent his happiest times and the place that has given all of us the best memories.

Race Summary

Age Of Sail is sure to prove popular after making all at Chepstow last Friday and a 5lb penalty isn't likely to prevent another bold bid, particularly as Gary Moore's inmate is 3lb well in. However, THE THUNDERER did extremely well to get up at Wolverhampton on his stable debut in April and, with the second and third winning since, a 5lb rise in the handicap looks potentially lenient. The in-form Later Darling completes the shortlist.
