MayFestival

Welcome to the opening day of our May Festival.

Today’scard boasts two Listed contests in the William Hill Height of Fashion Stakes and the British EBF 40th Anniversary Cocked Hat Stakes. Both races enjoy Listed status, carry prize funds of £60,000 and were introduced to the May Festival programme in the early 1970s, initially conceived as trials for the Derby

Today, we also welcome our generous sponsors; The British European Breeders’ Fund (who are celebrating their 40th anniversary year) and the award-winning multi-national communications consultancy, Hanover Communications. We also thank our Official Fixed Odds Betting Partner, William Hill, for their continued support of racing at Goodwood this year.

Members of the Goodwood Racehorse Owners’ Group will take particular interest in the concluding two-mile handicap named in their honour, with limited spaces still available to join the latest scheme before the end of May

The May Festival continues tomorrow, when we can look forward to another day of exceptional racing on the Downs.

In the meantime, Iwish you athrilling and enjoyable day here at Goodwood.

CourseCharacteristics

Goodwood’spronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Race Summary

The market will be akey guide but marginal preference is for PACKARD, who cost 150,000 euros as ayearling and the son of Mehmas is closely related to plenty of two-year-old winners. Double Jump is also very interesting given thathis dam won at Listed level early in her juvenile career and Clive Cox's colt was another expensive purchase at 180,000gns. Others to note are Ambushed, Barnwell Boy and Moyet.

TODAY'S LISTED RACE

The Height of Fashion Stakes

Sharing top billing on today’s competitive seven-race programme are the British EBF 40th Anniversary Cocked Hat Stakes and the William Hill Height of Fashion Stakes. Both races enjoy Listed status, carry prize funds of £60,000 and were introduced to the May Festival programme in the early 1970s.

Initially conceived as trials for the Derby and Oaks and named after Goodwood Cup winner Predominate and Oaks heroine Lupe respectively, subsequent changes to the overall Pattern race programme seemingly rendered them less relevant to the Epsom Classics.

In 2007 the Predominate Stakes was renamed the Cocked Hat Stakes and the ‘Lupe’ became the Height of Fashion Stakes in honour of The Queen’s 1982 winner, an outstanding broodmare who went on to produce multiple Group 1winners Unfuwain and Naayef and the 1989 Derby victor, Nashwan.

However, just three years later along came the globe-trotting Snow Fairy and duly stamped her name on the race, readily following up in the Oaks the following month. It looked for atime as though the feat might be repeated ayear later when Beatrice Aurore, owned and bred by Benny Andersson of ABBA fame, went to Epsom in fine shape but could only manage sixth place in the fillies’ Classic.

These days success in the William Hill Height of Fashion Stakes is more likely to book aticket to Ascot rather than Epsom as indeed it did for last year’s winner, Sea Silk Road, who finished acreditable second in the Group 2Ribblesdale Stakes at the Royal meeting in June.

Race Summary

It's difficult to rule anyofthese out with improvement on the cards, so only atentative vote can go to ARAMINTA. It's not often Henry Candy sends out awinning debutant, so it was all the more striking when she cruised to success at Newbury last month. She then lost nothing in defeat when third over 1m here, and the step up in trip can see her in an even better light. Heavenly Breath and Veil Of Shadows are feared most, while Inner Space heads the remainder.

Race Summary

Afairly open contest in which marginalpreference lieswith KLONDIKE. Agame winner over 1m3f at Newbury last month, William Haggas' expensive colt can make it two out of two, and the fact he holds an entry for the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot suggests he is showing all the right signs at home. Gregory is another who made asuccessful start to his career and he can give the selection plenty to think about, along with the grade-dropping Batemans Bay

Race Summary

Blazeon Five is likely to prove popular after regaining the winning thread at Ascot, and a2lb rise is unlikely to prevent her from going closeonce more. Achance, however, is taken on GRANDMASTER FLASH. He wasn't seen to best effect when finishing fourth over 1m6f here earlier in the month, but he offered enough to suggest he can land arace of this nature. Better is also expected from First Emperor now returned to 2m.
