Season Finale

The trees are just beginning to display their autumn colours, creating the perfect setting for us to enjoy the racing for one last time before the winter break. You can warm yourself against any chill in the air by toasting marshmallows in one of the fire pits.

This afternoon, our first race is the Alderbrook Handicap Stakes, a flat race for professional jump jockeys. This two-mile contest provides a one-off opportunity to see some of the stars of the National Hunt world taking on the unique contours of Goodwood. The race is named after the 1995 Champion Hurdle-winner Alderbrook, an extremely versatile horse whose eleven wins on the flat included three victories here.

The duel for the perpetual Dick Hern Trophy, awarded to the leading trainer at Goodwood during the season, looks set to be a closely fought title clash between Andrew Balding and Charlie Appleby Berkshire handler Andrew Balding leads by the narrowest of margins, with nine successes over Charlie Appleby, who enjoyed a hugely profitable spell at this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival.

I would like to thank William Hill, the European Breeders’ Fund and Inkerman for their extremely generous support of racing today.

I wish you all a wonderful afternoon at Goodwood and I look forward to welcoming you back in 2023.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse

Welcome to Goodwood for our Season Finale, which brings the curtain down on another year of racing here on the South Downs.

Happy 80th Wynne Tufnell

Wynne Tufnell is celebrating his 80th birthday. A former Steward at Goodwood Racecourse for over 20 years, Wynne also served as a Steward for approaching 40 years at Epsom, Fontwell, Kempton, Plumpton, Salisbury and Windsor Racecourses.

Wynne’s passion for horseracing started at a young age. Together with his sister, the late Meriel Tufnell, who was the first lady to win a race under rules in 1972, the duo competed fiercely both between the flags and under rules. Meriel went on to be the first Female Champion Jockey Whereas, enforced retirement was imposed on Wynne, having broken his back when race riding aged 22. Upham-based trainer, Bill Wightman, snapped up the youthful Wynne as his Assistant Trainer and after a 10-year association, Wynne managed his own racing stable at Riverhill Farm, Binsted training point-to-pointers and hunter chasers. A career highlight was training Great Crack, who finished 2nd in the Aintree Foxhunters behind Rolls Rambler in 1979.

Wynne’s wife Gina and their three boys Chris, Mike and Simon would like to take the opportunity to say ‘Happy Birthday’ with love from all the family.

Race Summary

Royaume Uni was in good form when last seen over hurdles in April and he should prove competitive now running off a 6lb lower mark than when last seen on the Flat, with Lifetime Legend also one to be interested in now upped in distance. With race fitness assured, however, BYRON HILL makes most appeal after a convincing display when winning over this distance at Ffos Las a fortnight ago and he could prove a 5lb rise to be lenient.

Despite being friendless in the betting, there was plenty to like about Many Rivers' debut effort at Newbury and she has to go on the shortlist here along with Yacowlef, who was a promising third over this C&D on his penultimate start, and Swift Asset, whose best form sets the standard. Any value, however, could lie with the steadily improving FIERCE, who could plausibly find another level over this extra furlong.

Race

With ground conditions looking set to be ideal, it is entirely feasible that LOVELY BREEZE can avenge a narrow defeat at the hands of Spanish Star in last year's renewal of this race. Hugo Palmer's filly already has two C&D wins to her name and William Buick, who was in the saddle for one of those comfortable successes, is booked once again. Lihou creeps in at the foot of the weights and also merits respect.

The British EBF Catherine Reed Memorial Novice Stakes

Catherine was born in Ballynoe, Cork in the Republic of Ireland on the family farm and came to work in the UK in 1965 where she married and was based for the rest of her life. Already familiar with the popular point to point scene back in Ireland racing was in her blood and a horse first raced in her colours in 1986. TAUBER went on to win 17 races including being placed at Goodwood as a two year old. Family were always her main priority and while finding time for many enjoyable days out at the races, including Goodwood on a number of occasions, ownership only became significant in the last decade. This period provided some wonderful memories with winners at 25 different courses including a Frankie Dettori flying dismount and a memorable victory at Goodwood in 2018 where the picture was taken.

Catherine sadly passed away last year and the family are pleased and proud to honour her memory with the running of this race where hopefully a horse will run in her colours. Here today are many friends and family including her husband, two sons, sister and brother.

Race Summary

Alumnus looks an interesting contender with William Buick booked for his debut, but RATHGAR took a decent step forward when third behind a few nice types here last month and with potentially more to come from Mick Channon's colt, he's fancied to make it third-time lucky. King's Code and Ramensky both hail from powerful yards and they've shown enough on their previous starts to suggest they can go close today.

Race Summary

PRIDE OF PRIORY didn't receive much luck in running when attempting to make it four on the bounce at Hamilton in August and the son of Pivotal is likely to bounce back on this occasion. Saratoga Gold has progressed nicely on his most recent efforts and arrives in search of a four-timer, having gone up 14lb for those victories. Tritonic was last seen finishing second at Newmarket in April and is expected to be competitive along with Ajero.

Race Summary

DELOREAN was below par when finishing a distant ninth at Haydock last month, but he had proven himself at the same venue the time before on handicap debut and Ralph Beckett's gelding may benefit from an ease in grade. Mystery Fox sports first-time cheekpieces and could have a say in proceedings for a stable currently in decent form. Alablaq has been a consistent performer of late and he is respected, while Stately Home and Global Esteem appear best of the remainder.
