elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the fifth day of the 2022 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

First run in 1840, the Stewards’ Cup is the highlight of this afternoon’s racing, with a capacity field of 28 runners charging over the hill from the six-furlong start. A mustsee sporting spectacle, this race is also the biggest betting contest of the week.

The Group 3 Qatar Gordon Stakes is another race with a long and celebrated history, having first been staged in 1902. This middle-distance race often proves to be a trial for the fi nal Classic of the season, the St. Leger. Trainer Sir Michael Stoute has undoubtedly the best record in the race, having won it ten times. There are many fabulous vantage points from which to follow the racing action. The Gordon Enclosure boosts the new Sussex Beer Garden, alongside The Earl’s Lawn where delicious street food by KERB and live music will see you celebrating long into the evening. In the Richmond Enclosure, paddock side bars, including the Oak Tree Lawn bar presented by Whispering Angel and the Gusbourne Pavilion, are well worth a visit for a refreshing drink in the summer sun. We are extremely grateful to Qatar, Coral, EBF, Medallia and FBA for their generous support of this afternoon’s racing. With seven races to look forward to, I hope that you have a very enjoyable time at Goodwood today, and I look forward to welcoming you back for the August Bank Holiday Weekend meeting when racing returns to the South Downs.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon 3

Glorious Goodwood

The first Duke of Richmond’s father, King Charles II loved horse racing and the Duke was famously conceived during a house party where everyone was staying for racing at Newmarket. ‘Match’ racing between two horses was a fashionable sport enjoyed by the early Dukes on the Harroway, the open stretch of land on the South Downs above Goodwood. In 1801, the third Duke of Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. The event was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting. The Goodwood meeting took place every summer from then on, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the meeting was dubbed by the press – become part of the English social season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously dubbed the meeting ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The Goodwood meeting became the final fling of the season before everyone departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the late (tenth) Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

James Peill, Curator of the Goodwood Collection and author of Glorious Goodwood: A Biography of England’s Greatest Sporting Estate, Constable, 2019.

The Course course characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

2021 WINNER: IMPERIAL FIGHTER (IRE) 2 9 0 Oisin Murphy 9-1 (Andrew Balding) 11 ran

Race Summary There was plenty of talk about CLASSIC before his debut at Newbury 15 days ago and he shaped with lots of promise that day, coming from the rear to finish an eye-catching fourth. The Dubawi colt should have learnt plenty from that experience and he could prove tough to beat here. Loyal Touch was only beaten three-parts of a length on his debut at Salisbury last month and is likely to be in the shake-up again, while The Foxes needs to settle better than he did at Royal Ascot but can't be ruled out.

Win: CLASSIC

Danger: Loyal Touch

STEWARDS NOTED: MOKAATIL:Following its run on 4/6/2022 it was reported that the horse hung left handed.

Race Summary LETHAL LEVI is tough to oppose here. A winner off a mark of 85 at the beginning of this month, Karl Burke's gelding won well off 91 last week and has a mark of 100 for future. Carrying just a 6lb penalty for his first win due to the conditions of this race, he is 9lb well-in on official figures and could take all the beating in this. Nelson Gay is interesting if improving for the step up to this trip, likewise Stone Of Destiny, while Mokaatil could have a say.

The Johnston stable has been responsible for the winner of this on four occasions since 2015 and can come out on top again courtesy of SOAPY STEVENS, who stopped Red Flyer springing a massive shock at Newmarket's July Festival, with Sam Cooke hot on their heels in fourth. Fellow hat-trick seeker Bague D'or looks a stayer going places, while Cemhaan failed in his bid for a three-timer at Royal Ascot but still emerged with credit. Valley Forge and Trawlerman appeal too.

The history of Lille Langtry at Goodwood

Born on the island of Jersey, Lillie Langtry was a famous actress who became the mistress of the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII. They remained friends after their relationship ended and she would advise him on his stables. Under the pseudonym of ‘Mr Jersey’ (it was not thought feminine to own racehorses), she became a successful racehorse owner herself, scoring a double at Goodwood in 1899 with Merman, winning both the Goodwood Stakes and the Goodwood Cup. It was in 2004 that a 14-furlong contest previously known as the Gladness Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 status and called the Lillie Langtry Stakes after her. Simple Verse, successful in 2015 for trainer Ralph Beckett and jockey Harry Bentley, is arguably the best early winner of the Lillie Langtry Stakes, having gone on to Group 1 success in both the final British Classic, the St Leger at Doncaster, and the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot. The race was promoted to Group 2 status for the 2018 renewal, with prize money tripled to £300,000. This followed the decision of the European Pattern Committee to enhance the programme for stayers. Subsequently, the quality of the field has grown in statue in recent years. The long-striding filly Enbihaar claimed victory in 2019 and 2020 before Wonderful Tonight, trained locally by David Menuisier at Coombelands near Pulborough, stayed on gamely under William Buick in what proved to be her final success before retirement.

Race Summary SEA LA ROSA looks ready for this trip now and on the balance of her form, she looks the one to beat with Tom Marquand back in the saddle today. Emily Dickinson appears her biggest threat after a respectable showing when fourth in the Irish Oaks a fortnight ago. Prior to that she was just denied over this trip in Group 3 company at Leopardstown and looks most likely to chase selection home. Glenartney looks to be still improving and is most fancied of the rest.

Often referred to as a ‘Cavalry Charge’ and inaugurated in 1840, the Coral Stewards’ Cup is one of the oldest and most competitive races at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The origin of the race dates right back to 1834 when the most senior Steward at the racecourse awarded a cup to the winner of any race of his choosing on that day. The chosen race varied each year, meaning the Stewards’ Cup was run over distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile and a half. In its modern form, the race is run over six furlongs on the Saturday of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, the feature race on the card, and is open to horses aged three years old and upwards. The support of Coral this year will extend the race’s rich heritage, with prize money of £250,000 on offer. The last horse to win back-to-back runnings of the Stewards’ Cup was Sky Diver in 1967 and 1968. Since then, it has become a nemesis of horses returning looking to win the race for a second consecutive year. Some of the most recognisable winners of this race in the past include the likes of Lochsong, Danetime, Hoof It and Magical Memory who all competed in fields of nearly 30 horses, making the race a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed. Ex-Jockey and now trainer, Richard Hughes boasts an impressive record in the modern era, winning the race four times between 1995 and 2014. Frankie Dettori won the race for the first time in 2015, ticking off one of the only major UK races to have evaded him so far. The second win was not far behind for the charismatic jockey as he took victory in 2017 aboard Lancelot Du Lac for trainer Dean Ivory. In 2018, Brighton-born Jason Watson, teamed up with top-weight Gifted Master for Hugo Palmer to score en route to the 2018 champion apprentice title. Khaadem and Summerghand added their names to the roll of honour in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Commanche Falls provided jockey Connor Beasley with a timely and top-level success in 2021 when most questioned whether he would ever ride again after a sickening fall at Wolverhampton. This success at Goodwood was the biggest of his career.

Race Summary A typically competitive renewal with a mixture of progressive handicappers coming up against Group-class performers. The vote, however, goes to SAINT LAWRENCE, who has run with credit in Group company, including when sixth in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot, and the drop into a handicap for the first time may yield some improvement. Inver Park arrives in search of a four-timer having won at the Royal meeting last time, while others for the shortlist include First Folio, Chil Chil and Whenthedealinsdone.

STEWARDS NOTED: LAASUDOOD:Following its run on 9/7/2022 it was reported that the horse would prefer easier ground. GALIAC:Following its run on 1/7/2022 it was reported that the horse was hampered late-on.

Race Summary In a wide-open contest the marginal preference is for POSITIVE IMPACT, who was only beaten a short head into second on his handicap debut at Newmarket last time. That appears to be strong form and his 5lb rise in the ratings is negated by his rider's valuable claim. Spirit Of Nguru and Zero Carbon are closely matched based on their meeting at Haydock a few weeks ago and both could go well today. Others to consider are Koy Koy and Laasudood.

Race Summary FOREST FALCON could quite easily bookend the meeting given Harry Davies' 5lb claim in the saddle negates a 5lb penalty he carries for winning the opening handicap here on Tuesday under Frankie Dettori. Kitsune Power is a big danger getting a weightfor-age allowance, though, as Roger Varian's charge won well at Nottingham two starts ago and then performed admirably in defeat in the Britannia at Royal Ascot. Bolthole can be forgiven a lacklustre effort in the aforementioned Ascot handicap last month and is another to take seriously.

Danger: Kitsune Power

Win: FOREST FALCON
