elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the fourth day of the 2022 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

This afternoon features the fastest race of the week with the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, a race named after King George V. This ﬁve-furlong contest will see the horses charge past the grandstands in a showcase of raw speed. The King George Qatar Stakes is one of three Group races today, alongside the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes and the Group 3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Another highlight of today’s seven-race card is the Coral Golden Mile, a hugely competitive handicap that is often one of the biggest betting races of the year at Goodwood. While you are here, do have a look at the new Earl’s Lawn, located at the heart of the Gordon Enclosure. Racegoers can enjoy live music, Seafood and Champagne at the Veuve Clicquot Bar or simply soak up the sun and celebrate with friends. The Duke of Richmond & Gordon

Glorious Goodwood

The first Duke of Richmond’s father, King Charles II loved horse racing and the Duke was famously conceived during a house party where everyone was staying for racing at Newmarket. ‘Match’ racing between two horses was a fashionable sport enjoyed by the early Dukes on the Harroway, the open stretch of land on the South Downs above Goodwood. In 1801, the third Duke of Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. The event was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting. The Goodwood meeting took place every summer from then on, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the meeting was dubbed by the press – become part of the English social season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously dubbed the meeting ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The Goodwood meeting became the final fling of the season before everyone departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the late (tenth) Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.

To celebrate the 9th year of our racing partnership, L’Ormarins, sponsors of the Group 3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Stakes, are offering the prize of a lifetime to the winner of today’s Best Dressed competition. A hotly-contested five-furlong event for three-year-olds and upwards, the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes is Goodwood’s premier race for sprinters. A comparatively modern innovation in the context of Goodwood’s 216-year racing history, it was inaugurated in 1911 to mark the succession to the British throne of King George V the previous year. Sir Gordon Richards set a likely never-to-be-beaten record of riding the winner in six consecutive seasons beginning in 1947. The legendary Lester Piggott is still the race’s most successful jockey with an amazing nine wins, the last of which was on Anita’s Prince in 1984. The brilliant mare Lochsong beat Paris House in a thrilling renewal in 1993 under Frankie Dettori. She returned twelve months later to register a second success and become one of only half a dozen horses to win the race twice. Like Lochsong, another talented mare Hever Golf Rose, who triumphed in 1995, went on to win the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp. Fillies and mares have maintained a good record in the King George Qatar Stakes in recent years with Land Of Dreams (1998), Cassandra Go (2000), Agnetha (2002), La Cucaracha (2006), and Enticing (2008) among the flag bearers. The mare Ortensia became the first Australian-trained horse to win a race at Goodwood when scoring five years ago and underlined her talent with success in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York subsequently. Three-year-olds have the best record in the race since the war, with over 30 winners coming from that age group, while favourites also hold a reliable statistic in the race. Battaash was an incredibly impressive winner in 2017, scoring by 2¼ lengths before going on to take the Group 1 Prix de L’Abbaye at Chantilly. A commanding victory by Battaash in 2018, 2019, and 2020 means the late Hamdan Al Maktoum has enjoyed much success in the race. However, last year it was French raider Suesa who broke Battaash’s stranglehold on the race when he swooped late for French trainer Francois Rohaut.
