Family Race Day Welcome to our Family Race Day, a fixture that promises to be a momentous celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Enjoy a complimentary cup of tea and slice of cake along the tree-lined concourse, beneath a ceiling of billowing bunting and festoon lighting, to mark The Queen’s historic reign. Proceeding the thoroughbred racing are two Charles Owen Pony Races in which young jockeys of the future will be learning how to handle Goodwood’s unique contours. Though small, these ponies are very fast, and the races are certainly no less competitive than those later on. We then have seven races to enjoy this afternoon, and appropriately, we start with the ‘Goodwood Celebrates The Platinum Jubilee Handicap’. Our thanks go to sponsors William Hill, Rod Gaskin and the British European Breeders Fund for their generous support of racing. Aside from the racing, we have trips to the start and fun for the whole family, with a variety of activities for children to enjoy, including a magician, traditional fairground, face painting and a balloon artist. I wish you all a very enjoyable afternoon here at Goodwood.

HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN AT GOODWOOD At the very first public race meeting at Goodwood in 1802, the Prince of Wales’s horse, Rebel, beat the Duke of Richmond’s horse, Cedar. Ever since then we have been privileged to enjoy Royal horses racing at Goodwood, including many winners. Edward VII had eleven winners, including Persimmon who went on to win the Derby, the St Leger, the Eclipse Stakes and the Ascot Gold Cup. His son, George V, won two important races at Goodwood: the Goodwood Stakes and the Sussex Stakes. Her Majesty The Queen continues this long tradition of racing monarchs with a string of wins over the last seventy years, including twice winning the Goodwood Cup, one of the foremost tests of stamina in the country. In recent years, Goodwood Racecourse has celebrated a plethora of winners in her famous purple and scarlet colours. Call To Mind won the March Stakes back in 2017 before Seniority was successful in the 2018 running of the Golden Mile, and it was at last season’s flagship Qatar Goodwood Festival where Her Majesty’s latest winner came on the South Downs with homebred Wink Of An Eye.

The Queen and the 9th Duke of Richmond & Gordon at Goodwood Racecourse during Raceweek in the 1960s. That decade she had three winners at Goodwood.

The Course Course Characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Race Summary ASCOT ADVENTURE only ever seemed to be doing just enough when getting up late on at Haydock last month and a 5lb rise could prove lenient. He is narrowly preferred to The Attorney, who wasn't beaten far when fourth in this contest last year and was given a pipe-opener over C&D last month. The Turpinator may have disappointed in the Victoria Cup last time but this represents a much easier task, while C&D winner Notions is another to consider.

Race Summary Al Khazneh is hard to discount given his debut performance, but he was outpaced in the final stages so preference is for FLAG FLYING, who is bred to appreciate this sort of trip. His dam won on both good and soft ground, suggesting he should be versatile enough to handle the drying conditions. Bluelight Bay cannot be ruled out either having run a promising second on his debut outing over this course and distance.

Race Summary DUNNINGTON LAD can give weight and a beating to these rivals. His win and fifthplaced efforts are the two single best pieces of form on offer and, although he struggled in Listed company last time, he can bounce right back to form in this lower grade. Race Summary In an open event the vote goes to DANCE TO PARIS, who is just 1lb above her last winning mark and found only one too good on her seasonal return at Chester last month. Mellow Magic has filled second place twice at this venue in recent months and she has to be of some interest, while Make My Day and Whitehaven are others who merit places on the shortlist.

Race Summary Knight Of Honour has placed on all three starts to date and the son of Decorated Knight is likely to be a leading player once again. That said, the manner in which he saw his race out at Leicester last time didn't entirely suggest a step up in trip would eke out improvement, so the vote goes to BROADSPEAR. Roger Varian's colt ran well on his return when second at Thirsk and the extra couple of furlongs promise to benefit him. Dancing Tango and Nawras are others who are open to improvement.

Race Summary NEW HEIGHTS has improved in each of her three starts so far this year and always looked to be doing enough when making all over 1m1f at Sandown last time. A 2lb rise is deemed lenient and she could follow up. Oriental Art wasn't disgraced on his reappearance at Newbury last month and warrants respect returning to a venue he likes, while the consistent Meadram and Bath scorer Militry Decoration add further spice to the race.
