May Festival Welcome to day one of the May Festival, where high-quality racing takes centre stage. The highlight of the seven-race card this afternoon features the Listed British Stallions EBF Cocked Hat Stakes. The race was first run in 1970 when Her Majesty The Queen’s horse Charlton was ridden to victory by jockey Joe Mercer. Run for three-year-old colts, a host of up-and-coming equine stars have won this race en route to a fruitful summer campaign. Dubai Millennium won the Cocked Hat Stakes and went on to win the Dubai World Cup, then the richest race in the world. A well-regarded Derby trial, last year’s victor Lone Eagle was within a neck of taking the Irish Derby following success here on the South Downs. Today’s racecard is boosted by the Listed Height Of Fashion Stakes, run over the same distance as the Cocked Hat Stakes but for fillies. Love Divine and Snow Fairy collected this valuable prize before going on to win The Oaks at Epsom. Please make the most of the live music and trips to the start today. It is a great way to go behind the scenes and get up close to the horses and jockeys. A big thank you to the sponsors of today’s racing, the European Breeders’ Fund and William Hill. I wish all the owners with horses running at Goodwood today the very best of luck and I look forward to welcoming you back to Goodwood tomorrow for the second day of our May Festival.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse

The Gambing Act Review Email your MP in less than a minute – we can all make a difference! We absolutely support the objectives of protecting vulnerable individuals from gambling-related harm, but it is imperative that any new legislation is proportionate, targeted and evidence-based and will not result in any unintended economic consequences to British horse racing. As a supporter of horseracing, we urge you to make your MP aware that you do not want any future gambling regulation to affect your civil liberties and freedom to choose how you spend your time and money enjoying horseracing. Potential measures could include affordability checks and limits on how much you can stake and deposit.

Simply 1. Visit racingtv.eaction.org.uk/GamblingReview 2. Enter your postcode to find your MP 3. Put your name to a prepared letter

The process is straightforward and will take less than a minute to complete, but could make a real difference to the future of the sport.

Thank you for your help in supporting the sport

Race Summary Although KAASIB has to concede 6lb to all of his rivals, he's looked above-average on both starts and is fancied to follow up his Salisbury win. He's arguably unlucky not to be unbeaten, having been denied a clear run on debut, and this extra furlong shouldn't be an inconvenience. Charlie Appleby excels with his newcomers and Mischief Magic must be respected. Royal Scotsman shaped well on his first start when fourth and is sure to appreciate this step up in trip.

Race Summary LAWFUL COMMAND showed plenty of tenacity over this course and distance, leading early before battling back after being headed. Brian Meehan's charge only had a neck in hand of Wodeton that day and is 1lb worse off, but the way he ran suggests he might be tough to pass once getting his nose in front. Spinaround won at Newmarket last season and returned to action with a narrow defeat at Wolverhampton last time, while Rousay could build on a solid handicap bow at Salisbury.

Race Summary In a wide-open event the marginal preference is for SEA SILK ROAD, who readily accounted for a decent field of maidens over 1m at Nottingham recently. The daughter of Sea The Stars should have no problem handling this step up in trip and she may have more improvement left to come. Emotion also won very impressively on her most recent outing and she is an obvious threat to the selection. The shortlist is completed by Eternal Pearl and Makinmedoit.

STEWARDS NOTED: DUTCH DECOY:Following its run on 14/5/2022 it was reported that the horse was hampered at the last furlong.

Race Summary It is hard to oppose the William Haggas-trained MONTASSIB, who is having his first taste in handicap company. The lightly raced four-year-old was a cosy winner at Wetherby last month and could prove well treated off his current mark. The Attorney had a fine time of it last season winning two times and must be taken seriously on his seasonal reappearance. Lord Rapscallion was beaten half a length in this race last year and is respected off a 5lb lower mark this time.

Win: Montassib

Race Summary Lysander still holds a Derby entry and showed he has plenty of class when bolting up in a Newcastle novice stakes last time, but it may pay to focus on the Godolphin pair in this contest. Aldous Huxley was too keen early on at Newmarket last time, but kept on bravely for second and could have more to offer, though NATURAL WORLD gets the vote. He was not disgraced after setting the pace in the Lingfield Derby Trial and could dictate terms here.

Win: Natural World

2021 WINNER: EAST ASIA (IRE) 6 8 13 William Buick 11-5 (Ian Williams) 13 ran

STEWARDS NOTED: CLOUD THUNDER:Following its run on 8/5/2022 it was reported that the horse was never travelling. AGGAGIO:Following its run on 17/4/2022 it was reported that the horse made a bad mistake.

Race Summary Goshen hasn't been seen on the Flat since 2020 but the classy hurdler, who landed the Kingwell at Wincanton when last seen in February, is an intriguing prospect back on the level, with a mark of 87 unlikely to be beyond him. However, he might have to settle for minor honours behind SARATOGA GOLD, who displayed a striking change of gear when scoring at this venue on his return last month. Mellow Magic may have more to offer now stepping up in trip and cannot be ruled out either.

Danger: Goshen

Health & Safety Notice No children under the age of 12 are permitted into the Parade Ring and Winners Enclosure on the grounds of health & safety.
