OPENING WEEKEND Welcome to the second day of our Season Opener. Today’s seven-race card features some fabulous racing, the highlight of which is the Listed Conqueror Stakes sponsored by William Hill. Won in 2019 by Awesometank, who was trained by William Haggas and ridden by Pat Dobbs, this race has been a target in recent years for good horses. The versatile mare Nyaleti claimed victory in 2018 for Mark Johnson, before going on to emphatic victory in the German 1,000 Guineas. Whether at home or abroad, we wish future success to all of today’s runners.
Whether you are new to racing or a devoted follower of the turf, there are some wonderful extra activities to be enjoyed to make the most of your day. The Retraining of Racehorses parade will take place in the paddock before racing and features Her Majesty The Queen’s Barbers Shop. The Lennox enclosure hosts The Racing To School activities (which enables youngsters to hone their race riding skills) and Meet The Racehorse.
Our thanks go to William Hill, the Trustees of the European Breeders’ Fund, alongside the family and friends of Julia Tanswell, for their support of the racing this afternoon.
I look forward to seeing you at our May Festival where we have two days of high-quality racing. Do think about trying one of our restaurants where you can enjoy good food and panoramic views of the South Downs.

The Gambing Act Review Email your MP in less than a minute – we can all make a difference! We absolutely support the objectives of protecting vulnerable individuals from gambling-related harm, but it is imperative that any new legislation is proportionate, targeted and evidence-based and will not result in any unintended economic consequences to British horse racing. As a supporter of horseracing, we urge you to make your MP aware that you do not want any future gambling regulation to affect your civil liberties and freedom to choose how you spend your time and money enjoying horseracing. Potential measures could include affordability checks and limits on how much you can stake and deposit.
Simply 1. Visit racingtv.eaction.org.uk/GamblingReview 2. Enter your postcode to find your MP 3. Put your name to a prepared letter
The process is straightforward and will take less than a minute to complete, but could make a real difference to the future of the sport.
Thank you for your help in supporting the sport

RETRAINING OF RACEHORSES (ROR) PARADE
12.15pm A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.15pm. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of racing charity, the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features some familiar names who have adapted to a new career, notably the Group 1 winning sprinter, Limato, and the Queen’s former top class chaser Barbers Shop. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR: – Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities; – Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses; – Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing; and – Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care. RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball. For more information visit www.ror.org.uk

1. Barbers Shop – Ridden by Katie Jerram-Hunnable 20-year-old by Saddlers’ Hall, formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder – Queen Elizabeth Bred by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Barbers Shop raced in The Queen’s colours with distinction. An eight-time winner, he was also placed in a King George and a Hennessy. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, he has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable and under her care he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. Among his many successes was being crowned champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing.
2. Badenscoth Ridden by Rachel Wells 8-year-old by Foxwedge, formerly trained by Dean Ivory Breeder – Peter J Skinner In a 37-race career spanning five seasons, Badenscoth won seven times, including once at Goodwood. Following his retirement in autumn 2021 Rachel Wells purchased Badenscoth earlier this year and she soon knew he would become her ‘forever horse’ on account of his very kind and sweet nature. Rachel is bringing him along slowly with a view to eventually doing some eventing. Rachel says, “I’m really looking forward to what the future brings, and I hope we have many happy years together.”
3. Frank Sandatra – Ridden by Alexandra Gooding 9-year-old by Equiano, formerly trained by Peter Crate Breeder – Peter Crate Frank Sandatra did not have a distinguished racing career, running seven times without troubling the judge, but a lack of success on track has not impeded his post-racing career. “Frankie” joined Alexandra Gooding last summer and applying similar principles to Pilates, she has since been working on developing Frankie’s core strength, balance and suppleness through flat work and dressage. They have just started competing at Novice Dressage level and Alexandra says, “We are looking forward to an exciting summer of dressage, showing and maybe some jumping.”
4. King’s Warrior – Ridden by Jo Brisland 15-year-old by King’s Best, formerly trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam Breeder – Sunny Days Limited King’s Warrior enjoyed a diverse racing career, being trained both in France and England and running over hurdles and on the flat. His highlight was winning the 2012 running of the valuable John Smith’s Cup at York. As a yearling he was ridden away by today’s rider, Jo Brisland, who followed him throughout his racing career and after his retirement in 2015 his owner kindly gave him to Jo to start a second career. Together they have competed in many disciplines, including three times qualifying for the Tattersalls RoR In-hand showing final at the Jockey Club RoR National Championships.
5. Limato – Ridden by Ellie Greenhalgh 10-year-old by Tagula, formerly trained by Henry Candy Breeder – Seamus Phelan A top-class sprinter and winner of 14 of his 33 races, including the Group 1 July Cup, Limato has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable since he retired from racing in autumn 2020. Katie reports that Limato settled in really quickly and is a real character. He loves Princess the cat and his stable mate Ballin My Lady. Last year Limato took part in RoR showing classes, concluding with a win at the West Wiltshire show, and the plan is to continue down the showing path and hopefully secure some more good results for his very supportive owner Paul Jacobs.

STEWARDS NOTED: SHOWDIEMLAD:Following its run on 13/10/2021 it was reported that the horse was slow away and never travelled.
Race Summary Wild Mountain showed improved form in cheekpieces towards the end of last year and, on his return to 7f, is an interesting prospect. However, a mark of 77 may not truly reflect the potential that DISTANT LIGHT possesses on her handicap debut and the well-bred filly makes the most appeal. Captain's Bar caught the eye making late headway at Kempton on his latest start and, with the step up in trip looking a positive move, can also have a say.
Danger: Wild Mountain
Win: Distant Light

Julia loved racing and owned many racehorses throughout her life, including Daddy’s Daughter, which won at Fontwell. Soon after they moved to Spain. In 2006, Julia was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and she and her husband battled this cruel disease for eleven years before she passed away in November 2021. They were together for 42 years. Race Summary In what is likely to be an informative contest, SUNSET AND VINE could come out on top after his debut effort saw him finish on the coattails of rivals now rated 109 and 87. He makes his turf debut this afternoon and that could unlock some more improvement. Later Darling reappeared with a creditable third-placed finish at Epsom earlier this month and he is entitled to respect in a first time-hood, while Frantanck steps up to the mile following a staying-on third over shorter on debut and he rates a danger to all.

Race Summary PRIMO BACIO was mixing it at the top table last year and looks to have been found an ideal starting point for her seasonal bow. The Ed Walker-trained four-year-old was an impressive three-length winner on her last attempt in Listed company at York and may be too classy for her rivals here. The unexposed Zanbaq was a cosy winner on her only start at Kempton last year and receives a handy 14lb weight-for-age allowance. Bashkirova steps back down in trip after her defeat at Doncaster in November and is respected.

Race Summary CARADOC may not be the most straightforward in terms of tactics, but on his day he is well capable and the son of Camelot proved that once more when staying on late for fifth in the Spring Mile. Runner-up over C&D on his penultimate start, Ed Walker's charge is the selection to go one better with conditions looking ideal. Moktasaab has a 7lb rise to overcome for a comfortable success at Newbury, while course regular You're Hired cannot be ruled out either.

2021 WINNER: FAIRY CAKES 3 9 5 Edward Greatrex 28-1 (Eve Johnson Houghton) 13 ran STEWARDS NOTED: FLINTSTONE:Following its run on 15/4/2022 it was reported that the horse lost a shoe.
STATE LEGEND brushed aside his rivals with consummate ease last time out and the son of Churchill may be able to continue his ascendancy in this contest. Despite receiving an 8lb rise for that victory, Benoit De La Sayette claims a handy 7lb in the saddle and he gets the nod to land the spoils. Le Forban got off the mark on his seasonal reappearance and he rates the most immediate danger, while Flintstone completes the shortlist.
Danger: Le Forban
Win: State Legend
