Midweek Racing Good afternoon and welcome to Goodwood for the second of our Midweek race days. We have seven races this afternoon, the highlight of which is the ten-furlong Foundation Stakes for three-year-olds and upwards, now established as an important feature of this race day and worth over £50,000 in prize money. This Listed contest has been designed to attract both current and emerging high-class performers over a middle distance. High-profile winners of the Foundation Stakes down the years include the superb Twice Over. He followed up his victory with success in the Champion Stakes before winning an Eclipse and the Juddmonte International. More recently, the Richard Hannon-trained Anna Nerium has proved a useful performer at the top level. The supporting card includes the Class 2 Fillies’ Handicap run in memory of Gladys and Ronald Baldwin, contested over one-mile-six furlongs, in addition to two races for three-year-olds and over. The fixture often provides an opportunity to see late-maturing horses, and it is always worth keeping an eye on those who perform well here. We are very grateful to Ryan Canter Club, White Beech Farm, Inkerman, Jackson-Stops, and the family of Gladys and Ronald Baldwin for their support of the racing this afternoon. I hope you have a very good time at Goodwood and I look forward to welcoming you back for our final fixture, the Season Finale on Sunday, 10 October.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse

Season Finale Sunday 10 October Celebrate the last hurrah of the season. Witness seven exciting races including the much anticipated Alderbrook Stakes, where household names from the world of jump racing take up the challenge of riding at Goodwood. The Course Course Characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Position of Starting Stalls Straight Course-on stands side rail. Round Course-on inside rail except 1m 3f & 1m 4f-on outside rail.

Race Summary Age Of Sail represents a trainer in fine form and the son of Frankel demands plenty of respect, but he may be best watched on racecourse debut. With that in mind, marginal preference goes to WAR HORSE, who found one rival too strong at this venue last month. Despite missing the break, the Marco Botti-trained gelding gave a good account on that occasion and this step up in trip may yield further improvement. Andrew Balding has an impeccable record with two-year-olds this year and Schmilsson could also mount a bold bid.

2020 WINNER: HORTZADAR 5 9 2 James Doyle 3-1 (David O’Meara) 5 ran

Race Summary An open-looking contest with several appealing types in the field, not least Kettle Hill, who has been in terrific form over the summer and deservedly got his head back in front at Sandown. The suggestion is IMRAHOR, though, as he ran a stormer on his first run in 279 days at Newbury last month. With Oisin Murphy taking over in the saddle, the son of Kingman can claim the spoils for a second career success. Via Serendipity is interesting going back up in trip, while Pontefract winner Enigmatic could also have a say.

Win: Imrahor

Danger: Kettle Hill

Race Summary A strong race on paper, with most of the runners in good form and plenty still looking capable of better. KING VEGA has returned from a gelding operation looking much more polished, posting a good fifth in Group company before easily breaking his maiden here last time, and the three-year-old is taken to finally deliver on some of his early juvenile promise. Migration has proven progressive in handicaps this year and shouldn’t have any issues operating at this level, while Harrovian has also stepped up recently and cannot be dismissed.

In Memory of Gladys and Ronald Baldwin Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

Gladys was born into a large family in 1920 in Paddington, London and it was during the Second World War, after her brothers had all joined the services, that she found herself as a member of the Women’s Land Army in West Sussex, where she met Ronald Baldwin from Barns Green, who was a member of the RAF Coastal Command. In December 1948, they married at Itchingfield Parish Church. They lived at Silwood House, Barns Green and had three children: Carole, Ian and Sharon, who are here today. Carole and Sharon went on to have families of their own, making Gladys and Ron grandparents and great-grandparents. Ron and Gladys were very happily married for sixty-eight years and in later years, moved to Horsham to a bungalow on St Mark’s Lane, where they stayed for the remainder of their lives together. They passed away, Ron in July 2017 and Gladys in April 2020 and are buried together at Itchingfield. The couple loved coming to Goodwood race meetings, particularly the September meeting near Gladys’ birthday, 26th September. This race and this day are dedicated to their memory.

Race Summary SEA SYLPH ran on well to finish second at Bath on her latest start, bouncing back from a below par effort at Sandown, and the step up in distance may bring about further improvement from William Haggas’ filly. Golden Bugle is capable of better having disappointed at Kempton last month and she is entitled to be in the mix, along with Flower Of Scotland, who won nicely at Leicester when last seen.

JUST THE MAN: Following its run on 11/4/2021 it was reported that the horse was found to have bled.

Race Summary Curtiz will likely prove popular but is vulnerable for a horse carrying 8lb more than last time and taking a step up in grade as well. Mazzuri was third in a Listed race here over further in May 2019 and looks well handicapped, but she has been off the track for over two years which is a concern. If Pat Dobbs can get PLANTADREAM away on level terms then he has every chance if repeating his Epsom third in a better race off 4lb higher in June.

Race Summary Just That Lord is sure to be popular after romping to success at Windsor recently on his first run for the Simon Hodgson team. A 7lb rise seems excessive, though, and preference is for the consistent PASSIONAL, who has only once been outside the first three in her last six starts. She can land the spoils for Stuart Williams and Lorenzo Atzori, while C&D winner Four Adaay and Glamorous Breeze are also respected.
