Family Fun Welcome to the third and final day of our August Bank Holiday racing weekend presented by NOW, where the British Summer Holiday theme continues to provide entertainment for everyone. This afternoon’s programme includes two highly competitive pony races and an exciting renewal of the Group 3 Weatherbys Hamilton Supreme Stakes. There is an opportunity for amateur riders to take centre stage in the Goodwood Amateur Riders’ Handicap run in memory of Gay Kindersley. It was won triumphantly by Guy Mitchell last year, who fulfilled an ambition lasting three decades and made history as the first jockey with one eye to win a horserace in Britain. New records were also achieved last year in the Selling Stakes when Rosa Mystica sold for £38,000 in a race where the winner is offered for sale by public auction in the paddock immediately after the race. If you are joining us for the first t ime t his w eekend, y ou w ill fi nd we ha ve all the fun of the fair with a complimentary fairground, including a carousel, big wheel, and chair-o-plane, as well as the return of the ever-popular petting zoo. The Gordon Enclosure will be a hive of activity for the younger racegoers with entertainments such as live music and the chance to ride a donkey. Our thanks go to NOW who are today’s presenting partner, and the Tote who are our official b etting p artner, i n a ddition W eatherbys H amilton a nd Chichester City. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us and will be able to join us again for Midweek Racing on Tuesday, 7th September.

Today’s Amateur Jockeys' Handicap Stakes is run in memory of Gay Kindersley A former champion amateur jump jockey who later turned to training, Gay was one of the most engaging figures on the racecourse. A natural raconteur born with an easy charm, Gay particularly enjoyed his long association with The Amateur Jockeys Association, making lifelong friends wherever he went. He broke his back twice during his career but continued to ride against doctor’s orders and his last winning ride was in Belgium in 1969. After retiring as an amateur jockey, Gay became an established trainer in Berkshire. His lifelong ambition was to win a Grand National and he came agonisingly close to achieving this when his part-owned Carrickbeg, ridden by his dear friend Lord Oaksey, was caught by Ayala in the final strides of the race in 1963. On retiring from training in 1985, Gay played a full and highly valued role as President of the Amateur Jockeys Association. He will always be remembered with great fondness by all of his many friends for his wonderful sense of humour and utmost humility.

Firth Of Clyde is likely to be popular but it could be worth taking a chance on Shabbab to build on his debut. Richard Hannon is having an excellent season with his 2yos and there was plenty to like about this one at Ffos Las. There are plenty of winning sprinters in his family and he can serve it up to the favourite. SHABBAB

Onassis returns to Goodwood seeking Group breakthrough in Weatherbys Hamilton Supreme Stakes
ONASSIS WINS THE 2020 SANDRINGHAM STAKES AT ROYAL ASCOT
Charlie Fellowes. “She is very well balanced and she has a very good record at Goodwood where seven furlongs is perfect. “The ground is going to be very different to the two times she ran there but she goes on any surface. She won on very quick ground in France last year so she is very versatile. “She has been knocking on the door at winning a Group race and if things fall right and they go a good gallop, then she will go with a massive chance on Sunday.” Onassis won a Listed race at Goodwood last year and on her second visit last month she finished, crossing the line half a length down on Last Empire, but had Highfield Princess in third.
Royal Ascot winner Onassis will return to the scene of a Glorious Goodwood near-miss to launch another attempt at securing the Group victory that will enhance her breeding profile. The four-year-old filly, winner of the Sandringham Handicap last year, will line up in the Group 3 Weatherbys Hamilton Supreme Stakes over the same course and distance as last month’s Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes, in which she finished second. Onassis is among a six-strong field which also includes the Queen’s Tactical, winner of the Free Handicap in the spring, and recent Pontefract Listed winner Double Or Bubble. “She loves Goodwood,” said her Newmarket trainer 46
“They didn’t go quite quick enough,” said Fellowes. “The winner got a dream run through, box seat, perfect Goodwood run, and we just had too much ground to make up and didn’t quite get there. “The form has been well advertised with the filly that finished third running a blinder against Space Blues at York so I think it was probably a decent race. If CHARLIE FELLOWES she reproduces that form she should be TRAINER OF ONASSIS. bang there.” Onassis, owned by Triermore Stud and Peter Stanley, is a daughter of Dubawi out of Jacqueline Quest, the first past the post in the 2010 1,000 Guineas who was demoted to second for interference. Jacqueline Quest was beaten a short head in the Supreme Stakes in 2011. She has won four of her 16 starts and became the second of Fellowes’s three royal meeting winners when striking at 33-1 under Hayley Turner. “She is a very good filly with the kind of pedigree that I don’t often get a chance to train,” said Fellowes. ”She is as tough as anything. She is a pleasure to train with a wonderful attitude. She is a Royal Ascot and dual Listed winner and I am absolutely certain she can win a Group race. “She will definitely be retired at the end of the year. She is worth a lot of money as a broodmare but we would love to win a Group race before then and we have our eyes on hopefully going out with a bang in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp. “That’s a race that should be perfect because often you get plenty of cut in the ground and seven furlongs should be ideal.” Turner has been an ever-present on Onassis in her last eight starts and will be in the saddle again on Sunday. “Hayley has ridden her beautifully, they are tailor made for each other,” said Fellowes. “She is very good on a hold-up horse. She is exceptionally good at riding one patiently which is not an easy thing to do. They are a very good partnership.” By Jon Lees

Betty Crean L A can take advantage of bottom-weight. I really like the way she won her maiden at Sandown and could prove to be ahead of her mark of 81. She found one too good at Windsor last time but she’s clearly still learning and this step up to 1m4f could bring out the best in her. BETTY CREAN L A
