WELCOME & OFFICIALS

WELCOME

A warm welcome to our Aldiss Easter Monday Raceday Today a special thanks goes to our generous sponsors Aldiss, who offer Norfolk’s widest range of indoor and garden furniture both at stores in Fakenham and Norwich as well as online – www.aldiss.com, Fisher Electrical Contractors, The Butitifant Family and Bruce Towers and Sons Mechanical Engineers.

Our small fun fair is here again in the centre of the course and we encourage young and old to venture down for some fun. Please use the crossings safely and keep an eye on any little ones as we all know they sometimes get distracted and have the ability to wander, and we want to keep everyone safe.

Plans are progressing for The Revel Festival, taking place at Fakenham Racecourse on Saturday 27 July This promises to be a great evening of live music, with headline act The Feeling supported by The Rick Parfitt Jnr Band, who recently sold out two dates in Milan, Izo Fitzroy, Matha Gunn and a guest DJ. Children 14+ are welcome and there are caravan and camping pitches available for those who wish to stay over and explore the delights of Norfolk.

The North and West Norfolk Hunt Point to Point is taking place on 21 April here at Fakenham and worth a visit. Tickets are £12.50 in advance online or £15 on the day You may have noticed the horses who lead our race horses down to the start, it is a tradition that goes back many years and these horses and riders join us each race day, rain or shine, from the West Norfolk Hunt.

We then have our final two race meets of the season – Gamble Plant Norfolk National Day on 7 May and our Jarrold Ladies Day on Sunday 2 June. Tickets can be purchased at a discounted price in advance and we also have some hospitality options now online –www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk.

Have a wonderful day today, fingers crossed the weather is kind and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

Official BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM

Friday 15th March

Our Woodfordes Raceday saw seven exciting races take place throughout the day, with some impressive performances and great finishes on show.

The opening race of the day was the maiden which saw Bluegrass comfortably justify his support in the market. Going off at 5/6, the Stuart Edmunds trained gelding travelled strongly throughout the contest and despite a couple of minor jumping errors, he kept on very well to comfortably score his first win for nearly three years.

Five went to the post for the day’s second contest and it was the Micky Hammond trained Ballylinch who picked up the win.The gelding had run decently when fourth at Market Rasen last time out but was let down by his jumping but that wasn’t an issue here under a great ride from Brian Hughes. He was clear approaching the last and kept on well to win by six and a half lengths ahead of Elleon in second while the favourite Stringtoyourbow could only manage third.

Only two completed in the day’s third contest, the Revel Music Festival @ Fakenham Racecourse 27th July Handicap Chase. Of those two it was

the well-backed Ballyrashane who scored the win for trainer Christian Williams. Going off as the clear favourite in the betting despite not being seen for over three months, the gelding certainly didn’t look rusty. In fact, he seemed to relish the step up in trip to 3m 5f, jumping well and finishing comfortably ahead of Conceroe in second. He could potentially be one to watch going forwards over these longer trips.

Fakenham RA CEC OURSE

DON’T MISS OUR NEXT MEETING

Gamble Plant Norfolk National Raceday Tuesday 7th May. SEE YOU THERE!

Neil Mulholland’s Double Powerful produced a strong performance to deny 8/11 shot Fever Dream in the fourth. The gelding looked keen early on but Brendan Powell did well to calm him down and stick to the game plan. Held up in the rear and with some less than fluent jumping he looked unlikely to be star performer but finished tremendously to get ahead, finding more than Fever Dream to get the win with the surprise 22/1 shot Sadie Hill in third.

The mares’ handicap was up next, and it was Birdhouse who got the win, a second winner of the day for Stuart Edmunds. It was a great ride from Charlie Hammond, taking her into a prominent position and keeping pressure on the early leader Foursome. She made her move from two out and was soon well clear, extending that lead to an impressive nine lengths when she crossed the line.

Up next was the day’s penultimate contest, the Fakenham Silver Cup and it was Tapley who picked up the win. Trained by Suzy Smith, the seven-yearold gelding hadn’t been seen since an impressive second in a Kempton handicap on the 27th December but still looked in fine form here. Jockey Elizabeth Gale keeping her in touch with the leaders before making a late charge. A minor error over the last raised a doubt but she was always doing enough to pick up the win.

Rebel Dawn Rising ended the day in style as he picked up the win in the Queens Cup Grassroots Open Hunters’ Chase for trainer David Kemp. Ridden on the day by Mr Dale Peters, his jumping lacked the fluency you would expect from the veteran, and he slowed dramatically approaching the last. He rallied back well in the final straight, storming back past Knight In Dubai to win in emphatic fashion.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
