WELCOME & OFFICIALS
Fakenham RACECOURSE
WELCOME A very warm welcome to this Sky Bet Raceday and a Happy New Year. We are very grateful for the generous sponsorship of todays’ races by Sky Bet – thank you very much indeed. I apologise to everyone - owners, trainers, the public, officials and staff for the abandoned race meeting on 2nd January 2024. This season has been the most difficult in my 26 years at Fakenham. The weather has constantly been against us and it has been incredibly stressful for everyone, but it is the wettest winter on record for the entire country and that definitely brings new challenges. Joining us today we are thrilled to welcome the Blackmores, who owned and trained our course record breaker, Cool Roxy. They are here signing their recently launched book – The Fakenham Favourite. This is their story as small trainers and of this amazing little horse, with all the highs and lows of their journey over the years. You can find them in the cabin at the end of the Grandstand, near the Parade ring, so do drop in to say hello. Looking forward, we are excited to launch our summer Revel festival, which takes place on Saturday 27 July. This is the first time we have hosted a music festival and we hope this will grow year on year. Our headline act The Feeling are supported by The Rick Parfitt Jnr Band, Izo FitzRoy and MarthaGunn plus a guest DJ. More information and tickets are available at revelfestival.co.uk. Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2024 is still available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. If you would like more information or have any questions, please call into the racecourse office today or visit www. fakenhamracecourse.co.uk where membership can be bought online. Also, keep an eye on our website for additional events we are running throughout the year. Finally, I would like to thank and welcome the ITV Racing Team today to our race meeting. The two feature races are being shown on ITV 3 this afternoon – that has not happened at Fakenham for over 30 years – so thank you for visiting us today and I hope your day goes well. LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM
Fakenham RACECOURSE
Tuesday 19th December
Our final meeting of 2023 saw seven competitive races take centre stage, with testing conditions making it a battle of attrition for every competitor.
West Warhorse continued Ben Brookhouse’s fine season by taking our first contest. The five-year-old took a keen hold under Alice Stevens, who was taking off a useful 5lb for connections. The pair sat in touch with the leaders before making stylish headway to take the lead three out. After being shaken-up he went further clear to score by an emphatic 16 lengths to Ballyvaughan Bay. Jacks Touch was given a positive ride by Daryl Jacob to win our second race of the day. Sarah Humphrey’s mare had previously been disappointing over course distance but benefited from a 2lb ease in the weights and a change of tactics. She looked to be in command jumping the last but wandered on the run in and stuck on gamely to deny the fast finishing Lincoln Lyn. Our Nel completed the placings and despite looking like she was going to play a big part two out, could find no extra up in trip.
It didn’t take Dan Skelton long to get into the winners’ enclosure, with a win in the Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. Lady Berlais made all under an enterprising front running ride by Charlie Todd. The blinkers look to have made a world of difference and she claimed her first win in 12 starts at our last meeting. She still looks to be well weighted and can follow it up in this sort of company. Lady Gwen never managed to land a blow in second.
DON’T M I S S O U R N E X T M E ETI NG Payne Crop Nutrition Raceday Friday 16th February. SE E YOU THERE! Gold Clermont struck gold in our fourth contest under Sean Bowen. She was in receipt of weight from the boys and made it count to win by an eased down 14 lengths. Sean sat in the rear of the field on the Andy Irvine trained seven-year-old for most of the contest. They made good headway before the 9th and took the lead jumping the 18th. The race was all but over jumping the second last and she looked to relish the testing underfoot conditions.
Venetia Williams has been in flying form of late, so it was no surprise to see her get a winner on the board. Miss Lucy Turner has been riding out of her skin this season and delivered another winner for Venetia in the form of Georges Saint. They led narrowly for much of the contest and despite being headed, Lucy kept her cool and the pair rallied before three out to lead again. They kept on well up the run in to win by 12 lengths, to continue the wide margin finishes.
The loveable For Pleasure wasted no time in getting back to winning ways for new trainer Olly Murphy. The eight-year-old had always been a very talented animal but looked to have lost his way slightly for Alex Hales. The change in stable looks to have the desired effect as he scooted clear under Sean Bowen to win by 16 lengths. Sean won’t ride many easier winners and made it two wins from as many rides.
Our finale went to James Owen and Lilly Pinchin. Edison Kent was ridden as though he was ahead of the handicapper and the wind operation looks to have done the trick. They were on the outer throughout and made eye-catching headway before the ninth hurdle. They joined the leader two from home before leading jumping the last. The eventual winning distance coming in at a mighty 23 lengths.

BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. 21
