WELCOME & OFFICIALS

Fakenham RACECOURSE

WELCOME A very warm welcome to this Sky Bet Raceday. We are very grateful for the generous sponsorship of today’s races by Sky Bet – thank you very much indeed. There has been much going on at the racecourse over the summer months. The landscaping and a new entrance to The Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure has been completed, toilets have been refurbished and a considerable number of trees felled next to the members’ car park and behind the stables to reduce the corvidae issues we have and to enable a large, ground mounted solar panel array to be installed in November. Once up and running the solar will predominantly provide all the electrical requirements for the racecourse, thus cutting CO2 emissions and helping the racecourse achieve carbon neutral status as soon as possible. Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2024 is available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. If you would like more information on membership please visit us in the Adrian Flux Bar, Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure, today or visit www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk where membership can be bought online. From all of us at Fakenham we wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you here with us on 2nd January 2024. LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM

Fakenham RACECOURSE

Tuesday 21st November

Our mid-November meeting was a resounding success, with seven enthralling races taking centre stage on what was a sunny Autumn afternoon.

The meeting kicked off with a win for the Dan Skelton trained Virginia Lodge, who rode out an easy winner. Ridden on the day by Fergus Gillard, the threeyear-old filly looked lively throughout. She took the lead without issue just before the second to last hurdle and stormed clear to win by an impressive eleven lengths, notching the first win of her fledgling career. The Jamie Snowden trained Francina took second, proving no match for the winner while the well-backed favourite on the day, Circle Of Hope could only manage third after a mistake when jumping the fifth. Four runners contested the second race of the day, with Ellis Collier getting the job done aboard Call Of The Loon ahead of Lilly Pinchin and Guguss Collonges in second. The winner was not the favourite in the market but was racing prominent throughout and the Christian Williams trained gelding raced well. Roger Teal’s Guguss Collonges pressed him throughout the contest, but couldn’t find enough to justify his strong market support and so Call Of

The Loon took the win by three quarters of a length. Five went to post for the day’s third contest, the Novice’s Handicap Hurdle as the duo of Lucy Wadham and Bryony Frost took the win with For Gina. The five-year-old mare was well-backed in the market, racing prominently throughout the contest. Frost kept her in touch with the early leaders and despite some less than fluent jumping she took

DON’T M I S S O U R N E X T M E ETI NG TUESDAY 2ND JANUARY SE E YOU THERE!

the lead from two out before really kicking on to win by a massive eleven lengths. Redbridge Rosie took second for Sarah Humphrey. It was another favourite taking the win in the fourth as well. The James Owen and Lilly Pinchin combination coming up trumps as My Gift To You ran out a comfortable winner. Her second winner of the day, Lilly Pinchin was in fine form here, doing well to keep her mount going despite his issues with the fences. He took the lead approaching the last despite another mistake over the jump and he still had plenty left in the tank for the final run-in. School For Scandal and Jacks Touch rounded out the podium positions. Ip Up ended the short run of winning favourites when she took home the days fifth contest. Trained by Jedd O’Keeffe and ridden here by Craig Nichol, the mare was not particularly fancied in the market but produced a stunning performance to win by a massive 18

lengths. She kept in touch with the leaders throughout before making her move to the front shortly before two out. Her jumping was top notch and she glided past her rivals to win easily ahead of On Cloud Nine in second. Our penultimate contest saw the Sarah Humphrey trained Templier pick up the win under a strong ride from James Best. Another who was not particularly fancied in the betting, the experienced ten-year-old proved too much for his rivals and scored his first win of the season. The well-backed Up For Appeal was unable to justify his market support and could only manage fourth for Christian Williams. Three took to the track for the days final contest as the well-backed Tramuntana (5/6 in the betting) justified his strong support in fine style. Olly Murphy’s newcomer proved far too much for the competition as the four-year-old winner rode out a 17-length winner pretty much unchallenged.

BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The Nar Valley Bloodhounds hunt humans for fun and the activity is called “clean boot” hunting. On a hunt day there are up to six runners who set off 15 minutes before the bloodhounds on a prearranged route which the huntsman, who controls the bloodhounds, has agreed with the runners. Before setting off, the runners go into a trailer with the hounds to be ‘sniffed up’ as the hounds follow the natural sent of the runners. There are normally twelve hounds in the pack on a hunt day and the horse mounted hunt members follow the hounds and are controlled by the field master. Hunting takes place in the winter months on a Sunday, lasts about three hours, covers about 9 miles and always finishes with tea, cake and banter!! Runners, hounds, horses and riders need to be fit and often Fakenham’s clerk of the course David Hunter and his wife Rachel are the human quarry!!

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Copshill Lad (IRE), 7-2 The Wise Traveller (IRE), 6-1 William Ewart (IRE), 13-2 Tiny Tantrum (IRE), 8-1 Edison Kent (IRE), 12-1 Hillfinch (GB), 16-1 Beaufort West (IRE), 40-1 Rolling River (IRE)

The vote goes to THE WISE TRAVELLER, who made every post a winning one back in this sphere at Huntingdon on his second start for this yard and a 5lb rise may not be enough to prevent him from going in again. Copshill Lad is 0-7 over hurdles but he has lost little caste in defeat the last PLAY SMARTER twice and is second choice. Tiny Tantrum will be a threat if ready to roll following eight months off and William Ewart also enters calculations. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.THE WISE TRAVELLER (IRE) 2.COPSHILL LAD (IRE) 3.TINY TANTRUM (IRE)

Don’t forget to bet on the 3:20 at WINCANTON and 3:30 at CATTERICK BRIDGE.

BEST TURNED OUT Representatives from EACH Business Circle will kindly present a memento to the winning owner and will also judge and present a prize of £50 to the person in charge of the best turned out horse in this race.
