There has been much going on at the racecourse over the summer months. The landscaping and a new entrance to The Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure has been completed, toilets have been refurbished and a considerable number of trees felled next to the members’ car park and behind the stables to reduce the corvidae issues we have and to enable a large, ground mounted solar panel array to be installed in November. Once up and running the solar will predominantly provide all the electrical requirements for the racecourse, thus cutting CO2 emissions and helping the racecourse achieve carbon neutral status as soon as possible. Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2024 is available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. Our rearranged meeting last Monday was a resounding success, with seven competitive races taking centre stage on what was a sunny Autumn afternoon.
The meeting kicked off with a win for James Owen and Lilly Pinchin. Four runners contested the juvenile hurdle, with Emma Lavelle’s Grain Of Hope being sent off the hot favourite. Royal Athena took a keen hold under Lilly Pinchin and sat prominent for the early stages of the race. Coming down the home straight she took up the running from Grain Of Hope, who despite battling back well, couldn’t get up to deny Royal Athena. The two pulled a mile clear of the third and are a couple of nice types to follow for the season. Eight runners contested the second race of the day, with Harry Reed and Good Time Ahead getting the job done from Sailed Away and Ciaran Gethings. The winner was relatively unfancied in the market but was clearly sharpened up from his unconventional opener on the all-weather at Kempton a month prior. He’s not always been the easiest to get right but Jim & Suzi best have done an excellent job in getting him back to winning ways. Sailed Away wasn’t the most fluent at his fences, which no
doubt cost him in the finish. Veteran Somekindofstar ran an admirable race to finish third after being a tad keen in the early stages. The first of our chases went the way of Scene One for the Lucy Wadham, Bryony Frost combination. The sevenyear-old took control of the contest jumping the final fence and very much picked up where he left off when winning last season at Warwick.
DON’T M I S S O U R N E X T M E ETI NG TUESDAY 19TH DECEMBER SE E YOU THERE! He jumped well on chasing debut and is no doubt on an upward trajectory. Icaque De L’isle put in a gutsy effort on return and will no doubt come on for the outing. The omission of three fences made the run in a testing affair and it was Star Legend who looked to relish it the most as he charged home to score by 1 ½ lengths. In the process, he gave trainer and jockey combination of James Owen and Lilly Pinchin a double on the day. The manner of his victory would suggest he very much needs every yard of the trip and could be one for further next time out. Colonel Whizz put in a significantly improved effort, with the extra distance bringing about a fair amount excitement for future outings. Gavin Sheehan achieved his first win of the afternoon on Crem Fresh. It looked to be a gruelling affair that saw only four of the ten finish but Barry Brennan’s runner loved conditions to
win impressively to Mistral Nell. Our penultimate race of the day went to Christian Williams. Talented claimer Ellis Collier made virtually all aboard the eight-year-old and despite being headed in the run in, rallied gamely to just deny Bryony Frost and Lucy Wadham their second win of the afternoon. It was our most exciting finish of the afternoon with both horses looking likely to go close again next time out. While our penultimate race was the most exciting, this performance was the most impressive as James Davies looked a mere passenger on Ami Bondhu for Nick Gifford. The pair did take a keen hold, but it looked to have no adverse effects as they entered the home straight. James Davies always looked to have his rivals covered and it was a vastly improved effort than his run at Kempton last season. He looks to be a mightily impressive prospect for connections.

BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys It is a real pleasure to be sponsoring two races across the card this afternoon at Fakenham, including the Weatherbys Hamilton Novices’ Handicap Chase, a Class 5 event staged over 2m5f in which a small but select field of five go to post. The weights are headed by Sarah Humphrey’s Jacks Touch who, although winless in six starts over hurdles, made a really encouraging start to life over fences when fourth on chase debut at Huntingdon last month. From a mark of 100, the eight-year-old was beaten under four lengths by the eventual winner
School For Scandal has an experience edge over this field and could put that to good use here. and may well have gotten closer if not for a final fence mistake when ridden to press the leaders. The handicapper has generously dropped her 2lbs for that effort, and this is as good a chance as any to shed her maiden tag under rules. The James Owen stable has been in fine form of late, operating at a 21% strike rate over the past fortnight, and his My Gift To You is one of only two chase winners in the field here. The five-year-old got off the mark in ready fashion on stable debut WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
back in July, surging to a four-length victory in a Southwell handicap hurdle from a mark of 70. He then backed that up with a smooth last-to-first win on chase debut at Worcester, coming home powerfully under a cool ride from Harry Cobden and was worth a lot more than the winning margin suggests. Despite being a beaten favourite on all three starts back over hurdles since, he has run with credit in the places, and can continue progressing now reverted to the bigger obstacles following the promise he showed on chase debut. The other in the field with a victory over fences on his record is Joe Tickle’s School For Scandal, who got off the mark over fences at the eleventh time of asking when staying on well for a four-length success at Taunton on his final start of the last campaign. The eightyear-old has an experience edge over this field and could put that to good use here up just 4lbs for that latest win, but he hasn’t proved the most consistent horse to follow. Calidad is now 0-13 under rules and has switched to Mrs Lawney Hill since last seen. The seven-yearold has some decent form over hurdles that would put him in the mix here, chasing home the smart Datsalrightgino in a novice hurdle and placing off a mark of 91 at Hereford in January, but has yet to make his presence felt over fences
under rules. He did register a widemargin Point-to-Point victory in April and has a reduced chase mark of 86 though. Seamus Mullins’ fouryear-old Elpologreg has showed little in two novice hurdles this term and makes the switch to fences for his chase debut here. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. VISITORS AGREE TO: • Submit to a search of their persons, bags and vehicles; • Comply at all times with the instructions of the officers and management of the Company, the officers and stewards of the British Horseracing Authority, security staff and police. • Observe the racecourse rules of betting: only visitors carrying valid betting badges and occupying an authorised pitch may offer or lay bets. • Observe the rules and terms and conditions governing other commercial activities on the racecourse: only authorised vendors are permitted to trade. • Abide by the racecourse dress code which is as follows: smart casual attire for hospitality guests (e.g. no trainers) and for others to dress respectfully (e.g. no bare chests). The management of the racecourse reserve the right to refuse entry to any person it regards, at its sole discretion, is in breach of the dress code. THE FOLLOWING ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED: • Drunken and abusive behaviour, foul language or the possession of illegal substances; • The display of any signage or branding and the distribution of any promotional or advertising material; • Obstruction of any of the racecourse’s gangways, stairways, entrances and exits and unauthorised climbing on any structure within the racecourse; • Access to unauthorised areas of the racecourse; • Bringing on to the racecourse any of the following: - Any items of food or drink including picnics. The exception is that these items can be consumed in the car parks, but not in the enclosures; - Any flags, banners or other such articles which may distract visitors or the horses; - Tents or gazebos without prior consent of Fakenham Racecourse. - Any dangerous chemicals or substances hazardous to health or machinery; - Ball games i.e. football or rugby; LIMITATION OF LIABILITY To the maximum extent permissible by law the Company shall not, nor shall any of its officers, managers or staff, in any circumstances, be liable for any loss, damage, cost or expense or any consequential or indirect loss or damage of any kind suffered by visitors to the racecourse, including but not limited to any loss or damage to personal items and vehicles belonging to visitors while on or about the racecourse.
