WELCOME & OFFICIALS

Fakenham RACECOURSE

WELCOME A very warm welcome to this Sky Bet Raceday. We are very grateful for the generous sponsorship of today’s race meeting by Sky Bet – thank you very much indeed. I am sorry that the opening race meeting of the season on 20th October was called off due to excessive rain and then, even more unfortunately, having to abandon the meeting last week on 1st November after the first race. No one at Fakenham can ever recall a race meeting at Fakenham being called off after racing had started and I hope it will never happen again. On 1st November, just as the jockeys mounted for the first race the heavens opened and we had the most dreadful rain storm for 15 minutes. So much water landed and lay on the track that is created a slippery surface and after a stewards’ enquiry, that involved officials, jockeys and trainers, it was sadly decided that on the grounds of jockey and horse welfare the meeting could no longer continue. There has been much going on at the racecourse over the summer months. The landscaping and a new entrance to The Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure has been completed, toilets have been refurbished and a considerable number of trees felled next to the members’ car park and behind the stables to reduce the corvidae issues we have and to enable a large, ground mounted solar panel array to be installed in November. Once up and running the solar will predominantly provide all the electrical requirements for the racecourse, thus cutting CO2 emissions and helping the racecourse achieve carbon neutral status as soon as possible. Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2024 is available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. If you would like more information on membership please call into the racecourse office today or visit www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk where membership can be bought online. BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
