WELCOME & OFFICIALS

Fakenham RACECOURSE

WELCOME A very warm welcome to everyone to the inaugural Local Residents Raceday. I am very sorry that the opening race meeting on 20th October had to be called off due to excessive rainfall but we had no choice with over 55mm of rain that fell that day meaning parts of the track were water logged, unsafe and emergency vehicles would have struggled to get to all parts of the track. I know you will agree that jockey and horse welfare must always come first in racing. There has been much going on at the racecourse over the summer months. The landscaping and a new entrance to The Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure has been completed, toilets have been refurbished and a considerable number of trees felled next to the members’ car park and behind the stables to reduce the corvidae issues we have and to enable a large, ground mounted solar panel array to be installed in November. Once up and running the solar will predominantly provide all the electrical requirements for the racecourse, thus cutting CO2 emissions and helping the racecourse achieve carbon neutral status as soon as possible. The new bar building in The Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure will be officially named today by Lisa and Laura Flux as The Adrian Flux Bar. We are very grateful for the generosity of Adrian Flux Insurance and The Flux Family for the sponsorship of this building and on behalf of the Norfolk institutions and sporting facilities that Adrian Flux supports we say a very big thank you indeed. Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2024 is available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. If you would like more information on membership please call into the racecourse office today or visit www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk where membership can be bought online. LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM

Fakenham RACECOURSE

Sunday 4th June

With the new season kicking off today. It helps to look back at the last time we raced, which was over four months ago. Neil King signed off with a double while Harry Cobden got one of his own in the saddle.

Our last meeting began with a competitive looking three runner affair. Mystic Man was sent off favourite under the talented claimer Ben Bromley. The pair kept things simple from the front to score by an impressive eleven lengths. Rebel Leader was sent off the outsider of the field and despite sitting in second for much of the contest, was unable to land a blow. Kym Eyre was only marginally behind Mystic Man in the betting but failed to land a blow after being outpaced. Alexandra Dunn’s charge Sermando wasn’t the quickest over the last hurdle but already had the race in the bag under Miss Fern O’Brien. The nine-year-old clearly benefited from a change of scenery after swapping Jonjo O’Neill for the Dunn’s operation and was certainly ahead of the handicapper. Never No Trouble ran an admirable race back in second but ran into a better handicapped rival on the day.

Go Fox brought home the first leg of Neil King’s double. The experienced chaser capitalised from a sliding mark to land our third race. Uncle O finished second but did have excuses when being hampered at the last at a crucial stage. It was a promising return after a 185-day break but he has only won once to date. Cloudy Wednesday found the trip on the short side but stayed on nicely enough to take third place.

DON’T M I S S O U R N E X T M E ETI NG TUESDAY 21ST NOVEMBER SE E YOU THERE! A spin over the minimum trip awaited the four geldings in the next. Neil King’s short priced runner State Of Bliss completed the double under an astute ride by the seasoned Jack Quinlan. He wasn’t the most fluent at some of his hurdles but was clearly some way ahead of his rivals to dispatch them with relative ease. He had shown plenty of ability on the flat, so the win didn’t come as too much of a surprise. Thorpeness failed to settle and it ultimately cost him in the closing stages. If he learns to settle they’ll be plenty of fun to be had with him over slightly further. The feature race of the day went to Evan Williams and Harry Cobden. Their task was aided when Name In Lights was pulled up following a bad mistake four out. Sopran Thor was also pulled up after the same fence and we were left with a match between Hatcher and eventual winner Quoi De Neuf.

Hatcher put up a game fight despite nearly throwing off Tristan Durrell but eventually went down by a neck in a thrilling finish. Too Friendly claimed our penultimate race from Nevendon. They came home strung out after a good early pace set by Too Friendly and Glimpse Of Gold. The latter over-raced for most of the race and ended up coming fourth, which means Too Friendly’s effort can be marked up. If Karl’s Berg Did sent Harry Cobden and punters home happy after they just edged out rival For Gina in the straight. The son of Fame And Glory sat in touch with the leaders for much of the contest before being ridden when out paced three out. He made good headway after jumping the second to eventually lead at the last, before pulling away nicely to score.

BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Though SAISISSANTE hasn’t shown much in two starts for present connections, including on her hurdles bow at Stratford when last seen in August, she could be worth chancing with headgear refitted. Indeed, her three efforts in this combination of blinkers and tongue strap on the Flat were among her PLAY SMARTER very best efforts in that sphere. If Majestic Jameela avoids the mistakes she made when third to Grain of Hope at Ludlow she may well reverse the placings with that rival on 7lb better terms here.
