Welcome

A very warm welcome to everyone to today’s Jarrold Ladies’ Day and we hope that you have a great day of racing, that you catch up with old friends and colleagues and make new ones. We are very grateful for the very generous sponsorship of today’s race meeting by Jarrold who have sponsored Ladies Day since 2017 – thank you very much indeed.

We have also upgraded the jockeys’ changing rooms, weighing room and increased the size of the Owners’ and Trainers’ Cool Roxy Bar For those of you with eagle eyes you will note that all the chase fences and hurdles have been changed from orange tops and bottoms to white and the hurdles are now made of foam pads and not birch. These are very positive changes that should benefit the welfare of the horses.

Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2023 is available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. Tuesday 9th May

We hosted six races in our previous meeting on Tuesday 9th May, where jockey Michael Nolan completed a double during another excellent day of racing.

Our last meeting got off to an emphatic start with the Syd Hosietrained Way Out romping to victory by a mightly impressive 15 lengths for jockey Michael Nolan over State Of Bliss in second. The six-year-old made all and was ridden after two out. The son of Getaway kept on and went comfortably clear after the last. There was plenty of support for Copshill Lad but the market favourite fell at the last. Fulgurant came third behind State Of Bliss. There was another comfortable victory in the following race with the favourite Jigginstown King justifying the market support to win by five lengths ahead of Abaya Du Mathan in second. Trained by Oliver Signy and ridden by Cillin Leonard, the six-year-old made all and despite not jumping particularly fluently, had enough to fend off the danger from the David Pipe runner Ben Brody finished in third.

It was a much closer affair in the third race of the day with the Seamus Mullins-trained Baby Sham holding on to deny the favourite Scudamore by a head. The fiveyear-old ridden by Nolan, who completed a double for the day, chased the leader Scudamore, and kept on to lead inside the final 110 yeards. The daughter of Sir Percy was flat out but found just enough to take the honours in the Autism In

Racing Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. Lighthouse Mill was third.

The fourth race saw Gavin cruise to success for trainer Joe Ponting and jockey Jack Quinlan. The five-year-old son of Bated Breath justified the support to win by an emphatic 16 lengths over Hey Bob in second. The gelding took a keen hold early on and amde headway to lead before three from the finish. He then went well clear from two out before being eased during the run-in. Gavin has been in good form this year, winning twice and finishing second in three outings.

The penultimate race of the day saw the David Pipe-trained Duc De Beauchene clinch success in the Snellings Norfolk National Handicap Chase under a smart ride from Fergus Gillard. The tenyear-old travelled particularly strongly and was prominent during the middle stages. He made the challenge during the home turn and kept on well to edge out Jony Max by half-a-length.

Wake Up Early finished third for Dr Richard Newland and Cillin Leonard.

The meeting was then concluded by a 49 length victory for Raleagh Flora who was far too good for the remainder of the field. This Hunters’ Chase saw the favourite show exactly why there was plenty of support for him. Trained by Andrew Pennock and ridden by Mr Charlie Marshall, the pair enjoyed a very easy success with the eight-year-old gelding taking the lead before three out and only continuing to increase that lead approaching the closing stages. For Rita was the closest in second and Fiddler Of Dooney in third.

Official BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
