Fakenham RA CECOURS E

WELCOME

A very warm welcome to everyone to today’s Snellings Norfolk National Raceday and we hope that you have a great day of racing, that you catch up with old friends and colleagues and make new ones. We are very grateful for the very generous sponsorship of today’s race meeting and of the Norfolk National by Snellings – this is the fifth year Snellings have sponsored – thank you very much indeed. We are also delighted to be hosting an educational day for pupils from The Duke of Lancaster Academy in Fakenham and to be working in conjunction with Autism in Racing and Racing to School to provide a great experience for the pupils.

We have also upgraded the jockeys’ changing rooms, weighing room and increased the size of the Owners’ and Trainers’ Cool Roxy Bar For those of you with eagle eyes you will note that all the chase fences and hurdles have been changed from orange tops and bottoms to white and the hurdles are now made of foam pads and not birch. These are very positive changes that should benefit the welfare of the horses.

Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2023 is available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. If you would like more information on membership please call into the racecourse office today or visit www.fakenhamracecourse. co.uk where membership can be bought online.

We hope that you have all had a fantastic Coronation weekend and here at Fakenham we are immensely proud and humbled that The King is the racecourse Patron – Long Live the King.

Best Wishes,

Fakenham RA CECOURS E WELCOME & OFFICIALS

Monday 10th April

We hosted 7 races last month with the feature being the Aldiss Furnishing Stores Veterans’ Handicap Chase, where Boldmere did just enough to clutch the lions share of the spoils.

The days racing began with the Juvenile Maiden Hurdle, which featured just the two runners. The clear favourite was the Milton Harris trained Havaila at a tiny 1/8, and the four-year-old certainly justified that support when scoring by a monstrous 75 lengths to secure the first victory of his career at the eleventh attempt. He went clear from the fourth and despite a mistake on the last, jockey Mitchell Bastyan was able to ease his ride on the run-in. Overstate began to lose touch with one circuit to go before tailing off after a mistake when three out but was still able to complete.

It was back-to-back wins for the favourites as Gary Moore’s Sopran Tor clutched the win in the second, though the eight-yearold was the only horse to complete. Sir Apollo fell early on allowing Enduring Love to take the lead for the early goings of the race. Olly Murphy’s gelding was put under a lot of pressure however and began making mistakes before falling at the thirteenth allowing Sopran Tor to take the lead. Fancy Foundations was outpaced before falling at the last.

Luna Dora broke the run of favourites in the third, scoring in the Cecil & Sheila Buttifant Memorial Mare’s Handicap. It was an impressive performance as well, she travelled strongly throughout, and with the exception of an awkward jump over the fifth, she looked very comfortable, marking the first win of her career The joint favourites Glance At me and East End Girl came in second and third respectively, proving no match for the winner.

The fourth race saw a similarly impressive performance when Swaffham Bulbeck scored by a huge fourteen lengths. The Stuart Edmunds trained gelding was travelling very well throughout, featuring prominently before taking the lead from three out. He hit the last two hurdles but was still able to pull well clear. Small Bad Bob came in second after a decent performance but was no match for the winner The favourite, Thirtyfourstitches could only manage third.

Next up was the feature race of the day, and it was Boldmere who took the win in the Veteran’s Handicap Chase. Alex Hales’ veteran gelding was not the most fluent with his jumping but was always doing enough to hold off a late charge from Fidux to get the win. Alan King’s Fidux put in a strong effort but was just beaten by a neck. Cyclop was running along well before falling at the fifteenth.

The penultimate race of the day saw Janika score the win in the Queen’s Cup Open Hunter’s Chase. The ten-year-old

taking a break from points to record his first win since November 2019. It was a good performance from him, but he was helped by mistakes from his rivals. Firak came in second, but his jumping was suspect throughout and was unable to make much of an impression in the latter stages while Dickie Diver looked outmatched throughout. Twilight Girl and the favourite, Rebel Dawn Rising were both unable to complete.

The days finale was the bumper and saw the four-year-old Birdhouse record the first win of her fledgling career, in just the second time of asking. Ciaran Gethings kept her held up in the rear, biding his time before switching left and taking the lead inside the final furlong, ultimately winning by a length and a quarter Floating Line came in second, a position he held throughout the contest while the favourite Young At Heart came in third, unable to catch her rivals.

Official BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PLAY SMARTER

SCUDAMORE was a cosy winner at Stratford last month for in-form Jennie Candlish and a 7lb rise may not prevent him going in again. The lightly-raced Champagne Town is an interesting contender on his handicap debut and might be the one to give the selection most to do ahead of Jukebox d’Eddy.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
