A very warm welcome to everyone to today’s Country Food Trust Raceday, to our race sponsors, our corporate guests and Norfolk shoots. This is always a special day with Cheltenham sharing the racing with us and I am sure today’s races will be equally exciting both here and in Gloucestershire.
Please make time today to find out about The Country Food Trust. It is a fabulous charity that enables British game meet to be processed and distributed via food banks and specialist charities to those who are most in need of wholesome, nutritious food. It is the perfect match for those who can afford to shoot helping those who struggle to feed themselves. The CFT information stand is behind the old grandstand. Please also support the CFT by buying raffle tickets to be in with a chance to win a magnificent Double Magnum of Chateau Trillol.
We have also upgraded the jockeys’ changing rooms, weighing room and increased the size of the Owners’ and Trainers’ Cool Roxy Bar. For those of you with eagle eyes you will note that all the chase fences and hurdles have been changed from orange tops and bottoms to white and the hurdles are now made of foam pads and not birch. These are very positive changes that should benefit the welfare of the horses.
Annual Membership of Fakenham for 2023 is available and represents extremely good value for money at £250 for double and £160 for single membership. If you would like more information on membership please call into the racecourse office today or visit www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk where membership can be bought online.
Once again thank you for coming racing today I hope you have a fun and successful day’s racing.

We hosted 7 races last month - good, good to soft in places - and Sergeant Wilson won the Class three, Racing TV Maiden Hurdle Race over two miles which looked to be a competitive feature race.
The day got off to an impressive start as Dev Of Tara winning with ease by two lengths over Ya Know Yaseff in second. The fancied San Pedro was outpaced yet kept on well. Sadly, he didn’t have enough to match the leading pair finishing eleven lengths behind second. The Olly Murphy trained Dev Of Tara with Lewis Stones on board was prominent in the early stages. Before he dropped back until he went again approaching the second last. Under a great ride from Stones he went on to win with ease.
The wins with plenty in hand continued in the second race as Ben Buie for trainer Martin Keighley made all and jumped well to secure the success in the second race of the day. Sam Twiston-Davies had a perfectly timed ride as second placed Templier rallied after following the last jump. Templier was held up for the majority of the race before making progress up the field to challenge Line Of Descent who was tiring. Eventually Ben Buie won by over two-and-a-half-lengths
with nothing closing in on him.
It was a much closer contest in the following race, the Coxford Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race as short favourite Brandisova and Doireann battled to the line where the former won by a short head. From the start it was a close battle between the eventual winner and second both having to rally in the closing stages. Third place went to Brianna Rose who

was midfield and made nice headway before weakened on the run in.
Market favourite Sergeant Wilson stormed home in the feature race of the day making all and winning in an impressive style by six-anda-half lengths and easy win for the Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies team. Second was the weakening Enthused and third was Jaramillo. There were significant distances between the rest of the field.
It was a big day for the five-pound claimer Lewis Stones as he secured the double in the penultimate race, the Fakenham Racecourse Supports Racing To School Novices’ Handicap Chase.
Stone’s gave Cloudy Wednesday a peach of a ride for trainer Caroline Fryer as he found steady pathway for the seven-year-old gelding after he stumbled over the seventh fence. He eventually got back in touch with the
leading Bolsover Bill who was closely followed by Auditoria and Camulus the second and third respectively. Cloudy Wednesday ran well on the run-in which secured the win as despite Auditoria and Camulus chasing and rallying they didn’t have enough to match the winner.
The favourite secured the final and another fine day of racing was completed with a winner for David Pipe and Tom Scudamore by five-anda-half lengths as he made all, despite being challenged after two-furlongsout he went clear after a great jump.
Bashers Reflection made headway at the same time as the winner Pachacuti but had to be ridden to challenge by Jack Quinlan. He had no extra and struggled to jump straight and weakened quickly Third was a massive nineteen lengths behind second and just couldn’t match the leading duo at all.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LOSSIEMOUTH looks one of the best seen in this division for several years and would be unbeaten had she got better luck behind Gala Marceau at Leopardstown. She can improve further and make it 2-1 against her stablemate who is also capable of better and won’t go down easily now fitted a hood. Blood Destiny needs to cut out the mistakes but is another very exciting juvenile and can make it another 1-2-3 this week for Willie Mullins.

The Directors of Fakenham Racecourse Limited would like to thank
for their very generous sponsorship at today’s race meeting.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

PLAY SMARTER
Willie Mullins has compiled a fine record in this race in recent years, and as one of a 4-pronged attack, the highly-admirable SHARJAH could provide the Closutton handler with further success. Twice a runner-up in the Champion Hurdle, he’s run well all 3 starts in Graded company so far this term and this sort of mark may well be within reach. Low-mileage stablemate Hunters Yarn is a major threat however along with Betfair Hurdle second Filey Bay Pembroke and Pied Piper complete the shortlist

PLAY SMARTER
Very open by Grade 1 standards but there’s an air of star quality surrounding CORBETTS CROSS, who has been acquired by J.P.McManus having taken another step forward when scoring on debut for Emmet Mullins at Naas last month. There will be no hiding place regarding stamina here and, with that in mind, Three Card Brag is a massive threat, while those looking for one at longer odds, we certainly haven’t seen the best of Stay Away Fay

PLAY SMARTER
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS would be unbeaten over fences but for falling at last year’s Festival. The way he forged clear in the Irish Gold Cup suggests the slightly longer trip this afternoon should be within range and he’s very much the one to beat Bravemansgame is another who has suffered only one defeat over fences and is feared most after his impressive King George success. Last year’s National Hunt Chase winner Stattler will relish the return to a longer trip and looks best of the rest.

A competitive heat, but Paul Nicholls’ juvenile RARE MIDDLETON has created a very good impression in 2 starts over hurdles so far and an opening mark of 119 shouldn’t prove beyond him, so he’s fancied to get the better of Takeit Easy, who has slipped in the weights and should be suited by the track. Willie Mullins took this in 2021 with Galopin des Champs and SPANISH HARLEM is fancied to tread a similar path and make a winning handicap debut under Michael O’Sullivan who has hit the headlines already here this week. Iroko, who continues to go from strength to strength, looks sure make a bold bid for the hat-trick so he heads up the dangers, while Imagine and Cool Survivor look the pick of Gordon Elliott’s sextet in an ultra-competitive final race of the Festival.
