WELCOME

All of us at Fakenham are delighted to welcome you to today’s Weatherbys, the third race meeting of the season. We are especially grateful to Weatherbys for their generous sponsorship of today’s race meeting.

A lot of building work has been going on at Fakenham over the summer and as you can see the New Long Bar is not yet finished. Please bear with the temporary marquee bar for the next couple of race meetings. We hope to have the new bar up and running for the December race meeting. We have also upgraded the jockeys’ changing rooms, weighing room and increased the size of the Owners’ and Trainers’ Cool Roxy Bar. For those of you with eagle eyes you will note that all the chase fences and hurdles have been changed from orange tops and bottoms to white and the hurdles are now made of foam pads and not birch. These are very positive changes that should benefit the welfare of the horses.

We have recently started Fakenham Race Club which has two horses in training one of which is racing today There is still availability for membership. So far this season, of the three races the horses have competed in, they have achieved first, third and fourth. To find out more about this exciting and fun initiative please look at the advertisement in this race card or go and see Dawn who has an information stand in the foyer of The Prince of Wales Stand.

Best Wishes, David Hunter Chief Executive

Official BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A competitive three-runner contest opened the meeting with the oddson favourite Getthepot gaining the most market support from the Fergal O’Brien stable. However, it was the Philip Hobbs-trained Dan’s Chosen that was the main attraction in the race who won by a whopping 78 lengths over Who Is That in second. The favourite, who was soundly beaten anyway, refused the last and could be worth another shot next time out.

Our second race was a hot maiden hurdle which saw Milldam attract a fair share of the market. He was sent off as a strong favourite of the nine runner field and put up a bold bid to finish second but proved no match for Kaleb who came home readily. Given a beautiful ride by Jack Quinlan for Amy Murphy, his mount run out a decisive winner on his second start over hurdles, having shaped nicely on debut in France. He was born to be a chaser

in time so could be one to follow for the future too.

Jack Quinlan completed a quickfire double as La Breille narrowly held on to victory in the Anmer Fillies’ Juvenile Hurdle. Teaming up with Richard Bandey, Jack always had his mount prominent from the get-go and went two lengths clear two from home. He was all out to the line to fend off Sean Quinlan’s

late surge on Lechro in what proved to be a very slow motion finish.

Our feature race on the card was the Sandringham Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Chase, a challenger for the mares chase series qualifier. Four mares headed down to post for this trappy contest which saw the Jedd O’Keeffe-trained Fairfield Ferrata land the spoils, ridden by Conor O’Farrell. She made her second start over fences a successful one, beating Dan Skelton’s inmate Daddling Glory who finished two and a half lengths behind the impressive winner. The strong fancied My Silver Lining never made an impression after being held up throughout and was a shade disappointing.

Six runners headed to post for the penultimate race on the day, the Greene King IPA Mares’ Handicap Hurdle over two miles and four

furlongs. Tom Bellamy made full use of the handicapper’s leniency on Sawpit Sienna who justified favouritism off a mark of 80 for the Samuel Drinkwater stable. She recorded win number two under Rules over the course and distance, keeping on well for pressure to fend off Jack Quinlan who was bidding for his hat-trick on Cluain Aodha.

To conclude another fantastic day here at Fakenham, the highly talented Flat performer Al Zaraqaan completed his hat-trick over hurdles in fine style. He went pillar to post and hurdled with fluency throughout to score by one and a half lengths. Saligo Bay was the one the punters fancied the most, but Jamie Moore gave his all and could only book himself for second place. The pair pulled nicely clear of the third placed Coastguard Station to round off the action.

THE WEATHERBYS NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK HANDICAP CHASE & THE WEATHERBYS HAMILTON NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE

The two Weatherbys-sponsored races on today’s card both look like competitive heats.

The Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase is headed by last year’s winner Sabbathical, who returns to Fakenham today for the first time since that 21-length victory He was returned to hurdles by Evan Williams following that win and reappeared over the larger obstacles for the first time in months at Sandown in March earlier this year He jumped poorly on that occasion, but a return to this track could see him revitalised off a 2lb lower mark than when he won this last year.

Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero have their yard in fine form at present and send out Gouet Des Bruyeres, a summer jumper who reunites with regular jockey Toby Wynne The return of Wynne to the saddle should see a return to form, with the manner of his three and a half-length victory at Southwell (over the reopposing Uncle O) more than good enough to be in the mix in this contest.

Master Malcolm recorded back-to-back victories at Fontwell the last twice and ground conditions should suit him perfectly. He has a hike in the weights to contend with but can go well again. A return to form by either Follow Your Fire or Templier (making his first start for Sarah Humphrey) can put those two in the mix, with Moore Clouds also worth a second look as a Point-to-Point winner making her debut over fences under rules.

The Weatherbys Hamilton Novices’ Handicap Chase sees six go to post. Ben Case saddled The Golden Rebel to be runner-up last year and sends out Conceroe under Jack Quinlan. His maiden hurdle win came here at Fakenham so a return to the track looks a big plus if he can take a step forward from his recent chase debut over three miles here.

Top weight Maria Magdalena sports cheekpieces for the first time and the equipment could help her take a big step forward from her chase debut at Hereford. She didn’t run badly on that first attempt over the larger obstacles and is admirably consistent. Voice Of Hope is fit from the flat and on his Irish form (when trained by Andy Slattery) he brings potential to this chase debut.

Prime Pretender made an incredibly promising start to life over fenc es last time at Ffos Las. A Point-to-Point winner in 2020, he was held up and made eye-catching late ground in tough conditions and a step up in trip should prove no trouble at all. He shaped like a chaser over hurdles so it was little surprise to see him run his best race for Evan Williams on his first go over fences and he has a lot going for him in a race where plenty bring potental to the table

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
