WELCOME & OFFICIALS

WELCOME

All of us at Fakenham are delighted to welcome you to today’s Greene King Race Day, the second race meeting of the season. We are especially grateful to Greene King for their generous sponsorship of today’s race meeting.

A lot of building work has been going on at Fakenham over the summer and as you can see the New Long Bar is not yet finished. Please bear with the temporary marquee bar for the next couple of race meetings. We hope to have the new bar up and running for the December race meeting. We have also upgraded the jockeys’ changing rooms, weighing room and increased the size of the Owners’ and Trainers’ Cool Roxy Bar For those of you with eagle eyes you will note that all the chase fences and hurdles have been changed from orange tops and bottoms to white and the hurdles are now made of foam pads and not birch. These are very positive changes that should benefit the welfare of the horses.

We have recently started Fakenham Race Club which has two horses in training both of which are running today There is still availability for membership. To find out more about this exciting and fun initiative please look at the advertisement in this race card or go and see Dawn who has an information stand in the foyer of The Prince of Wales Stand.

Best Wishes, David Hunter Chief Executive

Official BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

TIME AT

Friday 14th October

Fakenham

The Paddy Power Start of Season Raceday welcomed back the crowds to Fakenham and saw plenty of exciting racing to kickstart our season.

The opening race for our last fixture was the Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle. Six horses went to post on the good ground and went a nice gallop over the two and a half miles. 8/11 favorite, Sophosc, was prominent throughout and set the pace for his rivals, with Rhebus Road on his heels and Cawthorne Lad disputing the lead with him. Sophosc picked up two from home and when jockey Charlie Todd gave him the squeeze, the gelding knew his job and followed up from his two previous wins to win easily for trainer Ian Williams.

The second race saw an exciting finish with just a neck in it. The Dr Richard Newland trained Shetland Bus was midfield until two fences from home when he was challenged and given a strong ride from claiming jockey, Luke Scott, to get him up on the line just in front of the Skelton horse Spirit Of The Games.

The 2-mile Novice’s Hurdle race was won by Matata who was never challenged and won easily despite his 250 day break. His last run in an Irish Point suggested he might be a feisty one at the races, but jockey Daryl Jacob understood the task and let the 4-year-old gelding run freely. Despite a mistake two out, he came home seven and a half lengths clear of his nearest rival.

DON’T MISS OUR NEXT MEETING TUESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER SEE YOU THERE!

Simon and Christine Prout’s Baby Sham was the early leader of the fourth race but jumped right and lost ground and was tailed off by the penultimate fence. Cobbs Corner and Blended Stealth remained prominent but 5/2 favorite, Blended Stealth, couldn’t find any more heading in to the last whilst Cobbs Corner kept on gamely and crossed the line two lengths a head of Blended Stealth, denying Nigel Twiston-Davies a double on the day.

The fifth race saw another favorite get beat when evens favorite Haliphon made a mistake and pecked on landing three out. He was ridden out but found no extra in the closing stages of the race, making room for Allo Allo to take the lead after the eighth fence. The 16/5 gelding went three lengths clear approaching the last and kept

on strongly under Ciaran Gethings. This was an exciting first win for the Fakenham Race Club on home turf after the gelding made the switch from the Point to Point field to the Rules field.

The final race of the day saw Tim Vaughan’s 100/30 Bobmahley jump off handy and run prominently behind the favorite Oceans Red. Bobmahley looked like second place was a sure thing when he was hampered at the 11th fence but went second again two out until Oceans Red, who was three lengths up three out, made a mistake at the last and despite jockey Toby Wynne’s best efforts, the gelding found no extra and was headed in the closing stages of the race by Bobmahley who kept on well under Alan Johns.
